Using 2 photographs taken by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe in the early 1880s this short video illustrates the construction of the Larpool Viaduct on the Whitby and Scarborough railway, now used as a walking and cycle route since its closure in the mid 1960s.
Engineering marvels like this are well worth preserving.
Wonderful, thank you. Such a fantastic and unique achievement 👍🏴
Absolutely fascinating, what a fab upload.
Fantastic sight
Well worth a visit 👍
Amazing viaduct I’ve been under by rail, but never walked over it, from New Zealand
There are beautiful views from the top. I live 45 minutes from here.
@@rowanlaurelflynn1234 Hi Rowen how long did the viaduct take to build and what cost have you any idea regards Terry in New Zealand
Walked across it a couple of years ago from the site of the old station to the station at Hawsker,a lovely walk & then a pint & fish & chips back at Whitby, the whole line went to Scarborough, through the Scarborough goods yard (where Sainsbury's is now) & continued through to Scarborough station via the now closed Falsgrave tunnel. As I remember the Larpool viaduct also featured in an episode of Heartbeat
If the original plan had been followed the Whithy and Scarborough Railway would have had a station on the eastern side of the harbour with a steep climb up to where the rest of the line would have been.
Today's cost ~ Four billion pounds. And that's just Backhanders and consultation fee's
I have a print of one of those photographs
What about the Goltschtalviadikt in Saxony,
