Janeway is my favorite Trek captain. Muglrew was and is amazing as Janeway. Her voice, her inflections, movements, and her theatrical hand movements. Love love love her.

Now, you can try to stop us from getting to the truth, but I promise, if you do, I will respond with all of the 'unique technology' at my command. Janeway, out!" More of a line than a moment, but one of the most badass of any captain, in my opinion.
Always remember that if this is prime universe Janeway, imagine what mirror universe Janeway would be like... But for me, one of her most underrated badass moments which sadly didn't make this list was her ordering the destruction of the Caretaker's array knowing full well what it would cost her and her crew, but also knowing that it had to be done. She showed her stones on that one and proved that she's willing to make the hard calls the chair demands.
Voyager is my favorite Star Trek content ever. How I have waited for a Voyager movie, which sadly was never made. Janeway is generally one of the best characters ever, walking the fine line between badass authority and vulnerable woman. I could have watched this show for 30 seasons.
"Scientific Method" is my favorite on this list. The science team leader is deadly calm throughout most of the encounters with Janeway, but she never knew how badly the experiment would backfire. I would love to see how her superiors reacted.
I assume the scientists died attempting to escape the binary star system before contacting their superiors. Or they learned not to mess with Janeway therefore avoiding all Fedration vessels in the future. 😁
Not to mention that episode has some of the funniest demonstrations of Vulcan humourous remarks? "Shall I flog them as well?" or "It was clearly an understatement". The chemistry between Mulgrew and Russ was pure gold.
the alien's superiors would say humans are scary no wonder all those aliens wore brown so their experimental subjects would know that they had soiled themselves
I can't remember the title of the episode, but it was when the crew was all in a shared dream. Janeway tests the theory that they're asleep by walking into Engineering as the warp core losses containment. "Either I've become impervious to antimatter explosions... or we're still dreaming."
Of all the Captains of Star Trek, Janeway was the best and most well written. All through the Voyager series, she grew with the writers making her into a captain and woman for the record books. Thanks for showing me my favorite ST character once again. I'm still looking forward to how Pike is shaping up in Strange New Worlds, but no one made more sense than Janeway with the Starfleet code book under her arm.
A little behind the scenes bit for Scientific Method. Mulgrew, who's a smoker IRL, quit for the week they were filming to really portray the stress Janeway was under. Now THAT is devotion to the craft.
Hello! I've never been to the TrekCulture channel nor have I seen any of your videos. I'm new here. But this is my first video! And all I've got to say is "THANK YOU!!!!" Janeway has been a favorite of mine for decades. I've never been able to describe why I love the character so much. But you've perfectly described it! Every episode! Every scene! Every word! Janeway rocks! As a Janeway fan, I am PROUD to see this video! I grew up with a sexist dad who HATED Voyager! He thought Janeway being a female captain was a BIG MISTAKE! He even said that people who watch Star Trek: Voyager were people who "need to take medication". I once asked him what his favorite Star Trek captain is. He answered me and said "But I never liked Janeway. Females can't be captains!" I grew up, watched every episode of Star Trek: Voyager and believed he was wrong! DEAD wrong! Janeway is a perfect example of how any captain of any "gender" SHOULD be! As well as being a good role model for females EVERYWHERE! Thank you once again for making this video! I'm now a subscriber! :D
I am convinced the reason Janeway was not stopped from bringing Voyager home in Endgame is because the Captain of the Relativity realized he would actually have far less trouble from her if he just lets her have this one.
Jane way is my favorite captain too! I loved Voyager. I like how they had to be self-reliant and find their way home. It had more exploration than other series too. Thanks for the video 😊
Seemed like Janeway's beef with the Borg Queen got super personal after the Borg Queen's comment to Harry Kim. It feels like Janeway had a special place in her heart for the FOREVER Ensign Kim. I think from that moment, Janeway said, "Tell me you DID NOT just threaten Harry Kim did you!!! It's on like a steamin' pot of neck bones now BISH!!!"😂
My Fave too is Janeway too, because she was a strong captain that knew she may not live the 70yrs+ journey, knew they were lost and though life and journey may be hopeless remained positive, was not only their leader but a mother figure to her crew, but as well was a good judge of character, and yup though a woman a badass as well...
