Exactly. I couldn’t agree more. And I think it’s because those two played the character and connected to her more. The character is based on a dark skinned, Black southern American woman who is told throughout her life that she isn’t beautiful. Fantasia’s voice showcases the soul and struggle that’s very authentic and touching, while Cynthia’s version is stirring and soars with crisp technique and emotional texture.

@@mdgamble I feel the same way. She's having trouble manipulating her break. She sings the highs well and the lows well. It's just the going between them that could have been better manipulated in a lower key with clearer distinctions on when to use chest and head voice. Still a great performance, but just because she squawls doesn't mean there aren't problems.

There is a difference in being in character singing a song and performing a vocal rendition of the same song. Each songstress did a beautiful job in their own context and circumstances. JHud's performance was orchestrated, Tasia's performance was while in character during the production, the remainder of the ladies were freestyling their own musical interpretations/ renditions. These should not be compared, only appreciated.

They both had tons of confidence. But Fantasia sings with the conviction of a Rosa Parks demanding-a-decent-spot-on-the-bus conviction. You feel me? Fantasia sings in protest! That type of conviction that says: you’re not going to deny me this opportunity; I dare you. So conveying THAT through song is a gift.

For sure! Everyone else sings it ok to great but the focus is only on singing it well and doing extra notes-Fantasia is going to naturally sing the mess out of it. Tasia’s gritty voice with range is going to give her even more edge but she becomes the song and not just singing it!

This belongs to Fantasia all day and night. I saw her back in 2007 at Kennedy Center in Wash DC. It was just amazing. Everyone else steps back it's all her's. Saw Lachanze in the NY original version and she is my second choice. The others to me are just singing a song. Fantasia embodies the character and feel of the hardness of Celie's life.

Anointed? Gifted and anointed are 2 different things. Anointing brings healing and restoration through the presence of God. Gifting is talent to complete a task well. Gifting is given by God but, anointing invokes God's presence.
Tasia was able to capture the true essence of the song. Being a Southerner and the role being that of a southern woman gives her an edge. She sang just how we would have expected to hear the song.

I love the version from the Kennedy Center Honors with Jennifer Hudson. When the choir comes in, I get goosebumps. But when Fantasia sang it, I cried. There is no theater in her performance. She, I hope, knows she doesn't have to add more bravado to the big parts because they are beautiful when they are beautifully sung from the heart. I am looking forward to the movie and soundtrack having a strong recording of Fantasia's performance.

Jennifer Hudson was excellent. However, I have to go with Fantasia on this as she was in character. I could feel the power of her words as she sang. I feel there’s nothing more moving than an artist singing while in character. That’s what makes musicals so great. It was Ms Ceily’s breakthrough moment in the play. I saw a clip of Fantasia singing this same song at some event , while she was really good it didn’t have the same affect on me. All of the singers were good.

Fantasia for me! Hands down. She embodied each lyric to it's fullest and made you feel the story. There is no questions that Cynthia Erivo delivered an amazing flawless "technical" rendition. Performing is more than just hitting every note and intonation, it's about emoting and bringing the lyric and story to life. Fantasia did just that! All are talented and my point is proven with LaChanze winning the Tony for her performance. They all bring something special.
That’s not fair to imply that Cynthia only was good on a technical level. She delivered the emotional goods too.

Cynthia is technical and clean, might be too clean that it lacks soul and the grittiness of the context of the song. All of them were phenomenal, filled with angst, power and soul. Fantasia's version is all of that, but also transcendent in a way that can only happen when the spirit of a song's lyrics were created for YOU to sing it because you've lived it. That song flows from the depths of her soul.
Morrisette Amon sings beautifully, but Fantasia sings from her entire soul! And makes you feel whatever song she sings. I have to go with Fantasia!
Cynthia easily knocks it out the park for me but Fantasia is amazing too.

Musical Theatre is hard. We have to look at vocals but also look at acting as well. Obviously Cynthia has the pipes and her voice is gold. But Fantasia brings something so vital to the role; other than her voice. This song is supposed to be raw, raspy and just a woman's lament to life. I've been Fantasia and Cynthia and both are amazing. But I am def gonna go with Fantasia.

Remember Fantasia had vocal cord tumors that would become inflamed when she hits that note during this time as well. She was in pain every night during her performances. So it's Fantasia for me but always! ❤️ 💙

This isn't Cynthia's final form. When she is singing it in the play it is something else! It's amazing. I think the reason why Cynthias and Fantasia have so much emotion is because they are singing it on stage in character in the middle of an intense scene.
