2010-2012 Lexus RX 350 Power Rear Door (PRD) Won't Open Automatically (Double Beeps)

- Before you open the hood and check fuses, or rip the trim and check the Power Rear Door Motor linkage - do this QUICK check.
You may be gettin Double Beeps when attempting to open the rear door, or simply hearing the door lock/Unlock motor engage. This can be caused by a "helpful idiot" who decided to grab the door during it's automatic opening cycle and forced it to open. This will cause the door motor to go into a protection mode.
Simply locate the Door Reset switch, in the glove compartment, as shown, and push the switch in (or simply cycle it back out, and then push it back in). If the motor and fuse are in good working order - you have fixed everything, and saved yourself a lot of pain, irritation and money. Best of luck

You tube has been a miracle for me. I have an 03 Tacoma, and after 200k miles, some of the dash lights went out. So, during the COVID lockdown, I used UA-cam to replace every single incandescent bulb in my dash with LED replacements. Now it's brighter than ever, and they should last longer than I will, or at least another 200k miles.

Thank you for this. Had a customer come in and hit the button and said it stopped working from the accident. I checked fuses and power going to the motor. Everything was good. I seen your vid and hit that button and now tailgate works. thanks again sir.

Thank you so very much. You saved me a lot of money. My lift gate stopped working over 1 year ago right after I had an check engine light reset. Yesterday, I took it to an Auto electric mechanic, who did a diagnostic on it, and told me my liftgate motor was bad. I was told it would cost me almost $700 to replace, plus $110 for diagnostics. Last night , I ust happened to watch your video. After getting my vehicle back, I went into the glovebox, and pushed in the button, and that fixed my problem. Thank you so very much.

@@hodar5194 yes they are amazing vehicles. I use my 2010 Lexus Rx 350 for driving Uber. I have owned it for 3 1/2 years, and It now has 324,000 miles. I never had to add oil between oil changes. I have had over 20,000 people in this vehicle, and it is still holding up strong. Thank you again for your excellent video.
It's beyond comprehension how he can charge $100 for diagnostics. If it was switched off at the glovebox there would be no power going to the motor and he didn't even diagnose that.
@zahimiibrahim3602 wow, I did not realize that. I guess they were trying to scam me. I'm do glad I found this video. I no longer have the Lexus, though it was an fantastic suv. It had 349,000 miles on it when I traded it in last year for an 2018 Honda CRV EXL, due to gas prices going crazy at the time.

Thank you so much, the key fob lift and close now works again. The button on the tailgate itself does not appear to work, but seeing how it was faintly rear ended (bumper itself is a bit pushed in now) I could see how the button there could have been damaged in the incident. I appreciate the video.
Dude same thing happened to me! " Have so much Junk stuffed on the glove compartment that must have push that reset button with it .while closing and opening. pressed it in and now works again.! Thank you!
Man did you save me a big headache. I thought this was going to cost me time and money to fix it. I just bought a 2013 RX 350 and this evening I was only getting beeps when I tried to get the hatch open using either of the three sources, key fob, button on the drivers side of the dash, or the button under the lift handle. Under the lift handle on the hatch, where I tried first, there is a small round button to the right and a larger rectangle one to the left of that. I hit the smaller one first. Does that kill the system of being able to auto lift using any of the buttons? IDK. But I know now only to use the larger button when wanting to auto lift using the button at the hatch it's self. I just happened to google to see if I could find a fix before going nuts and taking in to the dealership. Thank goodness I found this video right away, and it worked!
Glad this was helpful, I was partway into removing the rear hatch motor, before I found an article in the Chilton Book that mentioned this. Thought I would take a few minutes to post it, and save everyone else the time, effort and risk of damaging the headliner in removing this small, and expensive electrical motor

I had someone "Help" lift and shut the tailgate, and the tailgate quit working. For reasons I don't understand, this isn't in the Lexus handbook - so I made the video. It can be a real mess otherwise.

For some reason, Lexus doesn't talk much about this little feature. I'm guessing it's there to disengage the rear motor, if you have someone who wants to force the lid up/down and it's safer to disengage the motor, rather than have something break

Thank you. For some reason, it's not really mentioned much in the Lexus Owner's manual. I stared to tear out the roof to look at the motor in the rear; when I remembered about the mysterious switch in the glovebox. So, I made the video right then and there. If it saves you ripping out the roof- and saves you $$, then it was time well spent.

Exactly my thoughts when my Rx350 beeped. I had started removing the headliner, when I thought to look at that switch. I figured that if it saved someone else a trip to the dealership, or spared someone from damaging their car, it’s worth the time to create a video. Glad it helped

hmm, mine does open and close with the keyfob or from inside with the button left to the steering wheel. It also goes down when pressing the button on the rear door itself . BUT it does not open when press the button on the rear door itself. There are 2 buttons underneath there; 1 for opening (in my case it only unlock it and i have to pull it open) and 1 for closing all doors and folding the mirrors.
So, obviously the Rear Hatch motor is fine. The signal from the rear door button to the lock is working fine, however there is a failure somewhere in the signal path from the Rear Door Button to command unit that tells the motor to open. This doesn't appear to be either simple, cheap or easy
@@hodar5194 thx, i can live with it, fortunately the lifters are in good conditions and i only have to liftz a bit. Perhaps its normal on a EU version, idk. and its a Hybrid
I have the same issue. It is a factory setting that can only be changed at the dealership. It is very easy and I’m told lexus will do it for free. It takes them almost no time at all. They just hook a obd reader tool up to it to gain access to the cars computer.

Wrong, the "helpful idiot" deserves an apology. that switch is a simple on/off switch, not a circuit breaker. Someone with access to the glovebox accidently hit it, so it turned the system off. Had you looked at the owner's manual at first, you could have saved yourself a lot of time and money. I yank the tailgate all the time, never had to "reset the switch", it knows when its being yanked so it cuts the power automatically. Go try it, yank it open, hit the close button on the hatch, it will close automatically, now pull the handle to open and let go, it goes up, it works.

If ur battery is low it will not let the door motor open so u need to jump start tbe car then it will work once the engine start. This happened to me when i was messing with the screen settings while the ignition is off. Lesson learn toyotas will not start even if the battery is a little low so better have a portable charger on hand anywhere ya go.
Great data point. Hadn’t considered this. It’s a power issue. It takes some amount of power (volt x current) to operate the trunk motor. If battery is low (voltage is low) then it will draw more current. Current can blow out a motor, so the fuse will protect the motor. Makes sense

I honestly cannot think of another reason for this button. If it was a current sense, sort of fuse - that’s a reason. Short of that; it seems to be an unnecessary “feature”

We have a 2021 RX 350. There is not button in the glove compartment. Where would I find the Reset Switch.
2021 ... that's brand new. My Chilton book doesn't cover anything that new. If you have issues, this should definitely be under warranty, or a Dealer question. For what it's worth, I have a habit of buying a Chilton or Haynes book on any new car I own. I didn't have any luck finding books on vehicles this new. If I am in the Lexus Dealership, I'll ask and post. Please do the same - it's little tips and tricks like this that save everyone serious dollars.

Just an idea, any connections are a weak spot for signals. Wonder if the connection to the rear door switch came loose? The motor works, just the rear switch isn’t sending the command. That’s where I would start
