Yeah, Gladiator's are fun to play(especially since they use Contact Fusion MUCH better than Neo-Spacians ever did) but I'll personally always prefer my Invincible Fortress Rock deck...
glad beasts will always be one of my favorite archetypes and my greatest regret is selling my max rarity collection of them and getting low rarity versions, cuz damn I miss them.
These videos bring me back to when I had THE most fun in the game. 2006-2008 for me where the premier years for YGO with everything prior being extremely good alert and followed by formats that were also enjoyable but not like ‘06-‘08. Everything about that time was so cool. The card designs, the exploration of new types of cards that hadn’t been seen before, new strategies, etc. if I could I would revert modern YGO to those days and have zero regrets doing it
Spellbook of Judgment HAS to be in this series, because it being around was the only reason Dragon Rulers weren't the dominant force, and the second it went away, that's exactly what happened.
You could say the same the other way. I'd do a video on both of those decks, as it was the first time there were two Tier 0 caliber decks at the same time.
Been too long since we got a lore or new card review vids from you my boi. Glad to see you back with the chill music and informative vid. Hope life been alright for ya during the absence
I was a Gald Beast early adopter, so was able to get my cards cheap, sure my Heraklinos was slightly damage but it was still tournament legal. I rode that wave as long as I could. There came a time when I started maining side deck cards like the impris mirrors for regionals, but at some point that’s topped working and is topped topping. I miss the Glad Beast glory days.
I loved playing glad back then. Had the whole deck including a heraklinos I got from a mate as well as e hero prisma's and the deck was fun and refreshing compared to the other decks of the time.
would love for u to continue on this series. i only recently got serious abt yugi with master duel release, last time i had played it was as a kid, so i basically missed every format prior to this one. yugi history is interesting
Great recap of my favorite archtype. I didnt expect to see my picture in the recap, very cool! I remember seeing Levitans top and actually bought a Herk off of him between minnesota and st. louis before gyzarrus release. Just re-discovered your channel and you do great work!
Thank you for making this Capital G, Glads were my most anticipated video. They carried me undefeated in nats swiss, til I lost to Lazaro in the mirror of top 8. My favorite deck of all time
I think it's kinda ironic how the first real hit to Gladiator Beasts came in March 2009 after Tele-DAD's dominance with putting Bestiari to 1. Yet for majority of the format, it basically fizzled out. I wonder why this is?
Surprisingly little mention of cold wave, despite that being the card that unilaterally boosted the archetype to tier 0 rather than tier 1. There were several archetypes at the time whose power level was on par with that of glad beasts, however they all relied on spell/trap cards to some degree, whereas glad beasts didn't (1 searcher isn't being particularly reliant on them).
TCG: I’ll try it your way for once Overdose: you know what that mop head hunter’s iconic phrase Dad and the meta: don’t do it Overdose and tcg players: jackpot
Great vid cap!, it was my fav deck. You forgot to add that also while Tele-Dad really pushed out the deck in terms of being the king of the format, the thing that absolutely sealed the deal was that Konami on the March 2009 banlist limited Bestiari meaning that a single Bottomless, D.D. Crow or Dimensional Prison hit on Bestiari means instant GG since you are now locked out of making Gyzarus for the rest of that game (and also renders all your remaining Prisma's useless making them bricks). And that was the last nail in the coffin that really pushed out the deck of being a tier 1/1.5 contender to tier 2 or 3 for the rest of the game's history. But even after that I really sticked with the deck for a long time since still was my favourite. And I added the infamous Rescue Cat play into x2 Samnites (for tag out plays) x1 Airbellum's (for synchro plays).
I play this archetype in duel links. It's always funny when you face a blue eyes deck and destroys his face down " the white stone of ancients" and he's like: "Ha ha ha in the end phase I'll a summon a powerful blue eyes you're screwed" me: "I activate my GB's effect to summon another GB from my deck. I summon retiari to banish your stone from the GY" Opponent: * rage quits * But for real yeah I remember in old games like gx tag force 2 this archetype was DEADLY. Especially gyzarus. The strong point of this deck (imo) is it's incredible versatility. and at that time having an archetype where almost 100% of monsters could research and summon almost any other monster from the same archetype from your deck was quite incredible.
Slight Correction. Glad Beast are in Tag Force 3. Not Tag Force 2. Tag Force 2 card pool stops at Tactical Evolution. Tag Force 3 card pool stops at Crossroads of Chaos. Very Early Synchro era
Awesome vid, I remember glad beasts vividly, first meta deck I played, I had most of the cards and my brother helped me put it together and it helped me win at a locals for a few weeks, prior I always lost, was pretty exciting at the time and nostalgic to look back on xD
1:41 Don't forget about the infamous error where the cover card of Gladiator's Assault had the wrong name printed (Never forget ITS NAME IS RAINBOW DRAGON)
Gladiator Beasts have to be up there in my top 2 favorite decks! I enjoyed all the details and work you put into this researching Glads rise to fame as I'm sure seeing even old photos of old champs brings back some version of nostalgia of how sweet the game was then...(minus the outrageous prices for Herk, D.A.D. & crush card 😅)... Imagine...the players just discovering glads then seeing what they could do nowadays, recycling gb comeback 😁 very fun casual deck to play still and VERY much a toolbox deck! So many neat interactions!
Interesting that this video pops up on my feed right as we get a banlist that's in all likelyhood going to give us another tier 0 format with the ishizu tearelements deck.
Man I really enjoy listening to you tell these tales. I enjoy it so much I must risk advice: There were times in this video where the background music kinda drowns you out. I mean I can make out what you are saying but the music is just loud enough to be distracting. Its a great choice in music too, btw.
Versatility for sure, consistency not so much There's like 4 bricks and a full garnet among the cards, and "if you can battle" is doing a lot of work cus if your opponent does as much as normal summon Stratos (or any other 1800+ monster) you're not getting through there without using a battle trick
Brings me back. I somehow had a Gladiator Beast Heraklinos. I was one of very few locally who had one when the card exploded in price. I won many many tournament with gladiators and they are my favorite deck I played of all time.
I’m so excited after hearing that this is a new series and not just one video!! Yessss I love your content and always look forward to your Yugioh history content
Hey man, love your content and this new series has nothing but ups coming I'm sure! Small recommendation, or request. Could you turn the music portion down a couple tads? Thought it was clashing with your voice instead of being background. Either way, nice video and description!
Fun fact at sjc Costa Mesa Paul legit a played GBs. Everyone there from team overdose including Adam corn all laughed at the deck but everytime seeing Paul’s boards he was dropping the heraclinos. Also side note I think Costa Mesa format was very under explored because everyone went for DAD and otk style with DMOC. Gemini decks were close of topping that event. Buddy bubbled with gigaplant. Also Team overdose would be an amazing series. So cal emon and Adam really ran the ygo card market in so cal back then. Also how shady the team was known for
Ahhh, Gladiator Beasts....the first archetype deck I ever used and still one of my favorite archetypes of all time. Which is weird for me to say as I normal gravitate towards sci-fi designs
I remember that time when Heraklinos spiked. I had pulled one from either a box or a pack and no one gave it a second look. Then suddenly, everyone wanted the copy I had. I still have it as I quickly learned how much it was worth and never traded it. Also reminds me of my 6 Zaborgs back in the AST days. I kept pulling those things and no one wanted them. Adam Corn wins a SJC with Monarchs and viola! I went from 6 to 1 in about 2 weekends of trades.
It's crazy to think that Levitin won a ycs b4 the game warping Gyzarus, such a madman. Thank you for making this video, this is the only deck I was able to win locals, and I was a newbie without Heraklinos and with only 1 prisma and 1 solemn lol
I remember the first time I played vs glads, the guy thought the tag came after the damage step rather than battle phase so he kept tagging and restacking.
didnt "we" agree that tier 0 means over 60% of top cuts, but I am looking forward to this - many quality decks did exist that did not make that margin, and these upper tier 1 decks - need some "love" too. Gladiator Beasts are a great start - cant wait for more
Second comment cause why not. I remember when I first started playing on DN I loved GBs. Chariot was a great trap in that era, and running Waboku in a deck just made me happy. Such an iconic card for me from kitchen table games.
I have to admit seeing discarded decks, characters, weapons what have you in variety of games to win something is great. If something is poorly understood because it's deemed bad it might catch people off guard and bring a satisfying underdog victory
Bruh watching this video gave me so many early 2000s vibes i miss the days before youtube where people actually had to build decks and not everyone had the knowledge of a good decklist those days definately seperated the good players from the bad.
Though I didn't know much about them I really liked the archtype and I'm glad Ik their epic history now... it's weird cause I chose my favorite 2 archtypes (salamangreat and glads) and I later found both were insane top meta decks o.O

