The photo is the USS Cushing, a Mahan-class destroyer, taken in July,1936 during her pre-commissioning trials. She was sunk Nov. 13, 1942 during the Battle of Guadacanal.

The word “kill” is scrupulously avoided in the narrative, replaced by “terminate” almost everywhere. I doubt that this was the case with the original text of the book. Is this edit due to fear of UA-cam censors?
