Hi there, I suffer with mental health, and I find people like yourself, such an inspiration. Against your health problems, you still don't let it stop you, from doing the things, you love doing &you know will be a challenge to do, but you fight on, and do them anyway . Amazing

The first solo is always a challenge, particularly on the mental side of things. It does pass as you get used to all the sounds of the night. I can’t imagine how much mental strength it took for you to even attempt this with your medical issues, let alone see it through to the end. Absolutely incredible and I take my hat off to you.

    • @chrissyinthewild

Aw, that really means a lot, thank you! 🧡 Being poorly actually distracted me from a lot of the noises in the night - which perhaps was the silver lining! 😂 I can’t wait to do it again now! 🏕

Hello Chrissy, thanks for your honest video. Dartmoor is a truly special place, I love it. I believe that spending time by yourself there, it can help to heal you, whether that's for mental or physical difficulties that we are experiencing. Solitude, you can't beat it. Keep doing it and you'll get better at it. I've learnt by making mistakes, but what a place to learn! Take care, Simon, Somerset.

Well done conquering your fears and problems. There's some good advice on here. I wouldn't get the Garmin Inreach but try and stay in phone signal range. Leave your route and when you camp, you can text your exact position and send the OS grid reference. Someone could be with you in no time. I look forward to seeing your next adventure.

Not a disaster, a success! Well done. I started out solo wild camping at 14 and first camped just across from Scarey Tor near the Army Camp on the Moor Brook. I have the Vango Tryfan 200 and it’s ideal for Dartmoor as the ventilation through each end keeps the condensation down. For bikepacking across Dartmoor, I use a Vango Carbon 200 as it’s lighter but only 3 season at best. Statistically, you’re extremely safe wild camping on Dartmoor. Ultimately, solo camping is a physical but also a mental battle, but do persist as you’ll feel the benefit in everyday life too. The association with the primeval side of Dartmoor creates an inner strength. It’s truly a wonderful place.

Even though you had physical and emotional issues (quite common for first few solo trips) you made it through to the end and want to do it again. So you survived!
Well done and I really do hope that you get out again and again, it gets much easier with practice and the resulting knowledge gained from experience.

Some lovely scenes from Dartmoor and that is a very cool tent. I've done over 15 solo wild camps this year and every now and then I hear unexplained noises and can get a bit freaked out. Your mind goes into overdrive when you're isolated and it's dark. Well done for completing the camp and for uploading the video, both are equally challenging things to do.

How I came across this video I have no idea. You are truly an inspiration and I feel you. Personally I would recommend a longer more comfortable mat as a good night's sleep is so important. I didn't realise this until nighs of tossing and turning and being cold finally to get up as my back can't take no more. Also carbs and sugars I would highly recommend you researching on with your health as for me it's really made a difference. I started having seizures but mines was the lock down drinking so that's stopped now and just waiting to get me licence back then I'll be down Dartmoor loads in fact I'm going VanLife in May. I love it down there but not when it's howling and super wet lol. You had some good weather by the looks of it and I do like the way you film and edit its so lovely to see someone just enjoying themselves. I wouldn't frt a Jetboil to big and bulky and expencive maybe a titanium pot and small burner and gas for less than £30 and your off. I don't use Aluminium and I would recommend looking up why as I don't wana come a cross like a You Wana Be Doing This kinda person hahahaha. I could go on hahaha good luck and lovely to see a bubbly smiley cool person on this place. All the best Ken

I got a new stove recently which I'm very impressed with, it's called the Soto WindMaster, I love it because its small, light and reasonably cheap, but the best thing is as the name suggests, it has a built-in wind shield, I live in Snowdonia and have found it works really well, wind is always a pain when cooking but not so much anymore, and having a hot meal and drink really raises spirits.

I know that one recent ruined Exmoore camp,in a tent that rained on the inside I think the vulnerability of being out in the open triggers early or past trauma and the fuels more negativity I had to ask someone to pick me up lasted 3 days and then started to get a bit delerius.,thought I'll say things I regret or do something stupid so done feel ashamed 15 years in and I've only just really started to crack sleeping in doors let alone in a ⛺ past trauma creates a wired overly sensitized nervous system .

Oh wow, that sounds really intense. I’m so glad you were able to recognise what was happening and get help. Wild camping alone is definitely a vulnerable experience, especially at night, when it’s pitch black with no other stimulus. Sensory deprivation is disturbingly powerful, and I’m so sorry you had such a traumatic experience (both in the past, and during your camp). If/when you wild camp again, I hope it’s a better experience! 🧡

That wasn't a disaster, you went out you camped you survived you went back home. Alls good. What I would say is that whilst Vango tents are great reasonable priced tents the tend to be on the heavy side. A nature hike mongar2 would be much lighter for you, but possibly a bit more breezy. As long as you have a good sleeping bag and mat your good to go. If you suffer seizures you should go with another friend. I go with a diabetic freind and I always tell him he's lucky he's here to moan about being diabetic and injecting himself everyday. Absolutely harsh but true, that's what friends are for 😀

When red flags are flying on the firing range/training area IT MEANS TRAINING IS GOING ON AND MAYBE LIVE ROUNDS ARE GOING DOWN so you should not be in that area for your own safety
