People need to stop believing this misconception that it has to do with cost of living. This is just an excuse. Look at Israel. It's a developed country yet the only one country somehow maintaining a birth rate above the replacement level despite facing all the same issues of a first world country. This has nothing to do with costs. It's just culture and the mindset people in the country have

The reason why myself who is 26 and childfree in a country where the average woman has her first child at age of 19 and women suffer from depression after hitting 24 and still single is simply because I don't see any benefits and I don't want that much responsability, mind you I can 20× more than the minimum wage and I own a sucessful business while also working at an oil and gas company.

This will not tackle the systemic reasons as to why South Koreans are not having children. The employee class has to engage in fierce competition for well paying jobs, if they do not get them society judges them harshly. I am providing an extremely simplified version, but cut long story short the South Korean economic system leads to working people being depressed which takes away their desire to have children. Furthermore the fact that you have widespread price gouging by landlords in the rental sector does not help either.

Human offsprings are raised in groups, communities after toddler age but not just by mother or mother -father.
We are mammals for a reason.
There is no use of child after school sitting idle at home, he/she rather be sent community groups created by neighbourhood ( under provision of govt and schools) with other kids to learn basic cooking, cleaning, self defense, vocational skill, volunteering to communities so that after 10, they can manage their basic things by them at home.
They can even accompany old aged decent people in communities to make their loneliness go away a little.
A kid even after 13 has become complete liability to society as his parents has to do every small things for him like even cleaning his room.
Make kids trained and disciplined at early stage so that they could contribute something to society at their level.

I’ve lived in the Far East and dated Korean women. The core issue isn’t cost of living or working culture. The core issue is that most women, when given complete freedom to choose, reject most men, a problem which is then greatly exacerbated by women choosing a ‘career’ then expecting the man to be a higher earner than her. This is the consistent factor from the Far East to Europe to America to the Christian half of Nigeria and even countries you might not expect such as Vietnam and Jamaica. Modernity is simply not sustainable.

South Korea keeps doing an awesome job at saving our Mother Earth from overpopulation with its extremely low birth rate. I feel pessimistic about them wanting to increase the birth rate because with more people born, there’s a greater carbon footprint because more people are populating the planet and that results in devastating consequences for Mother Earth because of loss in biodiversity, increase in natural disasters and the drastic warming of the planet. South Korea should keep doing its amazing job at saving Mother Earth with its extremely low birth rate by reducing its birth rate even more.

Didn't I read that there was an increase in birth rate etc in 2024 for south Korea?? So despite all the other comments, it looks like something is working. Still very low but it's a positive trend at least.
    Total fertility rate
The total fertility rate, which is the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime, is projected to increase to 0.74 in 2024. This is an increase from the 2023 rate of 0.72, which was a record low.
    Number of births
The number of births has increased for two consecutive months. In August, there were 20,098 births, which was a 5.9% increase from the same month in 2022. In the third quarter, the number of births increased by 8% compared to the same period in 2023.
    Marriage rates
Marriage rates have increased for five consecutive months. In July, the number of couples getting married increased by 32.9% compared to the same month in 2023.

South Korea is statistically one of the countries with the smallest gender wage gap among people “in their 20s”. This is largely attributed to equal access to education and relatively low levels of discrimination against women. However, everything changes once women get married.
From their 30s, the gender wage gap becomes the largest among OECD countries, which is the typical age of marriage for women. If men earned significantly higher wages than women, enough to fully support a family, this might not pose an issue. But it’s also difficult for men to earn at such levels. So both genders have certain problems and concerns, affecting and intensifying the gender conflicts.
After childbirth, women often need to take parental leave or even quit their jobs altogether. (If men also take parental leave, both could face career disruptions.) Recently, some companies have introduced benefits such as wage increases or substantial bonuses for employees who have children, or they encourage men to take parental leave. However, the problem lies in the fact that such companies are still rare.
Interviews with South Koreans reveal additional reasons behind this trend:
    1. They do not want to subject their children to the highly competitive and toxic educational environment.
    2. The current economic environment makes it difficult to provide good opportunities or resources for their children.
    3. Women fear career disruptions, and even if their careers are interrupted, it’s challenging to find a partner who can fully support the family.
If a society could be created where such worries are nonexistent or at least minimized for those in relationship, the issue of the declining birth rate could be sufficiently addressed. But the SK politicians are misusing the budget for unrelated purposes.

just smoke and mirrors. when the pension system starts to stretch people will have kids on their own volition. south korea is still living in a disney fairytale version of marriage and family. Reminds me of a tweet : "their entire worldview is centred on recreating a world that existed only in vacuum cleaner ads from 1958". the quote was related to politics, but applies here as well.
