you don't say "like"

- From "The Graham Norton Show" - Season 11 - Episode 11
Willi.i.am has been talking about his work as a dj. So far Miriam Margolyes has misunderstood his words several times so, in this part of the episode, Will.i.am tries speaking correctly and clearly. He is answering a question about his remix of Dirty Dancing's song.
I do not own any copyrights on this but, as an English teacher, I thought it useful to start a conversation about the use of "like".
omg her accent change at 1:20 tripped me out
she suddenly sounded like an old black american lady

@@ezzalrobin8165 Exactly. NO.
No you're stupid
Remember when you were 13 and you’d use “like” one time during a sentence, and some crusty as grown up would interrupt you to go “ Like omg like wow like like like” just to ridicule you :/
oh god i was 13 and had to talk to a police officer as a witness to something and said "like" about every 5 words. i didn't realise how much i used it until he repeated it back to me.
That’s the least serious form of ridicule I’ve ever heard of.
Maybe you should learn from some old "crusty" person who can at least probably speak English properly?
@@bobmarshall3700 "who can at least probably speak"
That's a horrible pile-up. It's not grammatically incorrect, but it is stylistically awful.
Using the word like is fine until you hear Jake Paul use it
Cracks me up everytime When she says Chums?... Chums!
lol she's real old school.
when he said "intertwine" that got me
“Don’t use the word like. I don’t like it.” 😂
prescriptivism at it’s finest.
“like” = paraphrasing, not exact quoting, unlike using “said”.
clara its finest*
Miriam made me aware that I'm using that word too often in that context. :p
Me too, I'm like always using it.
Add literally, legit, and woke
I've heard a lot of "proper" English speakers, especially British ones, use the phrase "he said something to the effect of". Now, that I would call impractical compared to "he was like".
grmpf LMAO who says that
What British speak like that looooooool
@@ceciliahc3013 Evidently, you don't.

OMG, like, who like, wants to like, take the time, like to, like develop an actual, like vocabulary? Like, whatever.
Oh god. Imagine if she was on this couch with justin bieber. He would drive her up the wall with his incoherent speech, because I've never seen anyone use the word 'like' as much as him.

Every dumb person in existence:
Kia Kaha a lot of smart people use the world like, not just your stereotypical valley girls. i think the word like is way too demonised because everything mostly young girls do/say the media finds somewhat dumb
This is one of the funniest interviews ever , these two are the new two Ronnies 👌🏻👏🏻
Miriam is simply the best. Always laugh so much when she's a guest. Two weeks' ago episode, with her and Daniel Radcliffe, had me crying from laughing so much
@Vindicated Weltanschauung Well, to each their own. My sense of humour isn't dependent of other people's. Sorry you don't find that funny, but that won't male it unfunny to me.

I love how Will keeps explaining everything to Miriam ❤️
My gran hates when i use Like in a sentence. But shes from england and im from belfast, know watta mean like

I just love these two together and this clip so much... Incredibly funny and sweet🤗❤
He is so cute and funny, witty too.
'They said "XYZ"' implies that you're quoting a statement verbatim from a person
'They were like, "XYZ"' implies that this isn't a direct quote, but rather a statement as to the effect of what they said
I absolutely love her !!!!!!! She is hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Where did this guy go I didn't heard of him in a long time
Apologize for poor English

I cannot listen to a couple of my relatives for long because of "like." It's in almost every sentence, sometimes three in a sentence.
Lol
I'm from Scotland and we say like after everything we say! Well in fife we do I'm sure in Glasgow they say but after everything doesn't make sense to me but there prob thinking the same thing about us fifers
It indicates stupidity. Doesn't say much for Fife.
In Glasgow you're lucky if you can understand half their sentence if they have a strong accent
Lee Emberson shut up lee
Can you believe that words change meanings? Unbelievable to some, even awful to others... but not awful as in inspiring awe, awful as in terrible, because that word never changed meanings... no words EVER change meanings, the GODS gave us WORDS with specific meanings, right?

Shaggy doesn't approve this element
Excellent ! street slang-man gets a lesson in grammar
Kurt Hubbard-Beale grow up and get a life. If you were truly a linguist, you would appreciate the use of the word like. It’s deeply important to conversation, it’s a discourse marker. I just don’t see how it affects you.
@@asherjackson4504 There are plenty of things that don't affect us here, like poverty in Africa. Doesn't mean I have to appreciate other people's incoherent babbling. And I don't but I rarely talk to idiots either.
This too irks me
You did not search for this
I agree with Miriam. I can't stand people who say 'like' all the time. It seems to be a Gen Y thing, and a really bad habit, but I suspect it's not going to go away. Between that and 'literally', 'actually' and many others, it's an irritating time for grammar Nazis like me.
Will.i.Am is old enough to know better. He's certainly not part of Gen Y!
"Technically"
I do prefer like as it speaks to a state of being rather than a verbal expression - it exactly fits that kind of non verbal humor - it's definitely generational but language is always in flux and servant to the speakers so it isn't necessarily incorrect
And people need to stop using the word awesome! I’m getting sick of that word being used all the time!
@@JohnSmith-lt7jw I hate the word "epic". Especially when someone is telling an epic story, but when they get to the end, it was really shit.
Ok boomer
It annoys me that old people do this because we will continue to adapt and change the language we use as time goes on. Just like we used to say "Good morrow!" "Toodle-pip!" and "How art thou?" decades ago. We don't say those things anymore.
The way we speak in a hundred years will most likely change and will be slightly different to today. There'll be different slang and other commonplace phrases that the new generations use and this will continue until the human language doesn't exist.
@s t a r I get that it's annoying when people use it again and again (my younger sister used to do this, it nearly drove me mad), but the way Will is using it is a legitimate way to use it. It's just that older people were taught to say that certain sentence a different way. This means that to them, the way we use 'like' in a sentence like Will did sounds wrong, but it's not at all and is actually grammatically correct.
Yeah we used to say "how art thou" decades ago. At least two.
@@InsideOutAnus I would have said centuries but that wouldn't have been quite right.
It wouldn't be wrong either but Ya know
@@ThatHawksSimp Centuries would have actually been far more correct.
@@InsideOutAnus well not entirely, because I'm talking about when they stopped being used. Not when they were first used.
Most educated people dislike the constant use of "like." Know what I mean? HahHaha.
I certainly do Barbara.
Barbara T no, snobs dislike it. Properly educated people have no time for chastising others on their speech, and they understand that language is adaptable.

Please stop using the word like I don’t LIKE it
What that woman did was horrible. It was bad enough she corrected another adult’s grammar in front of others, but in front an audience, on tv a television show that millions of people will see? That was so incredibly rude. I don’t care how old she is, the “respect your elders” rule doesn’t apply when the elder is as rude as that.
How that poor man kept sitting there as this woman jumped on every word out of his mouth, I don’t know. I was horrified just watching it.
It's called a discourse marker. Come back when you're a linguist Miriam 😊
This is like totally the truth ☝️
OOOP!
@s t a r That's another name for it, yeah
It's usually seen that way by older people, but it's a feature of the language of younger people. It's ageist and prescriptivist at heart, and while it may seem annoying, calling it out is in the same vein as hassling someone over "me and my friends" vs "my friends and I". It's a valid language feature, and correcting someone on their speech is pretty rude (and a bit classist to honestly).
(Don't come for me, I'm a linguist)
Dude gay??
What a boring story.