IMO, THAT"S how to make an actually good "Strong Female' character. She IS competent, strong-willed and resourceful, but never loses her feminity(?)... Theres a Kate Mulgrew statue here in Indiana (Avery Brooks is also from here)🖖
I wouldn't say she always had a "solid moral compass". She has a solid idea of what she thinks is right and wrong, but she can also be incredibly stubborn and insist on what she thinks is right (in a situation where she is emotionally involved). Tuvix may be one example but there's also one from this video, where she tortures the member of another captain's crew because she thinks the captain did bad things. She is idealistic but sometimes oversteps "morally right" boundaries to do the right thing. However, this is exactly why I like her so much. She definitely wants to do the morally right thing but sometimes gets caught up in her righteous anger and does something that is questionable. I think that makes her human and, moreso, relatable. Metaphorically speaking, she is the kind of person to punch someone in the face when she sees them bullying a third party. Does violence solve the bullying? No. Is violence the morally right choice here? Most likely not (depends on your moral compass I guess). Does it _feel_ right? YES.
@@LeoTheDarkAngel It's a quibble, but I will say that violence does solve the bullying. Bullies tend to be cowards in their own right hence why they use force on people they don't expect to fight back. The moment that person does fight back, bullies tend to lose interest.
@@joelellis7035 I get what you are saying, though, in my example it wasn't the bullied person who fought back and besides that, even if it was the bullied person, the bully would most likely just look for another victim, since their internal conflict was not resolved simply by punching them. There may be cases where they will refrain from doing it again if they get punched often enough, however, this would be a case of "ruling by fear" which is not long-term-oriented, nor does it align with Starfleet morales I'd say. (which is what this was orignally about :D )
There’s more than enough for a part 2! Some personal favorites include… “Dismissed…That’s a Starfleet expression for, Get Out.” “I don’t like bullies. I don’t like threats. And I don’t like you.” and “I’m only gonna say this once. Coffee. Black.”
Katherine Janeway and Johnathan Archer will always be my favorite captains for the simple reason of them being alone and without starfleet's support for the majority of their expeditions and having to rely on their own wit and strength to get them though difficult situations.
My favorite Voyager episode is season 4 episode 7, "Scientific Method", aliens that are out of phase are performing experiments on the crew and Captain Janeway. When the captain finds out she sets of course in between two stars to shake off the alien ships that are tattoo Voyager, in doing so threatening to destroy Voyager itself if necessary.
Totally agree! tough yet compelling and empathetic character. Many hardheads did her wrong. Toughest decision and best episode imho was Tuvix. Sacrificing a living being to save two, a decision of a machine, it broke her visibly as she left the sickbay. I felt that 😢 these are the burdens of a true captain - making unpopular and sometimes questionable decisions for a higher good (and failing as well)
Saw the thumbnail and thought, "gee I wonder which TrekCulture person is the host of this video?" 😊 We love your enthusiasm for Janeway, Voyager and all things Star Trek, Ellie
Hey Ellie, I think you said Badass almost as many times as the Borg appear in Voyager! 😂. Not counting 7 of 9 . The one where she went full on Ripley was awesome 👍. Happy holidays to my Trek Culture family! 🤘😁🖖🇨🇦🕊️❤️
8:57 not-so-known Fact about "Year of Hell". It was supposed to be the whole season, comprised of the Saipan. Kurtwood Smith was supposed to have his year of Star Trek in season 4 of Voyager.
And while I think using the while season to tell the story would have been awesome, the reset at the end would have made it all feel unnecessary. It works for an episode (or two) but erasing a whole season might have been a bit much.
