The Extended version on HBO Max felt like I was watching another movie... Revisited... And firm believer this is a much better film than when I first watched it. Amazing how adding 20 minutes, roughly 10%of content can make such a dramatic difference.
Sir, I was impressed with your analysis of this film. You are spot on! I saw this movie and really enjoyed it but to later discover that most film critics would hate on it. I think you’ve justified your review of this film well and as I said, I was impressed! Thank you! Keep doing film reviews cuz your obviously good at it!
I have always loved this movie form the second I saw it. And yes, the extended cut is the better version. It's well written, beautifully shot, and well acted. I can rewatch this movie constantly
My two cents on the matter: when it comes to movie, WWE, sports, the only god is entertainment. So... Fassbender does a brilliant job, Brad Pitt is all that you expect from him, Javier is funny as hell, Diaz and Cruz are jaw dropping beautiful, the violent scenes don't hold back but aren't Tarantino cartoonish either. It's not Sicario, it's not No country for old man, but it has that 1998 Thursday or 2018 American Dreamer charm that brings me back to it from time to time.
This story is a southern gothic fantastical phenomenology study on cartels. So Scott created this suped up glitzy fantastical visual “reality”based on this phenomenology with Fassbender’s subjective experience, of which he is frequently not even around, but that’s McCarthy’s cartel themed “reality” and the counselor’s subjective experience in this crazy backdrop, which I enjoy thoroughly. Thanks for your fun video.i am going to watch some more.
I caught it on HBO back in 2014. Not sure if it was regular or extended. I liked it then and recommended to friends. Told them it's good, deep, that I wasn't sure what exactly happened, and I needed to re-watch. Nine years later I finally got the blu-ray with extended version. Watched it a few times since and it is NOT what those 10 year old reviews say.
The cable being described as "some unholy alloy" is peak Cormac McCarthy but strange to see it in such a modern feeling setting versus the more Western No Country for Old Men.
I remember the main criticism of the movie at the time of release was that it was difficult to follow (understand), if I ever see a movie gets panned for this reason, its very likely to be a thoughtful good movie that the average people will not get ... .. which is the same thing that happens to a lot of great movies during initial release .. I knew from watching it at that time that the critics are very wrong ... I thoroughly enjoyed how philosophical and brainy the movie is ... it really makes me think about things after the show was over...
I just watched it for the first time and I was blown away. Also Matchstick Men and The Last Duel are great Ridley Scott movies. I heard Kingdom of Heaven Director’s Cut is great but haven’t seen it.
I concur with u 100% , saw it at the movies as a recomendation from friend in 2013, liked it, but felt underwhelmed yet had some scenes that were unforgetable, then in 2022 saw the extended directers cut, watched it 3 times, great dialogue, Dameron Diaz not so sure she was mis casted, this is a absolute Classic !!
This is my favorite movie. Well, this and Ex Machina. But I adored it. You have to watch this show repeatedly to enjoy it lol. There’s no way you’re going to get the full message the first time through
Great film review dude. I'll have to check out the extended version of The Counselor. (I only saw the theatrical version and I wasn't too impressed at the time). I find Ridley Scott to be straight up loathed these days for making Prometheus and Covenant. Thankfully he didn't direct Blade Runner 2049. However, in some ways I find Ridley to be underrated considering he has made many fantastic movies in my opinion, such as: Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Thelma and Louise, Kingdom of Heaven (Directors Cut), Black Rain, The Last Duel, The Martian, Alien, Blade Runner and Legend...Hopefully Gladiator II is a hit...(Not going to hold my breath though).
I would add that along with The Counselor, Ridley's Black Rain feels close to him doing Tony, especially 80s/early 90s Tony. Can you imagine if Tony had gotten the Man of Steel gig? People are mad about Snyder but I think they would be equally heated over whatever that film would be.
The title says “revisiting the counselor” not “explaining the counselor.” Renegade Cut has a video about the film that might be more what you’re looking for.
