      @@TalkingPrisoner So hard to choose one. As much as I loved Bea showing who’s boss moments, it was the moments where Bea showed her vulnerability that stood out for me. Just shows how good of an actress Val is.

      What a show. Used to watch it in the USA on late night tv...mid to late seventies. So fabulous I can watch it again here on the tubes. Lizzie was my favorite character, Bea was a pretty close second. Absolutely iconic show... Thanks to Australia for this treasure.

    Bea Smith is one of the best characters to come out of Australian tv and Val Lehman did a brilliant job portraying Bea. I think Bea is also the most recognized character from Prisoner. Even non fans know who Bea Smith is.

    That's our Val: "what do you mean 'one of'".before the interview even starts and she fires a shot right across your bow. Loved her constant chuckling she really came across very down-to-earth in the interview. Liked the story about Betty Bobbitt jumping in the pool and getting into a taxi, since she was in fact a taxi driver in the show. Kind of coincidental. All the talk about contracts and such, apparently she was Queen Bea as much off the set as on the set. Looking forward to part 2.

    A few of the comments are saying that Val was self-absorbed in the interview, but to be fair Prisoner itself was totally absorbed in the character of Bea Smith for the first 400 episodes, she dominated the show during that time, so it's a bit of a strange thing to say in my opinion. You're watching the wrong video if that's what you're complaining about!

      @ajs41 Рік тому +3

      By self-absorbed do you mean she doesn't talk about other characters and actors as much as might have been hoped? Maybe her memories of other people are not as strong as her memories of what she was doing herself, because she is around 80 years old and it's likely that those memories are forgotten first before more personal ones.

    • @Dean_dialectic
      @Dean_dialectic 3 роки тому +12

      You’re overstating your case. She played a very pivotal role in protecting the integrity of her character and the show in general as opportunistic directors and producers came and went who had a tenuous grasp of the show. You can see her admiration for founding producer Ian Bradley in this interview and she clearly shared in his vision for the show. As equity rep, she was inevitably thrust into conflict with the studio trying to drag the show in all kinds of ridiculous directions. Ian Bradley’s interview explores this in a lot more detail.
      As for the show after her, it did dip. Anne Phelan did an excellent job as a continuity Bea Smith, but the stories did tend to become more sensational and implausible. Glenda Linscott did a good job too as the show tried to have a soft reboot heading into a darker more morally ambiguous direction, but by then the damage was done.

    She was good in Prisoner however she seems terribly full of herself and they seem slightly afraid of her! She's looking really old now!

    I've always found her arrogant. Definitely above her station. Thank God we have our NEW and SUPERIOR Queen Bea in Danielle Cormack

      I don't think it's her specifically. That generation (Boomers) is an arrogant one. It may well stem from the fact that their fathers/uncles/brothers fought/died/won WW2 so they grew up listening to how daddy was a hero (which they were). But it rubbed off on them. Speak to many Boomers today and they will talk to you as if they themselves fought in and won the war. Even though most of them were babies or not even born until after the war had ended, some many years after it ended. They took on that huge win as their own, simply for being directly related to the victors. Then they grew up with parents who knew how to do without (because they had to during war time), whereas they inherited a time where doing without was a thing of the past and excess was the new thing. Cars, foreign holidays, nice cheap mortgages, having to keep up with the Jones', free education, jobs they could leave on a Friday whilst getting a new job off the street the following Monday etc they also spent their young adult lives being governed by Reagen/Thatcher, both whom espoused the benefits of individualism.
      So individually, a boomer may seem arrogant. But wouldn't you if you grew up in a world where you were told to care for yourself and your own?
      This isn't a hate post against Boomers. It's just to try to look into why people of that generation turned out the way they did.

      @@Irishgui83 Pretty Sure is a Val Leman Thing. I loved the performances of both Beas, But Val Leman as an actress milks her time on prisoner with over exaggerations. She had the audacity to drop hints towards her dislike of Elspeth Ballantyne in this very interview which I thought was totally Unprofessional, In the words of Coral Doran " The said you believe Val Leham is the day you make a mistake, I would love it if they could interview Coral Doran and Elspeth Ballantyne