It's like you have read my mind. Just about to Starr season 4 today. Borg!!! I love Janeway with an unhealthy passion. Lol. If she isn't on screen my brain goes "Where Janeway? Janeway NOW!!"
One of my assignments in my first gender studies class in college was to pick a character in a TV series or movie and determine if they showed more traditionally masculine traits or feminine traits. I chose Janeway, and while there was a decent amount of feminine traits shown, she mostly portrays traits of masculine character archetypes. It was a fun assignment
Colleges came up with the lamest Courses for Millennials and Gen X Like Gender studies is the sort of liberal arts nonsense that the right loves to ridicule.
Masc/Femme based on which society's metric? I've always struggled once I start thinking about that, coz no matter what trait you choose, there's usually a community somewhere who does the opposite
It might be interesting to look into what Star Fleet learned from Voyager's experience. The addition of a cook in Picard Season 3 seems like a lesson to me as Voyager very much needed a cook for its survival despite Neelix' cooking not always being as appetizing as it could be. What could Star Fleet have learned from Voyager's travels?
NX01 had a chef and 1701-D had a bartender... 1701, no bloody A, B, C, or D and Voyager were clearly exceptions. And with as many crewmembers as died in the initial stranding, the presence of a full kitchen in the mess implies Voyager probably initially had one as well
omg thanks for this ! i loved voyager growing up i was born in the late 80s so the intro theme to voyager is one of myearly memories and is a well of nostalgia for me lol
I don't know if Mulgrew got any individual award nominations for particular episodes, but I always loved her in Scientific Method, the sense of her slowly losing it whilst under increasing amounts of experimentally induced stress was palpable!
Janeway was never my favorite captain (that would be The Sisko), but I always _respected the Heck_ out of her. I would have hated being a member of the Voyager crew, but there's no one I would rather have as my CO if I were stuck in the Delta Quadrant.
So, I have been a Trek fan most of my life, and for the most part my family ignored it. When Voyager hit the airwaves, however, THAT got my mom's attention. And funny enough I give my mom credit, she started watching the other shows and the movies with me. While she was lost half the time due to "technobable" she understood why I had truly gotten attached to practically every character. Voyager however, is the only show she watched from start, to finish, even if I was not home watching. Janeway had some great beast mode moments, and a fight against the likes of her, AND Sisko working together?..... Two people that are the embodiment of "F*** around and find out"..... Win or lose, they will make sure everyone they go against regret messing with them. And I love it.
"Temporal Prime Directive issues aside..." Since when did Kathryn Janeway give a damn about the Temporal Prime Directive? She literally drove a timeship captain insane with all of her incursions.
I felt sorry for cpt.Rudy Ransom, his ship was weaker and more damaged than the Voyager and he did unspeakable things to save his crew, which he treated like family. Cpt.Archer did unspeakable things to save his crew and his species, too.
Bryan Fuller came up with the idea that "The Year of Hell" was actually going to be a whole season, and the writers really became energized at the idea. Brannon Baga was really enthused pitching the idea to Rick Berman, but he said "nyet" and it became a two-parter instead. What's your opinion of a season-worth "Year of Hell"?
For all the attention Jeri Ryan got as Seven, Janeway walking into engineering, stripping down to a tank top and slamming that knife into her belt will always be the sexiest thing ever seen on Voyager.
I do agree that Janeway is one woman and captain NOT to mess with on any given day. I think one of her first biggest moments is the entire season one. It is trying to merge two very distinct crews into a somewhat cohesive unit without them killing each other.
Janeway is a fantastic character. I've always thought Voyager was a lesson in unfulfilled expectations. It had its excellent moments, and fascinating characters, but it never QUITE lived up to the promise of its unique premise and for long stretches at a time its characters and their unique situation were not effectively utilized. Janeway was not entirely immune to those inconsistencies in writing (as per your lists of some of the questionable things she did), but she (along with Tuvok, B'Elanna, Paris, and Seven) was the one who often continually rose above it to produce an excellent and consistent, and definitely badass, character.
