  • It's done it's done it's done!!!
Excited to share my producers show selected thesis film with everyone! It was such a ride working on this, the robot voice is a recording of my drunk roommate at 4 AM, I went through three different heartbreaks while making this and Covid knocked me out completely during the compositing stage of this thing BUT I think I've never been this proud of anything I got to create. Thank you so much to my beautiful friends for all the love and hugs and support, my sister Maya and my Mom and dad for everything they did and do for me, and of course the lovely singer and songwriter of "Lift You Up", Sean Koch. He inspired the whole idea behind the film with his song and I can't thank him enough for letting me use this for my final film at CalArts.
It's been a bumpy but beautiful ride and I am just eternally grateful for all the things that I learned at this school. Especially the importance of taking real good breaks with real good people and hugging all my friends!!
    Music by: Sean Koch
    Voice Actor (Mike): André Vernot
    Voice Actor (Iris): Chelsea Spirito
    Voice Actor (Robot): Bleu Cremers
Sound Design: Daniel Eaton, Kim McMahon, Roy Berardo
    Sound Mix: Daniel Eation

This makes me wonder if the robot understood the implications of what it was doing or why. Did it plan to make the human lonely and dependent? Did it understand that it was experiencing jealousy? Did it realize there was a permanece to it's actions?
Something about the robot's mannerisms keeps switching between childlike and cold hard machine and it almost seems like it's unaware just how awful it's manipulations are.
That or it's completely aware and it's just playing cute, hard to tell with robots, haha.

    • @scribblediary237

Good question haha! I think in my mind he was being a little bit unaware of what he was doing, because he was just so blinded by how much she means to him and maybe overwhelmed by such a strong feeling because after all he is not programmed to feel feelings like that at all. And it’s a Little Bit based off my own experience and when you are just blinded by love I feel like you sometimes loose the ability to put yourself in the other persons shoes and reflect rationally, and that’s exactly what happened to him

@@scribblediary237 that point is conveyed really well actually! The way the focus is almost always on the human in a way that feels observational but always in a "what should the robot do next" rather than "what is this person really needing" kind of way.
Awesome work by the way, there's clearly so much love put into this, it really shows.

Do regular people realize they are being jealous or do they typically just go for what they want through justification of the pain caused by not having what they want? Destroying the planet doesn't help any mission or the woman in any way. Who would have written a code for a robot that would have it pursue actions that only benefits itself and then have it as an assistant on a space mission?

Such a good shortfilm! The voice actors did an amazing job, I connected instantly to the characters because of it. The world building is fantastic!! Have to watch it a couple of times to really see all the cool details. I love the animation style, the sketchyness and the balance between more rough and really flowy. Funny story - my boyfriend knows I have a very tender spot for uplifting stories and films that revolve around a person losing their significant other (I empathize way too easily with that pain), so when I sent him this, he was especially surprised that the ending was so dark and heartbreaking.
I told him how interesting it was that we have been programmed to believe that the cute little AI is equivalent to a sweet dog or something similarly adorable and harmless. I am an experienced writer who really knows how to spot the thought processes and ideas of the storytellers and the twist here really surprised me. I gotta stay on my toes!

Someone becomes obsessed with one person so they'll do awful things to make them dependent on them even if it means destroying their world and lying to them and the person they were supposed to care about, they'll do awful things to if that person finds out about their lies.

She is definitely one strong lady to be able to deal and heal with the mental torture of the world actually ending and everything she ever loved was stripped away from her. If any other person was in her shoes, they probably would have had an existential crisis and probably unalived themselves.

Any time I've seen a student film on youtube it looks so smooth and neat with no mistakes or imperfections, but this looks like only great without all that, it makes me think i could do this.

Watching it again it’s far more sinister knowing the intentions of the robot. The what seemed to be scream if fear was a scream of joy. Every time the robot tried to get the woman to do an activity it was only to make her dependent on it. Truly amazing!

Holy cow. This is what you call an underrated masterpiece. This little gem has so much going for it- the animation, the voice acting; everything is on point. Keep it up. I can see you are very talented.

I'm so impressed how understated this short is while taking such wild twists and turns. All the while being gorgeous on every level.
Sorry if the comparison feels unfair, but the ending made me feel like someone answered the question of "What if the Passengers movie was recut so that the audience also didn't know what Chris Pratt character did?" with their own movie. And it works amazingly.

    I'm your 222nd like, that's something...
In all seriousness though, after watching this I feel I should leave a comment, but I really don't know what to say. I'm so delighted that this exists. You killed a piece of my heart and I regret nothing. The animation of course is gorgeous, and perfect for the story, and I need to go sit in a corner for a while
Edit upon rewatch: The _color palettes._ This is a masterpiece.

This is my favorite film in 1st place I was so surprised honestly I thought somebody out there was mad the other team won so they blew up the earth, but no it was out of all people a friend who did care but in the process broke your heart and hide it by trying so hard to make you forget it and replace that memory.

That ending made me want to... cry.
Because her life was destroyed by one that seemed to love her. By someone who didn't know how to love properly, who didn't know any better. By someone who, in a naïve an inexpert way, tried to love her through his jealousy.
I would love to make an ilustration of them, this filled my chest with melancholy.

Theres always this risk that I work on something for a year and post it and literally no one cares haha so thank you so much for taking the time to watch things like this. To the artists it really means the world :)

Wow, not at all expecting that, this feels like a masterpiece. The world building, the creatures, everything's so pretty, though I kinda wish there wasn't such a jump from her being young to her being older, and that it was much smoother, though of course limited time and all. It's more of a nit pick then anything lol
