Fencing, new topper, and disappearing rushes

  • It's been a higgeldy piggledy week with a fencing job started but not finished. The wet weather has interrupted the second-cut silage plans, but the cattle are obviously not too concerned about the rain.
The reseeded grass is coming well and I'll be applying post-emergence, clover-safe spray in the coming weeks. And there's a new (to me) topper after arriving.
But the big surprise is the disappearing rushes in the far-off knock. I'm delighted and very surprised.

love ur videos great work best of luck with the changeover to milking. i did it in 2018 well worth the effort you will get paid for your work instead of selling your cattle for pittance to conmen

Get plenty of shearbolts cos rushes r hard on them wit a topper. Rushes don't disappear on there own

We grazed first lightly with lambs. Then we sprayed the clovermax. Worked well got a good kill. Had to graze first because if we left it for the two weeks after spraying it would have been too strong.

I find the best kill of weeds is to spray just when all clover has one true clover leaf. So for me I'd have sprayed a week or 2 ago. Then let for 3 wks before grazing. For a week you will think the clover is killed but it will recover. And leaves very clean field

The cattle would have lid on the rushes and broke them down, new grass then would beat the rushes coming back especially with the growth that has been there of late, they will reappear though but your topper will go along way towards keeping them down

We find for rushes the best thing is to get slurry on that ground immediately after it gives the grass a chance to kick ahead and smother the rushes for that year
Come the next year you will have to do the same again though

Spray it as soon as there's a dry day forecast, the docks are as big as a two euro coin so don't let them get any stronger.

Make sure you get your clovermax in advance. It can get scarce at this time of year

If u graze the cattle tight enough they will eat the rushes

I have no experience with rushes but I'm wondering if the drought affected them 😔 🤔