Allowing herself, Tuvok and Torres to be assimilated so she could give the drones in unimatrix zero a fighting chance to resist the borg is one of the most bad ass things in Star Trek history. I wouldn’t even want to set foot on a Borg cube let alone get voluntarily assimilated with or without a neural suppressant. Having to see yourself go through body horror being transformed into a drone is one of the scariest things ever. It might have been a subpar episode to many but you gotta admit that I don’t think any of the other captains would have done something like that. Being in the Delta quadrant or not. Plus this made the queen have to self destruct a lot of borg ships and she has to destroy the tactical cube at the end of the episode. Only Janeway can make the Borg scramble like this.
When the Evil Clown AI said as it was dying "I'm afraid.." and copy Janeway said "I know.". That was my most favorite bad ass moment for sure.
That episode was followed by Tuvix and when she walks away. Her face. Damn. Just absolute horror and disgust at what she did followed by a resolute look that said "It had to be done" I just watched those 2 episodes for the first time last week. Cemented Janeway as my Captain.

Now, you can try to stop us from getting to the truth, but I promise, if you do, I will respond with all of the 'unique technology' at my command. Janeway, out!"
More of a line than a moment, but one of the most badass of any captain, in my opinion.
Once saw a review
"Wich is a weird thing to say to someone as you trespass on their ship simple because you out gun them"
My favorite one has to be "target their cargo hold... time to take out the garbage!"
The fictional Janeway from Living Witness is pretty much mirror universe Janeway.
I've said it a hundred times, I'll say it again. Janeway is my favorite Star Trek captain.
There are three ways to do things: the Right way, the Wrong way, and the JANEWAY.
Good lord, why hasn't this line been in the show?!?
Genius!
Clever clever
the Jane..way....always the correct way , and my fave captian
Yes, and the jane-way is the correct one!
Voyager is my favorite Star Trek content ever. How I have waited for a Voyager movie, which sadly was never made. Janeway is generally one of the best characters ever, walking the fine line between badass authority and vulnerable woman. I could have watched this show for 30 seasons.
Only 10? I seen her being a badass way more than that ❤❤❤
Her badass moments can't be held by any one list!
"Scientific Method" is my favorite on this list. The science team leader is deadly calm throughout most of the encounters with Janeway, but she never knew how badly the experiment would backfire. I would love to see how her superiors reacted.
"I'm sorry, what did you just say? You did WHAT?"
I'm sure she would like to see that too, since I'm really hoping she was on the ship that shattered on Voyager's hull.
“Understandably, Janeway was pissed!” 🤣🤣🤣😭👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤❤❤
At a time when emotionally stunted, violent little girls are being touted as strong, it's good to have a Janeway masterclass in real empowerment.
You forgot the best line of End Game -
Admiral Janeway: "Must have been something you assimilated"
Scientific Method Janeway “You can’t kill my crew, only I can kill them”
Seemed like Janeway's beef with the Borg Queen got super personal after the Borg Queen's comment to Harry Kim. It feels like Janeway had a special place in her heart for the FOREVER Ensign Kim. I think from that moment, Janeway said, "Tell me you DID NOT just threaten Harry Kim did you!!! It's on like a steamin' pot of neck bones now BISH!!!"😂
oh for sure remember Kim was the "baby" of the crew fresh out of school so she always had "extra" protection over him
Capt. Janeway to Capt. Ransom: "YOU BETRAYED YOUR UNIFORM!"
Theres a Kate Mulgrew statue here in Indiana (Avery Brooks is also from here)🖖
What an episode of Star Trek Voyager Macrocosm when all hell broke loose on the ship.
Janeway was such a badass with a big heart and a solid moral compass. That is what made her character so amazing.
