Great video my friend. My father was with the royal artillery up at the northern end of the bulge. He travelled down through it and into Germany. He died New Year’s Day 2013.
The last survivor of Malmedy died a few years back in Beaver, Pennsylvania. He was my son in laws great uncle. The man was interviewed multiple times and had his faculties up until his death. An absolute HERO so close to my home and family as well. When he was rescued and brought back to a base camp he was told there were SS soldiers in this ambulance, he yanked the doors open and opened fire on them killing them all. He was rage revenge hate filled battle hardened.
The town of La Roche is another great place to visit, it has a small ww2 museum there which has some fantastic items on display, & there are two Sherman tanks in the town too.
So glad you highlighted the 11 killed as a place to visit. I have read so much about the "Battle of the Bulge" for years but only found out about this incident in the last few weeks.
Enjoy all your videos Joe! I did the Peiper tour with Bob in February 2020 before the world shut down. It was an awesome tour, highly recommend any of Bob’s tours.
Thanx.
Great book! Bought it when I was in Bastogne in 2018. It helped me find a relatives spot in Hemroulle and the field the Germans did their Christmas Day attack through with 18 tanks.
I’ve always had this daydream/fantasy of visiting these battlefield locations of the European war theater. I had an uncle a paratrooper O.G. Who fought in WWII and was injured during the BOTB. He was machine gunned in the back. Reported dead to my grandmother multiple times and yet survived the whole war. He shocked everyone when he came home and had to convince his siblings that he didn’t die and even my grandmother was in absolute shock.
Great job, Joe. I was in Bastogne in June, but we didn't get to spend much time exploring. This helped me add a couple of places for the next trip. The next trip will center around Hosingen, where my step dad was captured, and at the NAC&M, to meet a guy who takes care of the grave of a local Mississippi boy.
you must seen the sherman Rhonson, middle of Bastonge plaza,? one shot of a panzerfaust, ,5 crew dead and tank in flames, very dangerous piece of army equipment
My wife and I were hoping to visit some areas in Europe for our anniversary in 2020 but Covid prevented that. What a great resource for our trip when we make it across the pond! Your videos are wonderful
The 3-digit call sign is one of the systems used by the Germans ito identify their vehicles where the first number is the company, the second number is the platoon and the third number is the order of the tank in the section. A section usually only consists out of 4 tanks so the same numbers will always be recurring. Just a short explanation, for the whole story see the internet.
Nice video! It is a pity that Poteau (Belgium) is not listed a few years ago there was a war museum there, but I think it is gone. The most famous photos of the Battle of the Ardennes have been taken on the spot behind the museum. 1st and 9th SS against the 7th US Panzer Division.
You guys are currently researching my cousin, Robert E Pasley 517th pct. I'm very excited will possibly travel to Europe after the research. Joey you do wonderful work. Thank you
I'm planning to visit all five of these places with a group I am bringing next June. We will be concentrating though, on Hosingen, where my half-siblings' dad was captured on 17/12/44.
As a Historian when I look at the things made for war I think of the hands that build them 70 or 80 years ago. Either a Tank or Dragon Teeth......those people are no longer alive but their work is.
@Clif Diggz hi cliff no still haven't been because of covid I tried 3 times but was cancelled each time iam going to try again in 2021 and I will keep trying next year until I get there .
I would recommend, if you don't live in the area, to take your time and visit the town of Bastogne and the museums there. The "barracks" are something you will want to see as well.
Can I have Bobs contact info. Have been to the Ardennes, but not to those sites. Now I MUST go back!! Great, informative video, thanks for your efforts in making this!!
Thank you for your work. Can you tell me if you, or the book you mentioned, have any information about the US 75th Army? My grandfather, R.G.McQueary was a member of the 75th at the bulge. Thank you.
Pieper got away with it at war crimes trial but karma caught up with him years later. I should point out that in another book, U.S. soldiers had a firefight in Germany and the SS finally gave up. Americans took the Germans to a courtyard and executed all of them in revenge for Malmady (this was recounted in Studs Terkel’s book “The Good War”. Don Burgett’s memoirs on the 101 in the war talked about how good those black artillery guys (“Seven Roads to Hell”).
Compared to what was happening in the East with the Red Army, the BOTB was a minor skirmish / breakout op that was never going to succeed. It was Russia that did most of the work, by far, of defeating Hitler in WW2 and the battles on the Eastern Front were far larger scale and far more dramatic and decisive for the war. Western WW2 buffs are mostly intent on glorifying the US/UK Canada side of the conflict and the vast bulk of the 2nd World War is utterly ignored by far too many so called 'students' of the war. Many of the huge battles in the East have been totally neglected in comparison to the endless adulation of the US Army in WW2 [the good war] who actually in terms of casualties only suffered minor losses compared to Russia and even Germany.
The first tank I see is King Tiger nr 213 which is standing outside a museum (free to inspect) in La Gleize. If you want a Panther, there is one in Houffalize, also free to visit.
You might not see this but could you help me out with my grandads unit. Like point me in the right direction where I can read combat reports from the time. Story about 11 killed African American Soldiers is pretty shameful for US and US Army, at the end, monument to those 11 men was erected by son of farmer who tried to save them in first place, not by US.

Agree. Amazing story. Cycled past it by accident and read about it. This is truly a grim and haunting story.

My great grandfather was awarded a bronze star for his campaign in the Ardennes. Miss him!
On the Tiger tank 213 there is a short clip of a black white movie from the war time but the tank highlighted carries number 313 and not 213.

I am going in August, this is such great help. Thank you, thank you, thank you !
Sorry I missed these places when I was stationed in Germany.
When I was in Bastogne in 1965....there was an M4 Sherman on a pedestal......with a hole in the left side.....
Les Griffiths
Fantastic video Joe, I'll visit those places in the coming future.
Vool vid. Totally doing this in two weeks. Thanks!
Great job with this video! Terrific!
Thank you! Cheers!
Are you going to Bastogne this year? I met you in a McDonald's this year on D Day! Cool Video
