Interesting to see 44806 at Gallows Close as it is currently working on the NYMR in 2024.
Great to see the before and after shots of the depot at Gallows Close and the supermarket built where the tracks used to be.
Sadly we'll never see trains through the tunnel again but it was fun to leave Central and then reverse through the tunnel on our way to Whitby.

I used to go to Gallows Close with my Dad to load up his coal lorry. Filling sacks with coal from the large hoppers. The noise and the smell of it I still remember. I wasn't aware at that time that the Scarboro to Whitby line ran close by.

Most of the Whitby line was removed in 1965 but the link to Gallows was left for a good few years. I think it was still there in the 1980s. Eventually the supermarket was built and that was the end of the remains of the railway line As you can see from the video all the trains heading to Gallows, goods yard and Whitby ran under the Falsgrave tunnel. The first supermarket to be build was, I think, called Safeway.

Thanks for putting this together. I love finding little gems like this in the corners of UA-cam.

Many thanks for this production, Sir! - the pleasant and sentimental journey that it is.
I managed to visit all those places during a visit to the town just a couple of years ago.

That's just a great compilation of Memory Lane footage, all brought nicely together with storyboard narrative. The nice instrumental background track further serves to enhance the atmosphere. Truly elegiac and if it weren't for folks like you, these important bits of local history would be forgotten and ploughed under. I'm an Irish railways enthusiast living in Dublin. Never been to Scarborough, but now I want to go and see this for myself. Some day when all this Covid 19 stuff clears off.... Well done to all involved in this, you've done a great service.

Thanks Niall - Really pleased you enjoyed it :) If you do ever get to Scarborough check out the North Yorks Railway at Pickering. Lots of steams train running . Plus we have a smaller version on the North Side. Opened around 1925 and still a very popular little train :)

Finally found information I've been looking for about that tunnel! What a shame to have such a rich history but so little information available to the general public! Thank you for putting this video together!

Brilliant video brings back a lot of memorys,we used to play in the goodyard as kids and I used to live in direct view of the other end.
Does anyone know if the tunnel was completely filled in?I have heard people say yes and others no.I realise the sainsburys end is but have always wondered if the bricked up end was still just a void behind it,I walked through it several times as a kid in the late 80s

really nice video with lots of information and footage that would be otherwise unseen that was nicely put in context of the whole video montage.

Whitby trains from 1A prior to the introduction of DMUs could only be 2 coaches plus the locomotive with a brake van at the rear unless a pilot locomotive was provided as the Board of Trade regulations limited the reversal of passenger trains to 2 coaches. The maximum allowed speed for such manoeuvres was 10mph.

Just been reading the comments, nice to see that nearly 10,000 people have viewed this video and there are some really great comments -thank you all for taking the time to post a comment :) This video and others that I have done are a labour of love and are there to preserve local Scarborough history.

me and my brothers and friends used to walk through it before it eventually got sealed up. and it did look exactly like the photo at the beginning. just a black hole it was.

Great to see a bit of footage of this mostly forgotten stretch of railway. Like all that were closed in the name of carmageddon, it should never have been closed, and certainly not ripped up and the land redeveloped. I would like to think that now the railways have a bright future in the face of climate change and that roads are not fit for purpose. A lesson learnt at great cost.

Are you aware that there were very few trains between Scarborough and Whitby outside of the summer Saturdays? For example the October 1950 timetable shows only 2 trains per day. There was no freight other than domestic coal on this line. United buses ran more services each day than the railways.

The video was produced using photos and info from our Scarborough facebook group plus clips taken from other films ( credits have been given). The group has been re-named and you can now find us on facebook as Scarborough Bottom End and Old Town. Please feel free to take a look at the group - thousands of photos and tales of life in Scarborough.

maps.nls.uk/view/125628976 is a 25" = 1 mile map of the area. maps.nls.uk/os/6inch-england-and-wales/index.html has maps of the whole country at various scales.

What is the name of the piece of music over the first 4 minutes of the video and who preforms it.
    I really liked it.

Really please that you like the track....it`s my own music, made it just for the video. I wrote and recorded it at home using Cubase. The other track near the end is also one of mine. Sometimes if you upload a video using other peoples music the video gets banned or ends up with restrictive viewing so to get around this I used my own music :)

Very well done, I can fully understand your reason's for using your own music. It is really annoying when a video is ruined by having the music track removed or the video deleted due to copyright issues. I will just have to watch the video often to enjoy it. Thanks.

What a damned shame this was ever closed - it should still be open today. NEVER trust SBC or main political parties.

With only 2 passenger trains a day (excluding the summer Saturdays) and only domestic coal as freight for most of the line, there wasn't a hope in Hell for this line to survive the 1960s. United buses ran more service each day between Whitby and Scarborough.
