North brought in Jed Adcock, Michael Barlow and Xavier Clarke. They've already started this process with their coaches. I think it's fair to give those guys more than 8 months to turn things around.
Good video, Norths recruiting has been abysmal for years, and the whole recruiting team was sacked just a couple of years ago. Only thing in the video I disagree with is North have had no problem letting go of their better players like Ben Brown, Higgins, and Mason Wood who is doing great at StKilda. I think one of Norths problems is they let too many senior players go at once, going right back to when they sacked Brent Harvey, DelSanto, Ferrito, Wells and a few others. That left a huge vacuum in senior leadership on the field, It was also a bad look for North fans, when players like Brent Harvey a 400 gamer is treated like that. I think that was also when Brad Scott lost support of North fans. Norths new recruiting team is only a couple of years old but there are still concerns and strange decisions, North had 2 opportunities to get Harley Reid but chose other options. They get a star in JHF and North publicly shame him in the media for some minor indiscretion until he wants out after 1 season. So many opportunities have been wasted, we cant even seem to retain father/sons like Blakey who went to the Swans instead, North cant seem to attract any established talent from other clubs even when offering good money. North looks like an under 19's team playing the seniors every week. Everyone can see we lack big bodied players and talls, but we still let go of players like McKay, I really thought we had a mole at North who was jeopardizing trades to benefit other clubs, but someone on the inside says its the administration who are over-ruling trade decisions so who knows, I agree with your video though,

Players like McKercher, Duursma and Wardlaw will have their options for long term contracts if they want it. LDU is probably the only big name that is yet to sign.

They can't expedite the development of the young players recruited. Our list is in its current predicament due to the list build and drafting from Cam Joyce. Unsurprisingly his period of tenure represents the exact age bracket we are missing real quality in, 23 - 28. There's enough good coaches at the club, good kids. We've gone backwards this year in line with our younger list profile this year. Darkest before the dawn. We've got X Clarke, Adcock and now Mick Barlow in development. Some nice suggestions but the hard work has been done. Recruit some players in the 25 to 30 year old bracket to occupy defensive and midfield posts and watch the rest flourish further
@aflinsight2023 I don't dispute your points, just feel that much of the heavy lifting already has occured. I think trading for someone like Wines, possibly Battle as a FA who can swing forward or back and provide some aerial contests would go a long way to support the existing crew. CCJ, by no means a strong performer, would have provided a stronger aerial presence if he was still fit and would have been a serviceable 2nd ruck. I've watched an ongoing downhill decline for close to a decade. Once we were old and shit, then shit, now young. Our age profile for the list is similar to the inaugural GWS list build. I'm confident in the direction finally and look forward to 2025. Plenty of green shoots, don't buy into the eternal negative spin from Barrett, Caroline et al who have long been sniping without offering any real alternative to progress the club. The club doesn't need priorities, I think if any assistance is given then keeping the extra 2 rookie spots would be ideal. But as a dyed in the wool supporter, I don't want any more handouts. We will stand on our own two feet. Thanks for your content, I've subscribed and look forward to more from you

They were showtime and owned friday nights...hopefully for the sake of supporters like yourself and others they can get back to that level of dominance...
it has, and always will be a mature aged player issue. Not enough draft picks on the team from the 2010-2016-18 drafts still in the side which is forcing kids to play against men.
Thanks for watching, appreciate it. I honestly don't think I've seen a better hit rate then what these blokes have been able to do over the last decade, absolutely amazing.
Great video and great insight. I'm a Carlton supporter and we made some very bad decisions over the years and we were a laughing stock. The last couple of years we're finally starting to improve and now we're playing finals. I do feel if North Melbourne get there recruiting right and all other off field problems right they can get out of this slump and you're right they need to do everything they can to get the right people at their club.
Thanks for watching. That's the thing isn't it, every team except for the Cats and Swans have been a laughing stock at some stage over the last 20 years...as fans we just have to ride it out and hope that our off field team is quick enough and smart enough to make that process go as well as possible
I reckon theres a fair chance you have gone a little early. You definitely raise solid arguments about drafting, but Will Phillips vs Logan McDonald is not one that is valid. Logan is no where near good enough to be a focal forward. Clarksons 2023 was impacted. So essentially this is his first year developing the team, him and Viney have the blue print. Kangas do need a senior on field leader, who knows if they’ll be able to land one. Zac fisher is looking like a decent recruit too. Jaidyn stephenson was worth a crack, pretty much a free hit and his salary was covered by collingwood. Not working out but worth a shot.
