Ah!..The good ol' MK9...must admit it was a favourite of mine to drive during my time as an RAF Fireman.....and that square opening behind the front wheel is where you can plug an airline onto for putting air into the tyres...and once connected the gauge will display the tyre pressure.....
Truck Fire Fighting Mk9 (TFF Mk9) from the Royal Air Force. Had the pleasure of driving these for years, try it with ear defenders on, you can feel the noise vibrating through your body. As someone said, drain the air tanks and toggle the gearbox every day. You know you are driving it when the speedometer hits Smiths 😎
A mk9 . I used to repair them when i was in the RAF. I loved them also the mk8 which was based on a bedford rl. The mk10s 11s and 12s never caught my interest like these. Maybe because they were rear engined . I lot quieter though.
I used the Mk9, the Truck still is a Legend with Ex RAF Air Crash Rescue Fireman. None of us like seeing these Trucks cut about as they saved so many lives, the Truck had a 1250 gallon water tank and a separate 120 gallon Foam tank that would produce 5000 gallons of Foam. The monitor could operate at 28 Bars, but we would normally operate at 14 Bars.
What a beast. Can imagine it fully kitted out for living with a log burner and tiny kitchenette. Parked in a sheltered meadow surrounded by chickens and a veggie patch. Idyllic!
Thais is a scammel chassis and the bodywork was done by Dennis of Guildford. I drove and operated these for 4 years at Brize Norton where we had 4 of these on the run. The reason for it being 6x6 is the need to drive off road to get to an aircraft crash. The cupboards are called lockers and the monitor on the roof had a jet throw of 54 meters. Really sad to see all the pump has gone but hey ho. As another comment said make sure you toggle the gearbox.
Good old Mk9 Major Foam Tender driven a few of these in my past life in the RAF. Make sure after standing idle for a while you toggle the gearbox through all gears, pausing through each for a cycle of 10 times 5up/5down not forgetting reverse this tightens the gearbox belts and extends the life of the box. Also ensure you drain the 5x Air tanks underneath on a regular basis as they collect a lot of water. I should imagine it must be pretty sprightly without the water/foam tanks in, it was pretty rapid with them installed in its day
The indicator switch, it will stay on and turn off slowly. Remove the square looking thing on the back, it's only one screw if I remember, you will see a small rubber sleeve, this acts as a restrictor for the vacuum return on the switch, renew this, or if all else fails remove the red plastic top and put a folded up piece of paper in it, so it prevents the switch turning off itself.
I want to apologise for the joke I made in the previous upload it was a silly joke me and my mate came up with but neither of us linked it to the very sad loss one of our fans had and the last thing I want to do is upset anyone! Recently I have been working really hard on content and not been getting any rest to speak off so I am not really with it as you can see as I stayed up till 3AM to re upload this!. I am not excusing it but it is a valid reason and I am truly sorry if I upset Jamie or anyone else the last thing I want to do is upset any of my viewers so apologies once again.
Anybody that knows you can tell you are a kind hearted guy who would never cause hurt to anyone. It seems in this day and age we go too far the other way and worry far too much about how what we say or do might cause offence. Just continue to be yourself and don’t lose the spontaneity that is part of being who we are.
The chassis & axles are AEC, who were both part Associated Commercial Vehicles from !961. The Thornycroft works was in Basingstoke and production of vehicles ceased in 1969 with production transferred to the Scammell works at Watford. 'Underneath' the Nubian Mk9 is very similar to Militant Mk 3. Significant differences are the Cummins 903 engine and the SCG, also part of Leyland, gearbox. The 903 engine is also used in turbo form in the MLRS rocket launcher, AS90 howitzer and the Nubians 10, 11 & 12. The US Army uses it in the Bradley APC. In naturally aspirated form the sound is at its most impressive!. The Dennis connection is because they provided the body and all fire fighting gear. Be VERY careful about fitting wrong size tyres to the truck. The OE were Michelin XL, those on this vehicle are the later XZL pattern. These rims are for tube fitment, the same tyres went on the Foden Recovery tubeless with a rim seal. Get it wrong could be a fatal! Good luck.
Fabulous truck, love the sound, the power and the potential however I would say just think about the end product before diving in too deep. Regardless of the cost to convert it a realistic 6 mpg with diesel at £9 a gallon (and only going one way, up) is absolutely ruinous. Will you ever be able to afford to use it?
@@classic_britain Great trucks we had two GPM and KYK both were different to the Airforce trucks as they had 10x monitors fitted...i was on fire and rescue at the Royal aircraft establishment at Farnborough and as i joined in 90 we had received a new Mk11 to replace them...but we still used them for training and back up tenders
@@lewiscarr5663 It is funny for sure I did not have money to do it for years done all my theory now watring for the pratcial side as there is a huge wait!

I’d imagine the most sensible and logical plan would be to convert it to a huge house on wheels and then live in it to save £££ or sell it on when complete for ££ …. Or probably both in the long run… Not saying that’s what your going to do but I’d guess that things probably just cost you at least 5k+ so you’re going to have a good plan for a nice old currently useless as a fire truck fire truck… 🙂
What kind of pounds?….and thank you for all your shared enthusiasm, spirit and inspiration!…….started out with a Hillman minx ( Hunter shell ) and have used a 900 turbo daily, for ten years. Very seduced by this tender though
Why hide the number plates? Guess you are going to make a camper out of it as I can't see any other use for it. Surely it drinks diesel like there's a hole in the tank, not remotely useable at all for a learner driver🙄

Thanks m,ate glad you liked the video
Great fun but brutal on the drive shaft with no neutral in that Scammell "hotshift" epicyclic gearbox. Love the V903. Had a ride in an H reg one.
Was in basingstoke the other day, and had the opportunity to look round a thornycroft nubian, and they are absolute beasts. Proper piece of kit.