Yeah, Gladiator's are fun to play(especially since they use Contact Fusion MUCH better than Neo-Spacians ever did) but I'll personally always prefer my Invincible Fortress Rock deck...

So did you keep one card max at least me I kept the bestiary super and today I found some packs tournament packs and pulled a 2 laquari supers

its not tier 0 tho. It shares the meta of it's time with another archtype which could also be tier 0 but was stopped by spellbooks.
Yh what Lucy said. Spell book was always tier 1 at best. It never had a complete and sole dominance over a meta. It just checked the other tier 1 deck
imagine having the spellbook makes the dragon Rulers out of the radar
hey evilswarms helped with the D rulers too...
You could say the same the other way. I'd do a video on both of those decks, as it was the first time there were two Tier 0 caliber decks at the same time.

Can't wait for dragon rulers and spellbooks to be covered in this series, love your videos capg :)
And the weird older cards that saw play because of certain things (Vaskii because of Dracossack being an example)
Favorite format. So "Glad" it existed.

Gladiators really had a unique style. Wish they were better today 🤷🏻
Gladiator beast has an almost unparraled consistency and versatility. After all if you can battle then you can get any Glad that you need.

Just got into yugioh thanks to master duel. Long time magic player. I naturally gravitated towards gladiator beast archtype. Ofc this is its history.
Maybe if players know that they can boost predaplants with lair of darkness nearly 20 fold, then maybe predaplants could be tier 1
