Saw it in 1994 on tv in my friends trailer. Blew my mind back then and still today. Saw Beck live twice, one show in British Columbia I could write a book on it. Crazy original artist
The Beck deep dive will shock you with quality and diversity. I put him up there with Bowie and Prince but his sense of humor can throw people off his genius.
I am 74 white mom. I put this on a loop in my car everywhere I go, grocery store etc. just to make me laugh and get in a good mood. You never know what we old people are thinking.!!
You can't begin to understand how bizarre, unique, and revolutionary Beck's sound was in the context in which it first appeared. The fact that it landed in heavy rotation on MTV was a small miracle, but someone there made the right choice. He's created a lot of amazing music over the past 30 years. Highly recommend "Beck - Devils Haircut (Live on 2 Meter Sessions)" which is another great (and funky) song but with an absolutely insane ending (in this version).
I have read that Beck stated that lyrics don't have to make sense to have a hit and that this was written to prove it. This guy has the oddest sounds and sound combinations in his compositions and he is a master at making the mash ups highly musical and interesting. You really can't pigeonhole Beck into any genre. It seems like he learned music in isolation.
Gotta respect that Beck did lo fi hip hop HIS way, with sly humor, not trying to bite anyone else's style but still sounding musically interesting. He understands how versatile genre sounds can be for the talented and capable.
Beck mostly considers himself a folk artist and a lot of his later music reflects this. Some music critics have described "Loser" as "stoner rap." "Loser" was Beck's second single, released in 1993 when he was 23 years old. Beck recorded the song in just a few hours at music producer Carl Stephenson's home, although Beck says he'd been working on the song since the 1980s. Beck says the lyrics of the song were mostly improvised, although some of the lyrics reflect stories from folk music history - the guy who hung himself with a guitar string, etc. But most of the lyrics are vaguely about Beck's experience being homeless in Los Angeles, working minimum wage jobs, before he became known in the music industry. Beck says the chorus lyrics, sung in Spanish and English ("soy un perdedor" - "I'm a loser"), happened after he listened to the first recorded take of his verse raps. He felt like he was a horrible rapper, he was "just a loser," so that became the chorus. Even though the single was released in 1993, "Loser" wasn't added to Beck's first 2 albums. It was added to his third album, Mellow Gold, in 1994. Mellow Gold was Beck's first major label release. I think Beck wanted to include a piece of his past on the album, so that's why he added "Loser." At the start of the video, Beck's wearing a Star Wars stormtrooper mask, but it's often blurred out for copyright reasons, since Beck didn't have permission to use it in the video.
I would also say “Hot Wax.” That’s probably my favorite of his. They’re all on his album “Odelay.” I think he won a Grammy for that one. It’s an excellent album.
Beck is very unique and greatly talented. His catalog is worth exploring. A few years ago he gathered more than a hundred musicians playing an outrageous variety of instruments to accompany him in a cover of David Bowie’s song Sound and Vision. You should react to the video, it’s like nothing else.
"if you like this " "The Distance" is a song by American alternative rock band Cake. "The Distance" is a song by American alternative rock band Cake. "The Distance" is a song by American alternative rock band Cake. " you know"
My wife loves his Odelay album. We have a bunch of his CDs. We saw him with the NSO at Wolftrap farm park this past summer. Great show! He is very eclectic with everything from rap to funk to roots music.
Your comment reminded me of my English teacher at school 50 odd years ago , we were doing poetry and covering alliteration , i said so its getting the rhyme wrong , the teacher just shook his head and muttered the words " you heathen " to which i replied " of course i'm English " another Thursday after school detention was handed out . Funny what triggers memories .
@@brandonboucher7090 maybe , haha , i can recall memories which is a bonus but in the same breath it reminds me i'm mortal . I checked out a couple of your videos , nice work , are you west coast ?
The guitar is a sample of some guy named...Duane Allman. Beck was asked once what his next record would be, "What I want to listen but can't find on the radio." As such, his albums vary widely, folk rock, hip hop, pop rock, Prince. You may know part or all of his song, "Where It's At." "Where it's at./I've got two turntables and a microphone."
Wow, I just noticed that and posted about it. That's awesome info, thanks! The song is Midnight Rider, recorded by both The Allman Brothers band, and solo by Greg Allman.
The drum sample is literally Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers when he played sessions on Johnny Jenkins album never heard anywhere Duane was sampled for that guitar ? Not saying your wrong but never ever heard this from anybody
My favorite band is Led Zeppelin (for perspective) and Beck is in my Top 5 of all artists! Check out Where It's At, Girl, Devil's Haircut, The New Pollution, Sexx Laws, Mixed Bizness, Hell Yes, Nicotine and Gravy, Lazy Flies, and so many others.
My childhood! The album that followed this album, "Odelay", is pure genius fire from front t back. "Sea Changes" is a chill, folk masterpiece. He's got dance music, and all kinds of other stuff. A true artist.
This is huge, you also want to try “Where it’s at” “Devils Haircut” from the Odelay album, his 2nd huge from 95-96. Loved the whole thing. Then he changed up genres quite a lot and is still at it. Very eclectic guy, but this is his biggest one for sure.
Brilliant reaction fellas. I hadn't thought of "the Beatles" in this song, but that could seriously be a "Paul" base line- And I've heard this song HUNDREDS of times in 30+yrs....
FYI- "Soy un perdedor" is Spanish for "I'm a loser." Some of this might be a bit of urban legend, but Beck apparently recorded this entire album on a 4-track cassette recorder in his home.
Highly recommend "Beercan," and "Fuckin With My Head (Mountain Dew Rock)" for some more wacky and funky Beck, "Sexx Laws," is another great one for that side of him, for a more pop based "traditional," song that is a bit more recent, "Colors," is such an ear worm and the video is simply amazing to watch the choreography in. Those are a handful of must listen to tracks of his, I listen to all those songs a LOT. They usually get better with every listen as well as you appreciate the genius that is this man. I'm just now getting deeply into Beck and I feel like an idiot for ignoring such a truly talented and unique artist for so long.
I can remember exactly where I was when I first heard "Loser". Working a temp job in the packing department of a local cake factory. When the song came on the radio, I just had to MOVE, and ended up dancing around my station. Boy, did I get some funny looks that day... Oh, as for the mask at the start of the video, IIRC it was a Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet. Apparently George Lucas objected, so they had to blur it out, which made the video even more intriguing in the end...
It was a great year for music. I miss those days (almost 30 years ago!) The big shocker for me was the 2002 country/folk album Sea Change. He sounds like mellow, Allman Brothers.
Hey Guys ... Beck is all over the map with his musical stylings... the guy plays something like 11 instruments... total genius musically.... one of the last true artists out there... great choice!!
Beck is still around. He's all over the sonic map. Definitely a fascinating, pretty flawless discography. He doesn't rap all the time. You should definitely hear "Where It's At," "The New Polution," "Devil's Haircut," "Deadweight "Debra," "Lost Cause," "E-Pro," "Cellphone's Dead," "Gamma Ray," "Waking Light," etc. His most recent album was in 2019 and a lot of it was produced by Pharrell. The interesting thing is, Pharrell wanted not to make songs on his hip-hop side. Instead, Pharrell wanted him to lean into his singer-songwriter side. He's done a lot of guesting on other people's albums since the 2019 record. Hopefully we will eventually get another record.
Omg, I have watched all your Zeppelin videos (several times) but Beck and Green Day are my other very favorites - please listen to more Beck...he's a genius.
One of the coolest things about the 90's was all the crossover between genres--rockers with rappers with country and you name it all folded in together. Things seem too compartmentalized these days.
Beck is an amazing, versatile artist. Odelay was a major album. Loads of hooks, samples, beats, melodies. I also love his album Midnite Vultures (Sexx Laws is great fun, and Debra). And then Guerro, also a great album. I like is ballsy, in yer face stuff, and love his introspective, acoustic, melancholic vibe too.