Tuvix. . . . 🤔
She wanted to send her crew a message. Mammy janeway will kill for you.
Moral quwarm?
You've convinced me want to watch the entire Voyager show again. Thank you 🖖
You forgot the best part of number 1.
"Must have been something you assimilated..." in that same deadpan tone.
There’s more than enough for a part 2! Some personal favorites include…
“Dismissed…That’s a Starfleet expression for, Get Out.”
“I don’t like bullies. I don’t like threats. And I don’t like you.”
and
“I’m only gonna say this once. Coffee. Black.”
Starfleet captains don’t easily succumb to fear……
Clown: I’m afraid
Captain Janeway: I know
Ok who has not heard of trek culture at this point; janeway is my favorite.
Ellie your janeway outfit is awesome
Katherine Janeway and Johnathan Archer will always be my favorite captains for the simple reason of them being alone and without starfleet's support for the majority of their expeditions and having to rely on their own wit and strength to get them though difficult situations.
My favorite Voyager episode is season 4 episode 7, "Scientific Method", aliens that are out of phase are performing experiments on the crew and Captain Janeway. When the captain finds out she sets of course in between two stars to shake off the alien ships that are tattoo Voyager, in doing so threatening to destroy Voyager itself if necessary.
Janeway doesn't take shit from anyone.
What a woman ! 😁
Totally agree! tough yet compelling and empathetic character. Many hardheads did her wrong.
Toughest decision and best episode imho was Tuvix. Sacrificing a living being to save two, a decision of a machine, it broke her visibly as she left the sickbay. I felt that 😢 these are the burdens of a true captain - making unpopular and sometimes questionable decisions for a higher good (and failing as well)
Sweet and caring as a mother and dangerous and fierce as one to her foes to.
Janeway is the ultimate Mama Bear for her crew
Saw the thumbnail and thought, "gee I wonder which TrekCulture person is the host of this video?" 😊
We love your enthusiasm for Janeway, Voyager and all things Star Trek, Ellie
Hey Ellie, I think you said Badass almost as many times as the Borg appear in Voyager! 😂. Not counting 7 of 9 . The one where she went full on Ripley was awesome 👍. Happy holidays to my Trek Culture family! 🤘😁🖖🇨🇦🕊️❤️
She could convey so much with just her voice.
right? I also love Kate Mulgrew as the voice actress for Flemeth in the Dragon Age franchise
And her eyes they don’t call it the death stare for nothing
8:57 not-so-known Fact about "Year of Hell". It was supposed to be the whole season, comprised of the Saipan. Kurtwood Smith was supposed to have his year of Star Trek in season 4 of Voyager.
And while I think using the while season to tell the story would have been awesome, the reset at the end would have made it all feel unnecessary. It works for an episode (or two) but erasing a whole season might have been a bit much.
@@QBCPerdition And Janway's line "This is a year I'd like to forget" at the end is absolutely perfect!
I believe that in the early 2000s we called that phaser rifle "Betsy" 😂
Or "Vera"
It's like you have read my mind. Just about to Starr season 4 today. Borg!!! I love Janeway with an unhealthy passion. Lol. If she isn't on screen my brain goes "Where Janeway? Janeway NOW!!"
One of my assignments in my first gender studies class in college was to pick a character in a TV series or movie and determine if they showed more traditionally masculine traits or feminine traits. I chose Janeway, and while there was a decent amount of feminine traits shown, she mostly portrays traits of masculine character archetypes. It was a fun assignment
Kirk in a skirt
@@willwardc.hughes8404 Janeway didn't make out with nearly enough aliens for that comparison.
Colleges came up with the lamest
Courses for Millennials and Gen X
Like Gender studies is the sort of liberal arts nonsense that the right loves to ridicule.
@@GabePuratekuta So true!
Masc/Femme based on which society's metric? I've always struggled once I start thinking about that, coz no matter what trait you choose, there's usually a community somewhere who does the opposite
"Now this is how I prefer the Borg. In pieces" -- Kathryn Janeway
You could make a drinking game with the amount of times Ripley is mentioned...
