The moment I saw the girl my senses went "Oh shit duckling gonna turn into dinner" because she looked similar to a chef to me for some reason and that belief was only strengthened when certain elements came up. Overall I really liked it, especially the art style and the bouncy feel of the animation.
I absolutely LOVE the foreshadowing in this short animation. At 1:20, from the moment I saw the livestock turn into their respective food products, I knew exactly how this was going to end. And that ending did not disappoint. Absolutely stunning piece of art, can't wait to see more.
i played the role of the ugly duckling back in 2nd grade in my school's annual concert, and when i say it left a scar - it did. throughout the entire rehearsal process, i got called by plenty bad words by my classmates and even the teachers said that "i was perfect for the role" while flashing a smile i did not like at me. the teasing continued till 5th grade. this animated film made the 2nd grade me in myself so very happy. i love this very much.
People are rude. Teachers are suppossed to be kind and caring adults, but instead a lot of em are super mean. Just think about this, they went to COLLEGE for a degree in teaching, and were put in CLASSES learning how to treat kids. It’s pretty sad that rude teachers are that dumb.
the ugly duckling grew up to be a beautiful swan, and i’m sure you did too :) it sucks how even teachers can be so cruel and rude, i know nothing about you, but NO ONE deserves that kind of an experience.
I love how this put a twist to the original story. In the original, the ugly duckling grows up to be beautiful and envied. Going by the quote "Be careful who you make fun of as a child." But I much rather prefer how it was presented in this video. The main focus is the 'pretty' duckling. The duckling which gets showered by affection and whatnot. Only for that affection to turn out fake, thus getting them butchered. The ugly duckling is then showed later on and seemed to have witnessed the scene itself. So it no longer despaired over the fact that it was 'ugly' but rejoiced instead because that ugliness saved them. The moral here is that everything comes with a price, no matter how good it may be. You are ugly and treated unfairly but at the cost of your life being safe. You are pretty and treated well but at the cost of being endangered by the people who want to take advantage of your appearance for their own benefit.
Actually, in the end, you can hear another splatter sound right before the video ends. I agree that depending the cards you're given, ugly, pretty, etc, it can change how your life may turn out, but, in the end, nobody can escape the end: inevitable death.
Replying to this very late, but I’ve always interpreted the splat as signifying that the ugly duckling was watching the pretty duckling getting butchered and smiling, or something of the sort.
I think the slash at the end just signifies how whether you’re ugly or pretty, you still get killed. Not necessarily because death is inevitable, but because you’re given a false sense of security thinking “I’m lucky” and then reality hits you in the face. You thinking you’ll be ok because your “_” ends up being your downfall. The other ugly ducklings are shown to be butchered in the episode too so I don’t think the last duck is excused
I love the layers in 0:51 because it sets up the rest of the story so brilliantly. The billboard's radial pattern behind the pretty ducking in a royal red and blue, the words on it saying "King Duck" to confer upon him the status of royalty, but look closer and notice the billboard is advertising the "King Duck" brand premium duck meat. The pretty duckling right now is still a "Prince", his coronation into a "King" will be upon the chopping block of the butcher. When he later sits "on the great king's chair", his doom is imminent. The transformation of the other farm animals into their respective meat product follows immediately after all but confirms his fate. And of course, the parallels to royalty continue to be shown. Excellent visual and narrative symbolism.
So, the duckling becomes someone's pet because of it's beauty, but grows bored with his pampered life. He walks back to the farm, maybe not remembering it, and is mistaken for a regular duck and killed in front of his siblings.
The symbolism in this is great! Earlier on I love the details of the duck's leg being a little boy's leg when he steps out of the car, and his reflection in the mirror being a little boy prince. Him "eating" the other animals is symbolic of the rich and powerful exploiting the poor. And then the guillotine blade at the top of the frame when the butcher raises the cleaver! The flags outside the door being white dripping with red, like a bloody knife! Love this. Is this inspired by Louis XVI?
@@Difelder I don't think you understand what the symbolism is. It's meant to be an allusion to selfish monarchs, the ending alluding to guillotines. Not just "pretty" people. But specifically the monarchs who lived lavishly and therefore looked "pretty" compared to the people around them who were fighting tooth and nail just to survive.
The ugly duckling is an Anderson tale actually! He’s the guy who also wrote the little mermaid (sorry if this seems corrective or something, I really love fairytales and I love sharing info on them)
My jaw dropped at the end lmao. Your style is just amazing and I love how every time the duck walks, it just does a little bounce. I don't really have any words to describe how much I enjoyed watching this.
Saw this, clicked and immediatley thought "Wow why does it give me the vibes of that one animation where a pig was in a pet adoption center and then got turned into food in the end"... I can't say I'm happy my instinct was correct. but wonderful animation and the music and storytelling with it is beautiful and fits so well
This animation reminds me of a poem by Sukanta Bhattacharya, which we were taught in school. The story isn't the same though. The story was about a chicken who one day found a place to stay just outside a huge palace, amongst broken and empty carton boxes with few other chickens. Food wasn't available for him there so he used to shout at the palace walls day & night to protest. Then helplessly he started to wander near the garbage area/dumping ground and found food. He was happy but a few days later, few people wearing torn dishevelled clothes started to visit that place and take away their food. Again the chicken was left to starve. He became desperate and tried again and again to enter the palace but was thrown away each time. He started to dream about all the food inside the palace. Then one fine day, he got to enter the palace. He was brought directly to the white cloth covered dining table. Not to have meal but as a meal.
As a duck lover myself, I gotta say I love this video so much, the animation is beautiful, the song is amazing, and the twist at the end was traumatising and hilarious. Thank you for such a wonderful animation!
dude I was trying to ignore my thoughts that things would go south and then 1:20 hit :'I great animation! love the lineart, style, and colors, and the story's pretty clever :p Edit: the music and sounds are amazing too, they give me an "older children's or Japanese show" kinda vibe (older as in made a while ago, not as in age group)
This is so good! I saw that ending coming at around 1:30 but a gasp still did escape me. Reminded me of the "Can Your Pet" game which haunted younger me
I'd say the pretty duckling had a more fortunate ending. They had a short but beautiful life, filled with joy, many friends, and never had to taste hardship in their life. The ugly duckling on the other hand, were not loved by anyone. Though they lived a long life, it is bound to be filled with misery and loneliness enough to make them say "how fortunate it is to be the dead".
Man this looks amazing. As someone whos currently learning how to animate in high school I can fully imagine all the keyframes and the absolute effort you must have put in this thing, please know it’s paid off. It looks wonderful and you should be proud!
When I saw it for the first time, I thought: "oh no, the duckling will learn that everything comes easily in life and he will become spoiled. What a pity!" Quite weird, I know 😆
Not gonna lie, I thought the duck was gonna become a cannibal (or at least eat other farm animals) when the food turned into his crown, but I’m not disappointed at the twist ending 👀
I love how in the background @ 0:50 the house looks somewhat like a monster, and then in the next scene the billboard advertises the family's duck product 😭
I got goosebumps damn, I was following your contents from svt mv that you made and then I stumbled across this and I thought "oh so cute instead of being the ugly duckling it is the pretty one" and then when I finished it man I've never been this traumatized by an animation :0
I know is is all very symbolic of like egotism and eat the rich and stuff but also the duck is so cute that I almost cried when he died 😭😭still this was fantastic
Awesome and ironic animation, but it’s your “Little Poet” who really captured us and is now a favorite short film of all times in our family!! ❤thank you Justine, I hope (no! I can see it…) you have a successful career ahead of you 💪
I would show this to my little cousin, but never mind, no traumatizing the kids. Awesome animation though.
good call
I was going say... "Aw my niece and nephew will love this!" til I realize... nope. lol
I regret send this to my boyfriend XD he'll probably have a nightmare
What happened after the end? Did the duck die? I hope it wouldn’t
Nah I’d show his to 5th graders regardless. They’d love it.

