More coffee, at what cost? Aeropress XL Review.

- I've used the Aeropress XL for about 3 months now. In this video, I will take a look at how it brews in comparison to the original Aeropress, how it's held up to the rigors of a commercial setting, and analyze its use for the home or professional barista.
It comes with some pretty nice accessories. The more I use it, the more I especially like the brewing carafe. I said in the video I wish it were glass but on further consideration I am glad to have such a durable plastic one. It surely would have broken at the shop by now if it were glass.
So the inverted method: I did more testing and I do think I get more consistent results using it. I can see the danger of burns but it hasn't really been an issue. Be careful though if you use it around other people and keep it in a safe, stable place. The only time I've burned myself with the Aeropress was with the original when I flipped it but forgot to put a filter in the cap and it spilled over my hand! Oops...
I haven't taken it hiking yet, but I plan on making a short video about it and see how it goes. I think the biggest issue will be heating enough water for it. I didn't consider that when I said it's still quite portable for adventures. It will take a lot more fuel in my butane burner to heat enough water.
I plan on making some more videos about the XL. I need to experiment more with recipes in it.
Do you have a favorite Aeropress XL recipe? Let me know in the comments and I will try it!
Thank you for watching!
Fernando from AeroPress here!
Thank you for the XL review! The stainless steel filter and Flow Control Filter Cap for the XL comes out early 2024, so you won’t have to invert it 😏
Thanks for the information! That’s exciting news!!
Any idea if this is going to be coming out in a clear version like the original size?
@@geraldl5221 hope so! i will keep tweeting at them until they do! haha
Well done, thanks for the information.
Wonderful work. Very informative!
Thank you!! Appreciate it!
Very nice channel and quality. Looking forward to other videos. Good luck!
I appreciate the feedback! Means a lot!! I hope to keep getting better.
I still do Immersion with the XL as I am use to it from little brother, and thus far, it is not hard for me to do and still careful doing so. Only I would say to others, "Don't do this but if you do...Start off in a sink, small tub/or some kind of bin in case of an accident." LOL It is fun to use.
Appreciate this review - on my way to REI to purchase one.
Awesome!! I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. 15 year old Bodum french press died and it's replacement from Amazon, cost more, was of poorer quality and had machine grease on it (ew). Returned that and got the AeroPress XL. Hope to give it a maiden voyage this weekend and came across your video for a quick rundown.
So awesome!
Thank you!!
Great funny video. Just subscribed. Loved the loneliness and the curious outside cat shot. Just a tip for future vids people/coffee nerds like specs. Inner diameter, outer diameter, wall thickness, weight, etc. compared to the original. Invest in a set of calipers and use your fancy timer scale. Time how long it takes to weigh the aeropress. Why? I don't know, all I do know is that I want some stats with my humorous ennui.
Hey! Thank you so much for watching and subscribing!! Excellent suggestions too, I appreciate it!
Your video auto played for me while doing busy work, and it was pretty shocking production quality for a channel with such little subs still. I'd love to see more deep dives from coffee channels in general in 'types' of coffee. I'm a tea guy and there are nice long breakdowns on the platform of how various teas are collected, what flavor profile they have, where they've come from, how they like to be prepared etc.
I have a Baratza Encore Esp, an Aeropress Go and a ceramic V60 cone and I like dark roasts so far because they're kind of comparable to convenience store coffee. Kinda struggling with window shopping for beans though compared to tea.
I appreciate the kind words and encouragement! V60 is an excellent brewer. Sounds like you have a good setup! The Aeropress Go is pretty handy for travel too. I hope to make a video on it soon.
Can you recommend your favorite tea channel? I would love to learn more and see how they do it.
I haven't even finished watching the video but reading the comments and your interaction with your viewers is fabulous! I look forward to watching this 😸
Edited after watching: I am so very glad I stumbled on this video and channel! 😺 The this answered every question I had about the AeroPress XL! I greatly appreciate your recipe for a tasty brew from this, someday I'll have to get us an XL as my husband and I love AeroPress coffee but hated having to make the same cup twice in a row 😅
Again, I am so glad this video was in my recommended feed as I will be watching your releases from here on!🤩
Truly on point comment. I too look forward to future releases from this channel!
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words!!
@@pletsmakecoffee Thank YOU for your fantastic content! I learn something new each time I watch!
Seem like a good buy if you need that *BIG* cup of coffee
I will stick to a normal aeropress though for portability reasons. My 1zpresso Q2 fits perfectly
Nice! That’s a sweet grinder!!
I'm a die hard fan of the original aeropress. Traveled around the world with it and had given it away to one of my coffee buddies before returning to the US. Saw the XL was out which was amazing because brewing 2x to make coffee for my wife and I or others was a pain...
I gotta say though, I don't love the XL. It's very similar but the flow rate is a little different considering it's a wider mouth and there's more weight from the water pressing down against the filter meaning even with 3 or 4 filters half my water just runs through the filter right away and doesn't steep with the coffee. Inverted is the way to go as a result, but you lose volume in the tube to invert which really makes it so it's barely more volume than what i could brew in the original and not quite enough for 2.
It's still good coffee but i'm considering going back to the original Aeropress until Fellow releases a Prismo XL or someone releases a decent pressure valve to fit the bigger mouth.
I want to love the xl, I really do, but there's something missing.
The paper filters are very reusable. (At least for now.) After use, peal the filter off the puck, wash it, rinse it, use it again.
