Vintage overload, like 4 eras in one game, Ball, Keegan, Dalglish, Rush, even a Channon windmill, great stuff

Great upload. What a classic game. That Liverpool team went on to win so much. Kevin keegan was fantastic. Wouldn't say many of these great players were on 300,000 a week or it's equivalent 😂

That goal by Mike Channon gets better with each passing year, and is simply one of the most beautiful team goals I’ve ever seen. That goal I think involved all English players including 3 England captains. The teams at the top of the English top flight were capable of playing great football at that time.

Thanks Dave, been watching these on Itv4, I missed this season abroad as a kid and looks like I missed a cracker with all teams taking points off each other and a few in with a chance of winning...Kevin Keegan was class everytime he was on

What a player Keegan was! However, I think he underachieved in his career after he left us (Liverpool) in 1977. He won the German league with Hamburg in 1979, but that was all. At his peak - 1980 to 1984 - he was playing for sides (with all due respect) he should have been nowhere near. He could have played for anyone in Europe in those years, but he chose Southampton and Newcastle.

Interesting opinion. He went to Germany for the money I believe. Hamburg were one of the top 3 teams in Germany at the time and would go on to win the Bundesliga in 1979 (and eventually the European Cup in 1983) and Keegan was European Footballer of the year twice. Italy had a foreign player ban back then until 1982 ish I think and the Bundesliga was arguably a close second to the English league. He was 29 in 1980 when he returned to England. Liverpool had first choice but refused. Southampton were top of the league in April 1982.

@@randyborstol2491 Hi there. Yes, he definitely went to Germany for the money (he said it was for 'the challenge', but he quadrupled his wage). Hamburg were a good side, sure; but he only won 1 trophy in 3 years with them. In '76, sides like Bayern and Real Madrid were said to be in for him, but Liverpool persuaded him to stay another year. In 1980, he was negotiating a deal to play for Chelsea in the Second Division but the sponsorship couldn't be put in place. He allowed McMenemey and then Arthur Cox to turn his heart towards Southampton and then Newcastle, when he should have listened to his head. He always was a bit of a strange cove, was Keegan.

Keegan coming back to Liverpool in 1981 would have been awesome (speaking as a Liverpool fan who would have been 12 at the time) but looking back at the Liverpool team from 1981-1984 he just wasn't needed. Says so much about how good a team Liverpool were back then.

Without Alan Ball at that club, Southampton players would even have been able to conceive the possibility of creating a goal like that. I can only imagine the fun they must have had in training with those senior players.

A decisive day in the race for the 81/82 title. Liverpool could easily have drawn or even lost this game, while Ipswich were held at Man City after John Wark missed a late penalty.

Went to watch Brighton play Forest in the premier league last Tuesday. Have to say and admittedly they are both bang average premier league teams; however, the standard of footballers were not in the same league as this lot here. Honestly the players back in the day were streets ahead and playing on sub-standard pitches too. The quality playing here for both Liverpool and Southampton. Incredible.

Brilliant game. Channon's goal for me takes the breath away every time. One of the best I've seen. Gerald Sinstadt was near the Liverpool end and got the stick the whole game including 'How's the party going now?'

Other lesser players would have let a early bad miss affect the rest of their game - not Ian Rush.