Simple draft filter for NMFC, tall not small, quick not slow. Enough with selecting the League's rejects , and most of all, if they can't kick straight, or take a mark, don't draft them,. These filters equally apply with purging the existing squad - there is no place for untalented dead wood or sentiment.
Great video, very well put together, as a North fan I largely agree with your analysis and believe most other fans would too. I don't believe the club is in an endless abyss, considering the amount of experience that was lost last season to this, hard to counter that which such a young group. There will be a few years of struggle no doubt. North's drafting/ recruiting from 2012ish to 2021 was pretty poor and is probably the main reason they are in the position they are in now. Like you said in the video, you could look at just about every club at some point in the past and point out bad patches of drafting, but its rare to get so many draft misses over a long period of time. No one before the 2016 draft in still on the list (that north drafted), and all the players recruited in haven't worked out either. Also part of the problem was internally the club thought they could ramp up and go again around 2018 but they couldn't which started the mass clear out of the list, as well as the off field staff. Which I believe, if they didn't do, they would be like St Kilda right now, as in always mid table. Winning games but never resulting in anything. The more recent drafting has been pretty good, the list shown in the video towards the end, of players on the list now are signs of that. The off field staff are good as well, they could definitely be better but there is no guarantee that an assistant coach at good team will make a bad team significantly better. I think the draft hand the club took to the draft on the night last year was much better than it could have been. Also our recent history around head coach has been terrible, had 6 coaches in 6 years (or whatever it was) can only be a bad thing. But right now the club needs time to get stuff right and make the right choices at the right time. Changing all the staff again could keep pushing out the time until the team comes good. Definitely agree the club should be seeking mature age players at are at the top of their game so the young players learn off the best, not focusing on the draft as much. Still taking two or three good picks but mainly targeting established players.
Personally I get so frustrated at the media and how they treat it like North are the only team that's ever performed this poorly. Look at Brisbane last decade...13th, 15th, 13th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 17th, 18th, 15th before they made the finals again. Melbourne and Richmond as described in the video. Carlton from 2002 - 2007 won 3 wooden spoons and came 2nd last twice...It's a tale as old as time. Unfortunately I think a lot has to do with the "small club" narrative that gets pushed and it's just garbage. North Melbourne's membership would rank 2nd in the NRL, they are a great club with a rich 100 year history and the AFL is better for having them in the comp. You North supporters must get so sick of the relocation talk every time you have a down year...
@@aflinsight2023 I and I would say most other North supporters would agree completely with you. There is no doubt North is bad right now, so making a video like this is valid, but constantly talking about relocating or shutting North down is not warranted. The off the field situation is incredibly stable. One of the longest corporate partnerships with Mazda Australia, paying off their debt completely, consistently hitting new membership records, still having their training base located in the suburb it's named after and having aflw, vflw and vfl games played there, having played in and won finals in the late 10 years and they aren't the biggest receiver of afl assistance money in Melbourne or the league. If feels like to me, the wider football media feels differently about North. Like people hate Collingwood but it's mainly to do with how big and successful they have been. So they want Collingwood to stay because they love hating on and beating them. People are so in different towards North that they are so okay with them being shipped off somewhere else, they don't even both to look into that claim at all. Not to pass the spot light, I hear Eric Bana talk about his love for St kilda, the club has been to 4 grand finals since their only premiership in 66 one of which was the replay, and they have barely made finals outside of those years. They have slightly higher membership numbers than North, slightly higher crowd sizes, still riddled with debt, haven't been associated with the suburb of St kilda for like decades and get big hand outs from the afl. Why doesn't any talk about relocating them? But most North people are okay with this as it's been this way forever, it's part of the culture to be the little guy up against it.
