"Kai Tracid (born as Kai Frans on 17 January, 1972 in Frankfurt, Germany) is a former trance DJ and producer. The name Tracid originates from the combination of the two music genres trance and acid. In 2009 Kai stopped making music and co-founded a yoga centre.”

Producing his first track in 1995, Kai Tracid has always been an artist that I have admired, ever since I first started listening to his music. At first I adored his energy, his acid riffs and his powerful baselines, but as I grew older, the lyrics started to amaze me even more. With lyrics about drug abuse, freedom, bullying and suicide, about becoming aware of your own self, the reason you exist, and about living life to the fullest, his music stood out in my mind.
“I set high value on ambitious lyrics”, Kai once said, which is a very uncommon statement, especially in the music these days. With these lyrics, he has touched people from all over the world. Even today these tracks mean a lot to me, as well as to many of my friends.
But how personal were the lyrics? Find out how much the lyrics have meant to Kai, what kind of message he wanted to convey to his listeners. Also find out how he then finally started to live up to the lyrics himself.
Hear Kai tell me about the story of how it took one year for his first single ’Your Own Reality’ to be picked up by DJs around the world, and how important it is to believe in yourself, but also to keep your feet on the ground and to always be yourself.

"Things happen to your life, and you have two ways what you can do:
you can say ok this is really bad for me, and I don’t like it, and you will destroy yourself because of this. Or you can say to yourself, ok this happened for a reason, or these people act like this for a reason, and you don’t know why. Maybe they don’t want to hurt you, but they have to do it..
So I learned to be more neutral to stuff that happens to you. You don’t say that its a bad thing, or its a positive thing, I just learned to be more neutral towards things that happen."
Who were Kai’s heroes when he started to produce and who are his heroes today?
Kai's track ’Conscious’ has always intrigued me, it was his last big single, but what has always baffled me was if there was a good-bye in those lyrics?
"I left my life, my physical form of life behind.
I realize my blunted and senseless way of life.
I should have lived my life, much more conscious.”

"When I changed my record company they thought they had bought the new ATB, and that I will make them more radio hits. So I said, I'm sorry... I am not ATB, I am Kai Tracid, and I want to make Kai Tracid music. It will be different than ATB.
So they kicked me out of the contract."

Kai Tracid and his music means a lot to me, and meeting him at Technoclub for our second interview only made that feeling stronger. He is the true meaning of a legend, and he has this calm aurora around him. But on stage, he is full of energy.

I really liked the interview. The interviewer seemed to be very very well prepared. Probably listened to most if Kai's tracks and also had some background check on Kai as well so yeah, I think he did a great job keeping Kai busy with interesting questions!
Kai seems to have a very nice philosophy and I wouldn't be surprised if he was some sort of Bhuddist or at least going towards that direction.
What he said about 20:43 was actually very sad. Yoga CDs selling even better than old style Trance CDs nowadays. So I guess you have to go commercial like Arm$n Van Buuren in order to sell well.
Same thing with 21:53, it's hard to make a comeback when the new crowd are not into the old style Trance anymore.
But I respect Kai for being himself and not want to change just in order to collect those big stash money. It's better to follow your heart, do what YOU prefer to do.
I'd bet even Tiesto and Armin themselves also inside miss the old Trance but ofc, they would never openly admit it in front of the public.
