My Best Ever? - Wood Turning

  • A very difficult turn of Cherry Plum but worth all the effort. This piece is just beautiful and I consider it at least one of my best woodturning pieces. It's a Live Edge End-Grain turning with lots of natural features left in. There was a little lathe accident with the piece flying off but easily replaced without any damage.

I love your work. I started turning 3 years ago at age 68 and I truly love it. I learned everything I know from watching you, Rob Humphrey, Al Furtardo, and Doug at pohlbarn and many others on utube. Thanks for sharing your work.

If I had been turning this piece I would have gone for a shape that I could leave the sides with the bark on it and just turned a bowl in the top, because I loved the way the outside looked, which would have been a shame because I wouldn't have gotten the gorgeous piece that you got. It's absolutely amazing how that turned out 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 a solid 15/10.

When your Cherry Plum let go I had a flashback to my days operating a Warner/Swasey 2A! I worked on pre-machined pieces as well as bar stock, but EVERYTHING was metal!....& unlike wood, it's UNFORGIVING to your body & life when a tool hits porosity in the casting(s)!
Having shared my meaningless bits of personal minutia, your Cherry Plum bowl is NOTHING short of absolutely spectacular, Phil! To my jaundiced eye, it resembles a massive wooden flower fully opened to the sun......the likes of which one would perhaps expect to see in some surrealistic painting.

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop It came from a mansion designed by Sir Christopher Wrenn, destroyed by fire in 1949. My school was built in the grounds after that. I enjoyed turning my bowl, and I wish now I had done a lot more turning. I ran our sawmill for a while, and Dad had many species of hardwood in our yard. I've always appreciated the beauty of wood grain and the colours and scents: red cedar in particular.