I wash mine with Doctor Brauner's mint soap to remove the oils and sentiment out of the paper. I follow with a rinse in warm water and then slap it on the side of the AeroPress where it can dry and be easy to find when I want to use it again.
One filter paper can be used for a month doing this.
Impressive mileage out of the filter! I do reuse mine a few times usually but I like your approach. Thanks for watching and joining the discussion!
Thanks for the review! Bought my first Aeropress a few weeks ago and went with the XL. Glad to see that it makes coffee as well as the original. What water temperature do you use with your recipe?
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy the XL! Excellent question, I missed mentioning that: I used water just off a boil, which at my elevation is about 203F or 95C.
I want to try this out for travel but can’t find which insulated mugs would fit the XL. Any suggestions.
The aeropress is best for single cup brew imo. The best market for aeropress would be converting Keurig users. If you are making up to three cups, a French press is a great option, and more than that, just your regular old drip machine, and turn it off after the brew so it doesn't burn.
You had me up to the point where you said the word “French press” - I’ve had a tasting from the Aeropress XL and it’s hands down way better than anything coming out of a French press. (Sorry, just don’t like that particle taste)
@@ruessI get this, and I think there will always be some amount of particles from a French press, but if you grind the beans coarse, and resist the urge to plunge the French press, the coffee sediment is kept to a minimum. I learned this from a James Hoffman video and it works. If you pour the French press in a way that doesn't stir it up, you'll be fine.
@@totoroben I am a recent convert to the Hoffman method for French Press and it does help a lot! Good call. I also did in fact use a large French press to make enough for holiday family visiting. I do like the quality of the Aeropress coffee more but they both have their place for sure. 👍 Thanks for joining the conversation!
@@totoroben Hmm ok well, I'll give that a try and maybe you'll turn me into a convert :)
Thanks for the video. Question (I’m newbie) - I have aero press Go, and when I want to brew more for 2 people, I am using 3 scoops of coffee and making espresso, then adding hot water afterward for Americano. Is there any advantage to using the XL instead for 2 people, taste wise, when comparing the methods?
The adding water method works but there is a huge taste advantage to brewing with the XL. The coffee will not extract the same using a higher coffee to water ratio and diluting. That being said, it’s a bit subjective and some people seem to prefer the taste of adding bypass water so there is no wrong way to do it, but I highly recommend using a larger version if you want to make more at a time. Thanks for joining the conversation!
What's that kettle that you're using? Looks quite nice.
It’s a Bodum model 11883. Basic but very reliable kettle! I like it a lot.
It would be cool if they made and all metal version that wouldn't need a filter, kinda somewhere between a french press screen and a portafilter.
Definitely an interesting idea!
@@pletsmakecoffee rok could easily make something that works like a scaled up version of the piston in their esspresso press.
It’s not really about the brewer. You can get the same cup of coffee out of an aeropress, Chemex, or v60. It’s all about the quality of bean; grind size, water temperature, and brewing technique. Aeropress is great though. I’ve always loved mine. If I’m at home, I use Chemex, if I’m traveling then it’s aeropress.
What's your water temperature?
I don’t get the number of coffee recipes that omit a basic information like the water temperature. Really frustrating for the viewer as I basically wasted 7 minutes of my life and am none the wiser.
What coffee shop is using an Aero plus?? Noooo waaay thats just silly to even think
isn't this how a keurig works? (no I'm not a fan, unless I'm at work because it's free)
Essentially, they both use hot water and pressure to extract the coffee. The Keurig does allow more bypass I believe. Also, the Keurig is much more limited in brewing capacity and coffee choice - unless you use some mods. The taste difference between the two is not comparable. In my opinion the Aeropress is far superior, but that's a bit subjective. Thanks for joining the conversation and I hope that helped.
Have you ever compared AeroPress to Cowboy coffee?
Things you need for cowboy coffee:
A mug with hot water+coffee
You stir it with idk? a stick?
Then you just have the awareness of the grounds at the bottom and you leave the bottom of the mug for the worms.
The one time I tried this I was camping in the cold and it was extremely satisfying.@@pletsmakecoffee
@@danielbrowniel Cowboy coffee can be superior to all other methods provided you have a precise grinder, adequate temperature campfire water, and brew only after rustling some cattle.
When size is not an issue …. Cries as a small guy
😂😭😭
NONI!!!! No inverted method ?? Thats a sin!!
Seeeee my video on the inverted method with the XL!
Yeah you lost me at the print wears off.. I still stuck around for the video.
Thanks for watching!
@@pletsmakecoffee welcome. Il watch your videos if they pop up on my feed lol.
This is kinda funny because the original aeropress is designed for up to 4 cups of coffee IF the directions are followed correctly.
Seems like they only made THIS model for the folks who don't.
I really don’t like how the coffee tastes when brewed with the official, original Aeropress instructions. If you followed the same logic however the XL is more than twice the physical volume so you could brew more with it either way.
There should be no "it" in the thumpnail
Wow how did I miss that… thank you
Fixed, I’m embarrassed how long that was like that haha. Thanks again.
Plastic, plastic and more plastic. This thing is worth pennies.
Btw, it seems obligatory to also use a plastic kettle to ensure you get a proper dose of your daily microplastics.
There is a bit too much plastic out there I have to agree with you.
The plastic is food safe. And it’s not single use. I guess it could be stainless, but makes it heavier for travel, but also it would have to be preheated or it would absorb the heat and lower the water temp. I think it’s fine the way it is.