I "liked" this video because I recently rewatched The Counselor and enjoyed it. I subscribed because I also agree that Tony's filmography is much better overall!!!
Insightful analysis. I view this as a thematic sequel to No Country. Where are we in the border drug world now? Not good, to say the least. The lack of exposition, and the philosophizing (not to mention some of Cam D''s line readings) threw audiences off, but I think Scott adapting McCarthy's style was interesting. Saw this cold in the theater and was impressed.
This was an amazing movie, but it was far too smart for the average movie-goer to fully understand. I loved it when it came out, and still find new things to love about it.
Yea I agree it has some moments of brilliance and takes someone that loves films like people that are like us do. You have to be a art house film fan to enjoy this. So if your a movie fan you will hate it. This film is for our film lovers yet it does have some brilliant moments it still just almost on purpose trys to confuse the viewer and not in a good way either it's like a puzzle that's not a puzzle so no matter how much you understand it you'll still be lost at moments because it seems Ridley has done so on purpose so idk? Seen it twice and a half and as I've seen everything it always comes back to me that it's just a message of""your actions once done cannot be changed and you have to live with that"" so that one line somes up the whole purpose and message behind the film the other weird additions just are meaningless and done to confuse people I guess?? It's almost like they took the simple message and then throw us multiple moments of things that make no sense just to attempt to make the audience feel there smart for figuring it out I feel because it's message is said and done with one scene when he gets that phone call. So idk? Ridley seems to either make dumb people feel smart or smart people feel dumb with this film like it's his goal to imo
Cormac McCarthys Version of a Kartell-Movie is a dirty piece of Art. The pictures are very nice. But under this nice pictures you can find creepy things about the nature of humanity.
I felt like a 3rd of the film was just mindless filler , like what was the deal with that scene with Diaz humping the car ? it was just uncomfortable . And who was that young girl at the end? She just appears, says not much of anything and then disappears . Who was the man at the end talking with Fassbender on the phone? what was he even going on about? The whole movie felt very disjointed and i read that people found it to be a masterpiece up there with No country for old men so i was watching with high expectations that it would eventually turn into something other then it did but the whole movie just ended up going nowhere slowly.
Pitt & Fassbender were phenomenal and Scott’s direction was also great. The biggest issue I have was Cameron Diaz. From her terrible delivery to just flat out bad acting, she brought the film down unfortunately. I still enjoyed it but she kept it from a masterpiece in my option
Tony scott....superior film maker? You must be young. Name one film Tony Scott has done that rivals or passes ridley? True romance is his best film..id start there..
Bro Wtf js explain the movie why do Y’all have too tell us all this other stuff we don’t care about just tell me your take on tj he movie nd you talking too wayy too fast
Seen it twice and half time just the other day while it showed again on showtime and I do like a few parts and how the screen play was wrote but that's literally only a few moments and the rest is just to confusing and not in a good way at all and it's a massive waste of millions by getting actors like Cameron Diaz etc she definitely was garbage in this film imo and honestly I've never seen a film with Cameron that she was great it and she's just not a good actor imo but either way this film has some great moments
My god, it was a complete misfire! I would rather watch Alien: Covenant than this drivel. Huge and talented cast and director but so many illogical anti-surprises to handle. Nothing made sense, at least worthy of thinking about. Just because Tony is Ridley's brother makes no comparable sense. They are two different people, you may as well compare Ridley to Christopher Nolan. Do not check out The Counsellor (it's shit) and treat it for what it it is - a total misfire in a great visual directors work.
They're obviously two different people, but there's significant overlap in their influences and sensibilities dating back to their work in commercials and early music videos.
@@TheArmchairAuteur I'm not disagreeing with that, and their influences show that. What I do disagree with is your view on The Counselor. We get introduced to so many new characters throughout without any information on who they are or what they do. Diaz's acting is completely wooden an OTT. The rest of the acting from everyone else is actually great, the only redeeming factor about this incoherent mess. All it is is a series of scenes with no proper flow, and it just limps along until quite possibly the worst ending of any filming I've ever seen.
