Sir,this is a remarkable video and I appreciate your excellent effort for tackling such a difficult topic and you did it in a superb way. For all English lovers this is a precious video and worth watching.
The best video ever! Thank you so much. I've been trying to learn this grammar for almost a year, and now I feel confident after watching this amazing and completed video.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your class, I benefited a lot, I am from Morocco and I was confused about this lesson until I came across your channel
First, I would like to thank you for such a beautiful explanation. Next, I would like to ask you a question about the verbs that are used with with IT as well as Subject. What I am confused about is which verb is used with IT clauses and which verb is used with Subject clauses. For example, verbs like Agree, Hope etc can be used with both IT ( Impersonal) and Subject ( Personal ) clauses or these verbs can be only used with one of the clauses????
An amazing video. If I don't understand about reporting passive after watching this video, I will not understand at all about reporting passive. Please make more videos. I like step by step with tense and usage.
Thanks a lot for this explanation! It was incredibly clear! There's only one thing I'm struggling with: if the original sentence has its reported verb in the "going to" form, how do we express the TO+INF when building a personal reporting passive? In one of your examples, you changed it into the present continuous infinitive, but then when you explained other ways of infinitives, you said that future tenses are expressed with the simple infinitive. So, is it "the president is believed to be resigning in 2020" or just "the president is believed to resign in 2020"? Thank you in advance!
thanks so much. it was so informative. i've been struggling with that a lot and my efforts to find a good and complete source on UA-cam was fruitless until I found your video. Brilliant. Thanks so much again.
Hello, I like all your videos. I have a question . In the minute 9:40 you put a sentence but I think it's wrong. I think you should put ''THEY'' instead of ''THE CLASS'' (In the example with reporting passive) . Am I right?. I'm not sure :/ Can you help me pleasee? :D
It’s correct. Because that what happens when you use “that” in reported speech sentences. Some elements change. Here’s a video about more basic reported speech: ua-cam.com/video/nkohAsntOfI/v-deo.html Sorry in advance for the quality of the video. It’s a bit old, haha. 😅
Could I ask you how would you indirectly report a passive voice? I mean Would the sentence "the water was drunk" be reported as "he said the water had been drunk" or as "he said the water was drunk"?
Your lesson is very helpful. I appreciate it. But what about infinitive forms of Future continuous, Future Perfect and Future Perfect Continuous in the original active sentences? Please clarify. Thanks.
Hi, thanks for your comment! In those cases using personal reporting passives is probably not the best idea, because they won’t really convey the same meaning tense wise. You can still use impersonal reporting passives (It is believed that...). 🙂
Thank you a lot ı am tryin to learn english nowadays . İn my english book this type is in it and ı couldnt find any turkish videos about and ı found this video thank you Man 👌🏻
It was an absolutely incredible explanation!!!! Thanks a lot! But where did You find out this information? I haven`t found information about using perfect infinitive in passive structures anywhere ( in textbooks, on the websites). Could You show the textbook source or the website link? I think all your subscribers will be grateful to you!
How to report a sentence containing 'there is' in personal reporting method? (like, "People believed that there would be an election the following year.")
Thank you for this great lesson it is very helpful but ı have a question ıt was agreed that the class would have the exam next week, for this sentence why did we change the second part of the sentence”will” into “would “ you Said we always keep the sentence Same after that part for easy reporting passive sentences
It is a very good video in which u explained reporting verbs smartly, But forgive me sir there is something I couldn’t understand. Well according to the rule in personal reporting passive the past simple becomes to have + the past participle of the main verb. However, the first example u gave the police thought that the thief WAS hiding somewhere in the city Becomes : the thief was thought TO BE hiding.. why in this case the rule was not applied Hope you read my message and reply. Thanks for your efforts
Hey! I came across a sentence . Nearly 700,000 of users are thought to have been affected. Why do we use “to have been affected” ? I would be very glad if you can explain.
Please make a video about PASSIVE REPORTING VERBS because I have watched lots of videos on UA-cam but they make me quite confused if V1 and V2 are in the simple past tense or V1 is in simple past tense and V2 is in the past continuous tense. They have many versions of those, so the more I have watched, the more I become confused. Ex1: They said Tom killed the man. Version 1: Tom was said to have killed the man. Version 2: Tom was said to kill the man. So, which one is correct? Ex2: They said Tom was watching TV. Version 1: Tom was said to have been watching TV. Version 2: Tom was said to be watching TV. So, which one is correct?
I learned more with you in 23 minutes that with my teacher in a complete week. Thanks!
