Making of a UTA Promo Video!

- In this video, I show the process of making an Undertone Audio promo video. I had to setup a multi-amp guitar sound, record it, mix it, and put it all together into an exciting 1 minute video. If you want to check out the final thing you can go to the UTA UA-cam channel here • GB Satellite - See wha...
As always, great video Eric thank you for sharing this with us! When is the UTA version of the RCA console coming out?🤔
Eric - put the link to your undertone channel in the description of this video. The QR code makes a bit of a chicken and egg problem for anyone who watches your videos on a phone (which I would wager is a large segment). I had to borrow my wife’s phone to scan the QR code and then text it to mine to get to the link (after trying to search for it in the UA-cam algorithms and coming up short). Finally made it to the undertone channel, but would have been way more straightforward to just add link in video description and I bet it will drive some much needed traffic to that channel.
Also - seems there’s another old undertone channel with content from 3 years ago that was the only one I could find through UA-cam search.
Anyway- love this channel and look forward to every new video. Thank you again for sharing your mastery!
Hey! Thank you for letting me know. I added the link in the description. I figure out this internet thing eventually haha!!
This is probably the best A/B tape machine comparison I've heard!
Wow! That tone off the tape is really amazing! Great to see all your hard work coming together. Great video!!
Night and day difference between tape and just digital 👍 Waaay fatter and more depth....Sounds like Rock!!😊👍
Super cool. Loved all the individual mics on the amps too, like super focused, but all the amp setups sounded great. And neat to see it go from that to totally pro.
We have a spaghetti western voice over actor at home!
The vo actor at home:
😂
Scullys really are the best tape machines ever made :) When you own one you know… My scullys make my ampex machines sound like protools 😂
Hi Eric! Auto-Align 2 doesn't only shift phase relationship with timing, it does frequency-dependent phase adjustment as well. Those green/multicolour bars next to the millisecond value are a (not very clear) visual representation of that.
By the way, if the alignment isn't perfect, you can right-click one of the mics and set a different timing offset. Works well for room mics.
Cool! Thank you for the details on Aut Align 2. I am still getting to know it and this is super helpful. The one thing I couldn't figure out was if there's a way to get it to redo its 30 sec anylization of the source material. I ended up having to reinstance the plugs to get it to do that. There must be a way though, yes?
@@UndertoneAudio-nx1dh In the bottom-left corner under 'settings' you can click 'clear existing capture'
(by the way, did I just teach Eric Valentine something?! Awesome.)
@@UndertoneAudio-nx1dhyes you can definitely redo the auto align, I use Auto Align 2 on every session!!! I can’t live without it now because even when I check all phase for my mics this plugin still makes everything sound better so make sure to click where it says settings on the bottom left and clear the analysis. Cheers!
ATCs keeping the Helmholz pipe in place one week, RCA valve mixer holding up tube traps the next...!
So wicked. Loving that this place has all the things you need! Feeling the Joy EV! And also I wish I had a Tape Machine! Damn.
The Studio is perfect! Don't change a thing!
Great Video Eric
such a great look with the mess behind u, the flopping hair, and the blue reflection off the screen looking like bags under ur eyes 😂 i can see youve been hard at work!
This is great! I own the GB tracker, now I think I need a satellite
Great video. When will the UA 500 series eqs be available?
November 27th!
Thanks so much Eric for sharing this all!
Which bock mic is on the cabinet?
living legend good god
More MIDRANGE
Glad you're having fun with your new studio.
Curious if you ever use the preamps in that Scully?
I've got a pair of those modules (or at least what I assume that machine is.....280 maybe? can't recall ATM), and they're STUPID high gain, but kinda cool for certain things.
…and I was already buying the GB…😁…and then the VOICE happened 👌…and there, in the cart, satellites appeared 🤗
Holy cow, that tape machine does more difference on rock guitars than tape rarely even does on drums!
Are those “drapes” in the big room from your Barefoot studio?
Those are new drapes! The big room is really close to being done :)
@tone-talk you guys should get in touch! A conversation between Eric and Dave Friedman would be great!
BADASS VIDEO BUDDY! CHEERS FROM VENEZUELA! 👏🏻🤓
✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻🎸🔥
Wish I had your ears, those guitars sound frickin amazeballs
Wow man, I’ve never heard the difference so naked like that. You cannot beat tape 👌🏾
Breakdown of 'All my Ghosts' would be dope!! Thanks for all you do.🙏
insane detail to epic guitar tone! The before and after from digital through tape was golden!
thank god the beautiful tubes can still be seen dont listen to Grace they look great!
The most expensive signal chain in voice over history 🤤
You and Grace's masterpiece!
Yess! Glad to get another video 🤘
What do you think of the Heritage Audio Grandchild 670?