Quality essay. I have a great deal of respect for Jed Adcock, i hope he stays. One of the issues that North have, is that they followed the 'inside out' recruiting strategy. Getting midfielders first. The issue is that for a team like North, that had to do a full rebuild of their list after a policy of topping up for many years, it is the wrong strategy. Tall, key position players generally take more time to develop than mids. So North should have recruited talls first. North should have Logan McDonald teaming up with Larkey. Instead we have some real developing talent amongst our smaller players, but we have virtually no one who can take a mark. This kills us, game in and game out. North should be using their draft hand for 2025 to draft some mature bigger players. No doubt the Tarryn Thomas situation hurt us, as well as the ACL to Griffin Logue, as well as the achilles injury to Callum Coleman-Jones. CCJ was not setting the world on fire, but he was a developing tall who was important to our structure. Unfortunately the lack of wins this year is having a real mental impact on our list. The second half of 2024 is crucial. It is possible North get no wins this season, and that would be a disaster, because the AFL media already kick North as often and as hard as possible. I mean North are a small club, with few supporters - makes it very difficult to attract players who want to play in front of big crowds. I cannot see any quick way out. I see some commentators have suggested North go after someone like Pendlebury - I disagree. I agree with what you state in this vid - that North have to go after capable mature players who still have something to offer. Does Brady Rawlings have the ability to spot and target these players? I think he does. I think getting Teakle in the mid season draft suggests that North are keen to do this. I mean they also tried with Toby Pink and Biggie - it is just that they need to invest more and get experienced AFL accredited players instead of fringe talent. I am more than happy for Zurhaar and/or LDU being used as trades to get this done. I think both players have talent, but under-perform. LDU has good numbers, but he is not damaging enough because his disposal lacks accuracy. Anyhow. As I said, a really good vid. You do not see this kind of well researched, longer opinion pieces in the mainstream AFL media. Have a sub, and good luck with your channel.
Thank you for the well thought out comment, appreciate your kind words. Pendelbury as an assistant coach when he is finished playing would be amazing but I think his best playing days are behind him. Great point about the mental aspect of continually playing in a losing team, Clarkson and co would have to be managing so much at the moment. Confidence is one of the biggest keys to success and North really are coming from a long way back...hopefully as some others have mentioned, the hard work is getting done and better days are ahead. Cheers
The last time North Melbourne picked someone worthy of a Brownlow was in 1995 when north got lucky with pick 47 being Brent Harvey. We have had decades of poor recruitment.
Harvey's better than most players in the comp though. Ben Cunnington, Drew Petrie and Todd Goldstein have been up there as legacy picks. You can't reach 3 finals series in the last 10 years with bad players
@@richardw1043 North have had some good players, but every team has multiple good players, what we have never had (except for boomer recruited in ‘95) is a competition top 10 player, absolutely none in the last 30 years of recruiting.
You idiot since 95 you say. Go back and do your research instead if talking shit. Since 95 the lowest we finished was 4th bottom until current day. So you don't rate petrie, swallow, cunnington, zeibal, Goldstein, feritto, Harris, wells. We hardly had a top 10 pick in 20yrs cos we didn't bottom out. Do you expect cripps bont Oliver selwood with picks outside 10. Give us a spell mate. The reason we didn't bottom out was through good recruiting from other clubs rocca, nathen Thompson, Colbert, Higgins ect
Great video but super harsh on Scott Clayton, he put together the bulk of the Brisbane Lions 3-peat team (the best side I've ever seen) and put together a Bulldogs side that missed a grand final by a whisker, Gold Coast had great recruits but zero culture and constant walk-outs, and he was only at West Coast for 2 years (right after they had won a flag hence had weak draft hands) so was hardly responsible for their decline. The Jarrad 'microphone head' Grant blunder shouldn't define his career.
Agree to disagree. He had a bit of luck at the Lions, Voss and Aker were QLD boys, the Fitzroy boys after the takeover, J.Brown was a father/son tied to Fitzroy. He started well at the Dogs but Farren Ray at pick 4, Not taking Buddy or Jordan Lewis, Andrejs Everitt ahead of Frawley and Riewoldt plus the Grant head scratcher...there were numerous disasters in there. And i think if you drilled in a bit closer to the Gold Coast history, you will see some absolute shockers. He had 8 of the top 13 picks in 2010 yet not one of those players is in the top 10 for games played from that draft year. Schaade was their first selection in 2011, Jesse Lonergan in 2012, Kade Kolo and Jack Leslie were his first 2 picks in the 2013 super draft when Cripps, Merrett, etc were on the board. Peter Wright and Jarrod Garlett in '14. Cal Ah Chee in '15 ahead of Curnow, McKay's. 4 top 10 picks in '16 for Ainsworth, Brodie, Scrimshaw and Bowes...Freo got Sean Darcy, Luke Ryan and Brennan Cox from 3 picks between 30 and 60. He might have been relevant at a time when Lethal and Rocket were relevant as coaches but the game has well and truly passed him by.