I think you guys would love ´´Beercan´´´and ´´Where is at´´ as well, very cool beats and melodies
My favorite artist since 1993. Beck was influenced by nearly every genre. Lots of diversity between song...even more between albums. If you really want to hear him spit, check out "I'm So Free" from Colors. Great reaction!
Great choice guys! Beck can literally synthesize everything into his music. He's been a prolific musician since his first album. Check out "Two Turntables and Microphone". Totally fire.
I just saw him last summer touring with an orchestra. He's practically a crooner now, but he'll still bust out some funky shit. He's one of a kind, like a funnel that you can just pour anything through.
Glad you found Beck. Try these next - "New Pollution", "Devil's Haircut", "Debra", "E-Pro", "Girl" ... covers many genres. Can't go wrong, enjoy gents!
James Brown was the best solo artist of the 60s, Bowie the best of the 70s, Prince the best of the 80s, and Beck was best solo artist of the 90s and 2000s!
Love Beck and this song! Fusion is a great way to describe his music. Every song is worth a listen off that album. "Where it's At" is a great second listen. Thanks guys!
Devil's Haircut, Where Its At. Lots of stuff on Odelay. And then there's the mellower Beck of Mutations, Sea Change, and Morning Phase. A true musical artist. Got to see him in Athens GA around 1997, I think it was the Odelay tour. He was like James Brown meets Mick Jagger on stage. Moving constantly. Check out more!
Beck's like Bowie. A complete musical chameleon. Hip hop, folk, punk, funk, pop, even tropicalia. He does it all.
I've always said Beck is the David Bowie of my generation. Every record unique and different then the last.
Yes… that’s what it is… he IS like a new Bowie in some ways. Maybe even more reticent than Bowie but there’s something there.
Spot on!
Well said.
Exactly
"I Got Two Turntables & a Micrphone"!! "Where its at" is another Hit from Beck
Love that album.
YESSSSS