And with as many crewmembers as died in the initial stranding, the presence of a full kitchen in the mess implies Voyager probably initially had one as well
Q "Dont provoke the Borg"
Borg "Dont provoke Janeway"
omg thanks for this ! i loved voyager growing up i was born in the late 80s so the intro theme to voyager is one of myearly memories and is a well of nostalgia for me lol
For quite a while, I had set it so when my computer started up, the Voyager theme played as the start up sound. The whole thing.
I don't know if Mulgrew got any individual award nominations for particular episodes, but I always loved her in Scientific Method, the sense of her slowly losing it whilst under increasing amounts of experimentally induced stress was palpable!
I was hoping Counterpoint would make the list. Possibly my favorite Voyager episode
Janeway was never my favorite captain (that would be The Sisko), but I always _respected the Heck_ out of her. I would have hated being a member of the Voyager crew, but there's no one I would rather have as my CO if I were stuck in the Delta Quadrant.
She was the one who got her crew stuck in the Delta Quadrant to begin with. LOL. Some captain. LOL.
There’s the right way, the wrong way, and the Janeway.
I’ve recently been rewatching a bunch of Voyager episodes. This video has given me a fine watch list :)
I still love her “Year of Hell” line, “Time’s up!”
Janeway will always be my favourite captain, no matter what.
Mine too
I know it's not "that" badass, but the way she dismisses Q. It's like strawberry velvet cupcake deliciousness level.
I literally googled badass janeway moments a couple weeks ago and didn’t find much… so great 🤙
I'm heartbroken at the missed opportunity: "Have Your Kate and Eat It Too"
"Temporal Prime Directive issues aside..."
Since when did Kathryn Janeway give a damn about the Temporal Prime Directive? She literally drove a timeship captain insane with all of her incursions.
Voyager vs. Equinox: YOU BETRAYED YOUR UNIFORM!!!!! 2.0
I felt sorry for cpt.Rudy Ransom, his ship was weaker and more damaged than the Voyager and he did unspeakable things to save his crew, which he treated like family. Cpt.Archer did unspeakable things to save his crew and his species, too.
You can do any kind of things 3 way.
1. The right way.
2. The wrong way.
3. The Janeway.
Resistance is futile when Janeway is on the warpath.
Funny, Janeway is the only captain who willingly confronts the Borg with a smile and a gleem inherent eye! 😄
My fav Capt!
No it would have been overkill
I need... Badly need a Star Trek Janeway series.
We got one. It's called Prodigy... and Paramount wouldn't commit to it
Absolutely
Janeway, getting the Capt'n cred she deserves!
Janeway became my favorite captain for sure. Thank you for making this cool little video right in time for Christmas. ❤
Voyager by far my favorite. Captain Janeway felt the most human of all the Star Trek Captains. All others were just too perfect.
Have you seen Ben Sisko of DS9?
@@sureshmukhi2316 Do you feel Ben Sisko was more imperfect than Captain Janeway?
@@lordvoldamort4606 check out episodes "In The Pale Moonlight" and "For the uniform".
Best video yet from Elie.
For all the attention Jeri Ryan got as Seven, Janeway walking into engineering, stripping down to a tank top and slamming that knife into her belt will always be the sexiest thing ever seen on Voyager.
I agree
Honorable mention: “delete the wife” 😂
You know, I think Janeway might be Ellie's favourite character........... :P
I think last moments of "The Thaw" is also very badass.
As soon as I heard the voice I couldn't help but picture Ellie in her Captain Janeway outfit. Stay awesome!
Ellie + Janeway YESSSSSSS. Janeway is my favorite too!
I think Janeway was the most badass in the Macrovirus episode.
I saw this was a Janeway video and immediately I thought, "OK, Ellie's narrating this one." Glad to see I was right.