You can't beat North Melbourne's bad recruiting and wasting of young talent over a 12 year period so don't even try. North Melbourne would typically finish in 9th position not playing finals and not getting good draft picks. All these recovery teams bottomed out and filled up on young talent, North until now never did. The three numbskulls in charge of recruiting and list management quit before they could be sacked, along with the coach they destroyed the club. The problem with the draft is a lot of the best players just aren't available to a club like North Melbourne they fall under the father and son rule.
North Melbourne just have to draft what they actually need and not waste picks on what they don't. The 'Take the best available' mentality is why they have zero team structure and have failed till now.
Get rid of all the players, they are trash, and the AFL should get rid of the team as well. North Melbourne are the worst team in the league on all measures
Your correct about getting the staff off field right but north did get advice from rantel who was very good at recruiting in Adelaide. He suggested phillips was the rowe in that draft prob was it was the best of a weak draft. Ligan mcdonald isn't going to be a super star just a role player. You. Mentioned Melbourne's compensation picks which were top 10. North didn't get the same as melb we got 2 picks in the teens. One top 10 pick would have meant at least a talent is coming in like melb had. Then the AFL gave us access to sanders as NGA player only due hawks and bulldogs sook it up cos their pick would slide so sanders was refused. How do you nit allow it when every NGA player was granted prior to that including hagan going to bulldogs instead of north. He would have been pretty handy next to larkey. Got shafted on the JHF trade should have got another 1st rounder which port didn't have but Adelaide did. We should have sent him home but not to his choice of club. The AFL world all turned on JHF cos he didn't give it a shot. We know why when kosh said they were talking to his parents half way through his first year about bringing him to port so the misbehaving began. Why weren't port investigating for poaching a contracted player??? Some say its norths fault for dumping 11 players which only 1 was picked up by a club mason wood a underperforming player. Then hawkd traded not delisted 9 players traded star players to bottom out nobody said a word. Richmond are doing the same thing trading out star players for picks and they are getting applause by media for how brave they are. Their fans don't think so lets see when they get smashed for the next 4+yrs if people applaud what they did. Collingwood under eddy complained about Sydney and thev extra funding then it disappeared when all of a sudden 4 gws players rock up at Collingwood adams, hoskin Elliot, trealor and i can't recall the other but you telling me nobody wanted that young talent common man deals get done by the AFL hence rules fixtures compensation picks father son is all flexible so they can make the moves the AFL wants. Even the judd deal was illegal outside the salary cap and was changed after he got there. AFL know where the money is and help those teams stay at the top for the money. Hence north don't get the same treatment as others. Go back to demetrou what he said when north decided to stay not move to gold coast. He basically said they'll die on their own sword. Since then north have had no help from the AFL like other teams got like Brisbane, Sydney, Carlton, Melbourne have had. What demetrou failed to understand was eddy saved every club by tv deal he set up making a rule in the tv rights that no club goes under everyone gets equal share of the deal. North made profit for 12 straight years then covid fucked everything. North have gone after experience on and off field and are only 2yrs into that plan. I wouldn't be suprised if north split this year's pick 2 and trade next year's 1st round to get 3-4 picks in this year's draft getting the players they need. Then once they start winning games go after contracted players trading picks to finish off the rebuild.
Rawlings isn't running the show anymore its clarko. Emma karney shouldn't be anywhere near the the senior men's giving advice when she plays at a very low level. I think simpkin will be traded same for powell and Scott within next 2yrs to get what north needs.
North brought in Jed Adcock, Michael Barlow and Xavier Clarke. They've already started this process with their coaches. I think it's fair to give those guys more than 8 months to turn things around.

I agree,nm recruiting and coaches pathetic, time to clean house.
Cheers
Let's see how far North are willing to go to get Dan Houston.
Very well done.
Cheers mate, appreciate you watching!
Great video mate! Unfortunately North have people in place who will only make things worse for the club. On and off field.
The players need to love playing for the club… the players don’t love the club 😢
20 something supercoach level analysis.
Can you be our coach?
Saints to win 2-3 flags before North make the top 4 again.
melbourne are hopeless
