Wow Mike, that was some crazy wood! All it made was dust and no shavings, but you persevered. It's for this kind of difficult wood where carbide tools appear to save the day. Good job! Thanks for an informative video. I may try this for my wife, but with different wood! :)

Wow this was a tuff turn. Thanks for showing us some solutions for soft turning. Good Looking project. Thanks

Thank you Mike. Excellent idea and video. My granddaughters, ages 6 and 4, would love them for their upcoming birthdays. God bless you and yours and Merry Christmas.

WOW, Very challenging piece of wood. I dont know of any better way than the Hunter tools. I have used the Hunter number four on a steep slicing angle for tough spots like that. Thanks for the Jamieson tool mention. Merry Christmas

Thanks, Lyle. The wood was not really suited to such an end grain oriented project. It should be lovely on a regular box. It wasn't really punky. Just subject to massive tearout. It was soft enough to sand fairly well.

This project has some challenges but a workshop of 7 folks all turned one. Although some still needed a bit of work at the end of the workshop that was going to be finished at home.

Great jewelry box, it is nice to see a video that isn’t using acrylic to fix wood that is a “little punky”.

Oh, I did forget to use my stabilizing vacuum system, didn't I? Probably would have taken $20 of stabilizing resin.

Nice turn, Mike. I think I will add it to my box challenge list for giving it a try later this year. But perhaps I will use some maple that is a little less ripe!😁🤪

Great tip on getting rid of the bump in the middle. Mike, the video goes black at 18:37 to 19:15 right after you talk about putting a piece of scrap wood in.

X$%&!! I refrenced a video clip that was no longer where it should have been. I will redo and reload. Thanks for catching!

UA-cam has a somewhat crude on line editor that you can snip out a section. This was easier to delete the bad section than fixing the video and uploading as I would lose any comments and confuse folks. The missing 30 seconds was a brief show of adding a recess for a textured ebony disk I had on hand.

Check back in a few hours. It is being fixed. Or rewatch the end and ignore the blank screen for about 30 seconds until I come back on.

Very well done. Too bad the wood was so punky that you got so much tear-out. Sanding away the tear-out produced a good result for this project, but it prevented you from adding any crisp details to the piece (had you wanted to). This might have been a good opportunity to use stabilizing resin. Once you'd roughed-out the three pieces, you could have put each piece into your vacuum chamber for a nice soak. (Roughing the pieces before stabilizing saves resin and ensures better penetration.)

You are right, David, this would have been a good candidate for stabilizing. I was too focused on my self appointed deadline of a video on Friday. Maybe I need to back off of that. I turned a couple of simple boxes just for the fun of it since this video. I am finding I have too little time for "me turning" that is not focused on a video. Maybe I am hitting a wall. But then I do like making videos. Thanks for your continued support.

Mike -- There was absolutely nothing wrong with the video. I enjoyed it and learned from it. Because the wood was punky, you were able to demonstrate some of the 'tricks' experienced turners use to get an acceptable 'finish cut' when turning difficult wood.
In this case, the wood was too far gone to get the result you wanted -- even with these tricks. At that point, most of use would do what you did, break-out the 80-grit gouge. As you demonstrated, 'sanding' isn't an admission of failure! It can be an effective strategy. You ended up with a finished project many would be happy to receive as a gift.
But, as I tried to suggest, another effective strategy might be stabilizing the wood before finish turning the project. This approach takes more time and is a bit more expensive (a lot more expensive if you don't already have the equipment). The advantage is the stabilized wood will allow you greater freedom in the final design. It will allow you to create fine details that sanding through tear-out will not permit.
It might be interesting to do a follow up video (maybe not making the same project),
showing the advantages and disadvantages of using stabilization in such a case. However, please do NOT feel obligated to make such a video! Your many fans are grateful for whatever your time and desire permit you to post. Also, don't feel obligated to keep posting new videos twice a week. I'll be disappointed whenever you don't. But, we'd all be far more disappointed if you were to stop making videos altogether.

I love the jewelry box, but the screen went black at the end and I didn't get to see how it came out. :(

Sorry it disappointed you. Most beginners would not have been happy if I just said "Ok, doing the bottom is a bit like doing the middle and you can figure out how to do the top so I will just skip all of that." It is always a challenge to edit a project with the variety of skills of the viewers. I felt like this was a pretty challenging project for a beginner who needed to see the complete sequence. Maybe you were not the target audience. Maybe the next video I do will be more to your liking. Merry Christmas!