It looks pretty damn cool. I haven't heard it so all I can do is look at the specs and there a couple things that stray from the what an Original Fairchild does. The Grandchild is spec'ing 20-20K +/-.5db. An original Fairchild is more like +/- 1 dB. It rolls off pretty significantly in the extreme highs and lows. It's part of the Fairchild sound. Who knows, a flatter freq response might be better for some things. Grandchild is saying less than .5% Harm Dist up to +24dB. The original Fairchild is more like 1% at +18dB but again, who knows, maybe it sounds better for some things being cleaner.
In the advertising they do say it is "unprecedented" and "was impossible". I would think IGS and WesAudio might disagree with that haha! But its all good. That's just advertising hyperbole. Totally forgivable. I would say that the Grandchild would have to sound WAY WAY better than the other two options to justify the higher price and lack of features. Tubecore and RHEA both have variable attack and release controls (obviously, my preference) and RHEA is actually a stereo unit with digital control/recallability. Heritage has got some real competition on this one :)
Incredible signal chain for recording guitars man... What is the exact name for the Bock microphone please? ✌🏼
Unfortunately, those were a one off. They have his elliptical 5 zero 7 capsules in them but FET electronics like a 47fet. He never went to market with them.
@@UndertoneAudio-nx1dh Interesting. Thanks for the information ✌🏼
Simple isn't it.
Watching and hearing Eric do an old radio voice made my fucking day haha 😂 love it!
Eric I have always did fun voices most of my life but when I had my daughter, I got to put those to good use and do much more so I know what you mean haha! 😊
The ending😂❤
As a complete noob when it comes to guitar recording, what's the db level in the studio with the cabinets? I understand LOUD is the goal? Is that because the amps and cabinets react at it's best when driving them really loud? Is this true even when recording clean with no overdrive/distortion?
Not Eric, but I personally just record them at a level where I'm getting the response from the cabinet that I want. Usually that's at quite a low volume. There's no need to go louder if you're getting the sound you want from the cab. Also, I'd suggest it's better to record quieter rather than louder for three reasons:
1) Less room interaction. Many people are recording in less-than-ideal rooms, so quieter means more of the amp and less of the room in general.
2) You don't risk distorting/overloading the microphones. (And also have good headroom on your pres.)
3) Save your ears. This is an important one. So many guitarists crank their amps with no thought about hearing loss, and, frankly, I think they are idiots.
@@samsepiol7191 All good points, but I'd also add that a lot of this isn't necessarily about people wanting things loud for the sake of being loud i.e. some people, because of the particular amps they're working with and the particular tones/sounds they desire from those amps, simply don't have a choice.
Mainly because a lot of amps, especially the ones that don't have a master volume, absolutely require you to crank them up in order to achieve these particular sounds/tones i.e. high gain.
And yes, the downside is of course, it being punishingly loud, which depending on what kind of studio setup you're working in, may not at all be practical or doable for a lot of people, hence so many people these days using other alternatives i.e. amp/cab sims, etc.. in the box, due to not having iso rooms/booths to crank amps.
Which is precisely my problem and has led me to having to go the UA OX box top route, which is really amazing technology for what it is and does the job, for the most part, but obviously, there's no real substitute for amps being played through actual speakers and moving air like that. ugh.. oh well, I guess we can't have it all.. haha.
But yes, IF one is actually getting their desired tone/sound from an amp at a lower volume, then yes, there'd be no need to crank said amp. I certainly wish that were the case with my setup and rigs, life would be much easier, that's for sure.. Peace.. DC
@@samsepiol7191 Many thanks! Very helpful.
@@fatbackfunk Great, thanks for the input. My only experience (long time ago) with a recording engineer was cranking the amp to maximum but using a booth. Would just not have been possible to be in the same room.
@fatbackfunk For sure. Hence why I wrote as quiet as it needs to be to get the tone you want .... But, yes, some amps require so much volume if you want the tubes to sing, for example! Musicians' earplugs are my #1 recommended piece of equipment for any musician or audio engineer. I've owned mine for over a decade and they've been seriously priceless.
I haven't tried amp sims and such yet, aside from plugins. But I'm getting more and more intrigued by some pedal offerings and all that. I know that for live performances, amp sims are becoming a big thing because they're just plug-and-play and so easy to keep tame for the engineer.
I've personally been obsessed with smaller amps in the studio lately. I'd love to acquire a Fender Champ, for instance.
I call that Reamping...lol
looking forward to this video! maybe a mistake though, to have only 360p ?
You were so fast, HD hadn't processed yet! Haha
@@caleykelly Oh well, I'm glad it's all good! Heavy nerding over here :)
@@Journeymanlive I love Eric's videos. I always watch them in multiple sittings and , often, multiple times. There's so much information to absorb: the guy's an encyclopedia!
In the digital vs. tape comparison: are the levels between the mics the same before and after? With the bit where one channel was a bit hot I got the impression that you are changing the levels between all mics. So I'm not a 100% convinced that the difference in sound is solely due to digital vs. tape.
Still sounds awesome!
The maniac EV selling his products again 12:16 😂