I thought the duck got tired of being with the girl inside a cage, went back to the farm and got killed?
@@kleo8007yeah they said it went back to the farm and got killed, pretty sure it went there itself.

You can see a billboard when they arrive saying king duck or something
@@dandydanthedapperman7797 Wow, even more stuff I missed. The attention to detail is just phenomenal. Good eye, m8
Just the design alone with the red collar around his neck also is a great detail! We all know that that implies- 👀
Oh God were his siblings skinny and gray because they're "ugly" baby swans or because they're hanging bodies 😱
The billboard probably cut off from saying pe-king duck 😂 the creepypasta

I’m sorry to hear that :/, and I’m glad this video helped. God bless you ❤️
That’s super super cruel and genuinely disgusting your teachers thought that was okay to do :(
I feel bad for you... Hopefully you're doing well now and that you're surrounded by people who treat you fair. Have a great day/evening!

SNAP BACK TO REALITY
this was so good. loved the art style and the twist and the sound track. beautiful.

giving me Grimm Fairy Tale vibes and its perfect 🦆

What a film! Can't wait to see this blow up!
THE ENERGY IN THIS IS SO PECULIAR IVE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE WOW
I like how his fancy red collar changes back to a metal shackle
This is gonna traumatize generations of kids like how we were traumatized with mlp parodies when we were little
I almost screen shared this to the TV while my little brother was using it
At the beginning: Awww how cute!
At 2:05: WAIT WHAT
When I saw it for the first time, I thought: "oh no, the duckling will learn that everything comes easily in life and he will become spoiled. What a pity!" Quite weird, I know 😆
Did I seriously just cried for the adorable duckling!?....I did😩😫😭 Me wanna give it a HUG! :(

The Story, the animation, the music…so amazing and so entertaining! I loved it thank you!
the music and style are so cute but everything turns dark so quickly, i love it
Awn man the animation was so comforting I'm sad with the ending :(
The second the music started playing I knew this was going to become dark
yoo this is the extra ordinary story line i never seen ; man we should make this into a kids poem
I was so attached to this duckling, i cried in the end, not joking im legit crying while typing this
I’m gonna sob why did this upset me so deeply emotionally
I shed a tear over this
Right when the duck started doing his walk, the song Them Changes started playing on my Alexa
Its so cheerful until the end 😫 wasn't expecting the ending1000/10 on animation

In the back of my head: Bet the duck gonna be a dinner
