I've got every episode they ever made. Love it, I was watching it back in 1980s on ITV central. I was a kid and we used to video record it at night and watch it in the morning. Love it to this day .
So, it wasn't just the Yorkshire Television region that used to chop and change the schedules for PCBH at the drop of a hat, to make way for snooker, parliamentary debates, etc. From what I remember, it used to be shown once a week, (pending aforementioned changes/postponements), for a while, but eventually becoming a twice week event. I believe on YTV at least, it ran from approximately 1985 until 1996. A series that ran for 7 years stretched out to 11! Nice to see some of the cast as they were back in 1989.
Great documentary - thanks for posting! Things like this, news reports, features and the like all too easily disappear from view so it's great that this was preserved, not just for the coverage of the show but also as a time capsule of those times when it was being aired on British TV and cast members not long after it had completed its run in Australia..
I LOVED "Prisoner Cell Block H", and I'm glad it is still being re-run on British Television ("5 Select" at 23:00 - 01:00 two episode's) each weekday. It is the only 'soap-opera' that I follow. Apart from the "Benidorm" series if you can call it a 'soap-opera'.
Oh the memories…me and mum sister also… ITV Tuesdays 11:40pm & Thursdays 11:15pm.. prisoner cell block h. I lived literally… for those days way back when!!👩🦱👩🏻👩🏽☕️🫖📺 🤫🤗
I remember this being shown on Tyne Tees too - on a Sunday night, though that wasn’t Prisoner night. I thought it was 1988 but evidently it was 1989. I expect most of the ITV regions showed this doco, but scheduled it at different times.
Ironically, Central which showed Prisoner at the fastest rate and completed the run first,, didn’t show this until early 1990. I think most other regions showed it on a Sunday evening in late October/November time in 1989.
Granada, Grampian, Ulster, Border and Tyne Tees all aired this programme on Sunday 17 December 1989, with the exception of Tyne Tees following their respective 23.05 episodes. HTV screened this after their 00.05 episode.
Used to watch it back in the early 90's, every thrursday night after border tv news, or a sunday ....the tv presenter would introduce it.... "and now its time to visit the wobbly walls of Wentworth prision and the the ladies of prisioner cell block H" 😂❤
Yes they used to say the "walls were wobbly", but I have never seen a wall wobble ! I did see the bars on one of the corridor gates bend slightly, when the inmates ran towards it and grab the bars. But never the walls themselves.
I am certain that this was also shown on Central in a post-News at Ten slot, and before that night's episode of PCBH in that region - or indeed they did a similar programme with presenter and later MP Anna Soubry involved. It rings a bell. It was made in Derby where the cast met, and it also had Sheila Florance involved before she passed away. Amazing how Glenda Linscott looks as Chrissie Latham - one would never imagine Rita Connors looking like that.
I wish Yorkshire tv had aired this in the 90's after that run ended just before Channel 5 started showing it. This has been my favourite show since 1993 when i was 13.
About 30 years ago I subscribed to A Prisoner Cell Block H fan magazine, called blockade. It was about 90p or so. It ran for a while then they said they were going to do a bumper edition & it was about £5 or so. I never received it, wasn't sure if it was a con or not? Be interesting to see if anyone actually received the bumper issue.
Brilliant documentary. Paul Lavers was excellent, and I always liked him on QVC too. Those women that ran the fan club were very butch! Didn't like Meg / Elspeth, but the other characters interviewed were great. I would like to have seen more of them interviewed.
@@EllaJayElspeth is a wonderful lady, I love Meg, she has a lot of empathy for the women inside, she tries so hard to help all she can, all the women have a lot of respect for meg.. Meg understands that little more as she was born in a prison.

Wow what a difference seeing Glenda. So used to seeing her being Rita!
I agree. I read some years ago her character in this stage version was Chrissie Latham, or a Chrissie type character.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.

Sounds like the Thames region

The whole family used to watch this in the 80/90s about 11 o clock on a Sunday night. Then it was school first thing in the morning.