Still getting crazy with the cheez-whiz over here how bour you?😂
Bummer he's into Scientology. Dig him otherwise, but.. yeah.. ick. Lol

"Get crazy with the cheez whiz!"
in the era of rap artists shouting out everything in their songs beck shouting out the cheese wiz was legendary.
I'm still quoting this to this day.
I remember when this came out. It was big because it was so unique and genre bending, imo. Still a a fun song today.
when my gf sang this , i took it as a message .....lol
Saw it in 1994 on tv in my friends trailer. Blew my mind back then and still today. Saw Beck live twice, one show in British Columbia I could write a book on it. Crazy original artist
The Beck deep dive will shock you with quality and diversity. I put him up there with Bowie and Prince but his sense of humor can throw people off his genius.
Absolutely! He’s one of the ones I put in the ‘genius’ category. Truly a gifted artist.
The dude can do a split. Just like James Brown.
He is on the record as liking Prince music and was at at least one of the tribute shows.
I am 74 white mom. I put this on a loop in my car everywhere I go, grocery store etc. just to make me laugh and get in a good mood. You never know what we old people are thinking.!!
One of the most innovative and creative artists of our time. He defies classification, which is why he’s so great.

“I thought Beck was something totally different”. Yes, that’s correct.
Well said. I said it worse above. 🙂
It takes a lot of swag to do a song like this. This song was a huge hit in the 1990s.
Another great hit by Beck: Where It's At.
Do it!!!!
Two turntables and a microphone.
Bottles and cans. Just clap your hands.
Guero, Black Tamborine, Hell Yes, Profanity Prayers...
Bummed me out a bit though to hear hes into scientology. 😮
He's a musical genius no doubt, won 8 Grammy's including album of the year from 22 nominations. Beck is Beck, sounds like nobody else.
That look when he recognized the hook and threw his arm in the air!!!? I'M DEAD! 👊🔥😂
And my time is a piece of wax falling on a termite - that's choking on the splinters
bet.
Beck does many styles. Also check out "Where It's At", "The New Pollution", and "Devils Haircut".
Yes to all three of these songs as your next listens! I vote for "Where It's At" next. Odelay is a fantastic album!
Add Hotwax to that por favor🙌
@@benshafer5198 That would be kind of a deep cut but doesn't matter, it's a great song.
Artie from The Larry Sanders Show once described Beck as a "Hillbilly from outerspace." I love that description, and this hook is awesome.
Yes please, more Beck. So many great songs. To me he's genius. every album is different.
(going through and up-voting Beck suggestions)
Love Beck. One of the most eclectic artists of all time.

The song Debra is fantastic. 70's groove with hilarious lyrics.
Funky af! ❤
This comment needs more than just a like. Debra and her sister too, love that song!
Great song!
Beck has such a varied catalog of music and styles that you guys are gonna love it. One of my favorites.
Greatest slacker song ever.
Beck is a musician, period. He makes songs, however they come. Genius.
One of many hits on this album!!! 1993 what memories. “Soy un perdedor” (Spanish) in English is
I'm a loser

" Where its At " next.

His first single...pretty much created it all himself in his bedroom and appeared out of nowhere. He hits every every style in his career...awesome!
Beck is his own animal. Enjoy your journey.
Beck is a genius! You’re up for a deep dive!
I like how he rhymes and then intentionally doesn’t rhyme at the end of the phrase 😂. It’s cool.
