When I was in High School, my grandmother bought me a black leather bag from Target; my schoolmates always asked me about my "Coach" bag (apparently it was a dupe for the old Penny crossbody bags). I hadn't even heard of Coach until then, but now I have 2 bags and a wallet from them. That old Target bag was VERY well made though, and lasted me quite a long time.
In the 8Os, I bought a beautiful black leather bag with gun metal trim from JC Penney. Back then the quality was like this coach bag. I wish I kept it!
This was the first of 3 coach bags I owned. I think the original sale price was around $110.00 back in about 1972 or 1973. I later purchased 2 more coach bags and absolutely loved them. These were my first purchases of expensive bags. I’ve continued to purchase good quality bags because they really hold up to the wear and tear of everyday use. Beautiful job of restoration.
That was during the time when they were guaranteed. You could bring them to the store to get cleaned and new hardware was often replaced by new. I wish they still had the same policy, they really were built to last a lifetime. I probably have every leather (100%leather, no cloth) bad they made in brown and black.. Loved them and still do to this day.
Great job restoring this classic shoulder bag. The point is to restore the bag, not necessarily make it look brand new. My late father was in the US Cavalry at the start of WWII and would tell me how they would care for the saddles - a bit of wear only makes it look better - he would say. He always took time out to preserve all of our leather goods growing up and I continue this practice today. I have Coach and Lara bags that are 40 years old and still look great - not showroom perfect, but I wouldn't trade them for all the $500 bags in the world. Kudos 😊
I found a vintage coach a few weeks ago. These things wear like iron. I like the vintage better because there are no markings on that that say coach. Don’t like labels!
Yes, the new Coach bags are a bit flashy. I suppose the company is trying to appeal to the younger buyer's. They like flashy stuff that screams the manufacturers name from a block away.

I bought that exact bag in black for $50 I had it restored and couldn’t be happier. I had that bag in the 90’s and my mom had it. She passed away and I desperately wanted that bag for nothing other than sentimental value. I’m so happy I tracked one down.
I have that exact Coach bag, same color and size and shape. Got it at a thrift store for $4...thirty years ago. Mine isn't quite that bad, but now I'm motivated to clean it up and use it again. Thanks.
This reminded me of when I was a kid. We all wore leather shoes and my job on Saturday evening was to polish our shoes for Sunday church. Put on the cream polish, rub it around and then buff it with a soft brush. Nice and shiny for Sunday wearing.
This speaks volumes about the quality of this vintage leather, craftsmanship only comparable to Hermes in my opinion. In spite of the poor shape of the bag, the hardware remains in perfect condition. Lyssa- the one thing I'd like to see if possible would be for you to explain the restoration process and provide links to the products you use. Otherwise, great job. TFS
The same process you use for saddles and the tack for horses. Take measurements before you wash it. There are many books on the subject. She skipped a step for conditioning the leather. Otherwise it becomes dry & brittle. Perhaps product was added to the rinse water?
I really enjoyed how serene and quiet this video was :) I thrifted a really big leather backpack recently that's in rough shape and wanted to make sure I don't mess it up trying to clean it!! So relaxing and helpful
Just stumbled upon your channel and this video. Wow, super job you did, on a beautiful purse that needed some TLC! I was petrified, to tell you the truth, when you soaked the bag in the Dawn and water solution! I never even did this for my English horse bridles, and they could get so gungy......so you are super brave! I use a German saddle soap and then a leather conditioner for my vintage Coach purse, and it works, just like it does on my saddles, bridles and girths. But you truly did a great job on that purse and it will last many more decades.
I use saddle soap to clean leather. I like the brush work, it spares produce. To finish it off I use a more oily leather wax for protection, but that will make it shine for a while. I use a cloth to put on the leather conditioner but I like how you do it so gently and sparsely. I do think it is a waste to not keep a good leather bag - or shoes and coats for that matter - in a good state. Thankfully there is still hope for neglected leather products. Love the result!
I have cleaned many saddles and tack in my day. I love to see good leather brought back to life. It is a very satisfying chore…now, enjoy using that beautiful bag.
@@just.j5302 If your purse is dropped in the sea, a pond, a swimming pool, or something really icky. Don't be afraid to rinse it well, use your good hair shampoo & rinse that out too. Dry it well, saddle soap, some leather conditioner & you're good to go, it's like new. I really enjoyed watching your craft of restoring a vintage leather Coach bag. I could not hardly believe it was the same purse by the time you were finished. Such a talent!
I recently pulled out an old Agner bag from the late 80's that's been hanging in a coat closet. It's in excellent condition. Almost like new. And it's the same style as that coach bag. My one weakness. Designer bags. Mink oil does wonders on old or new leather.

But after seeing the results of your work touching up a well worn vintage coach bag and the amazing results you ended up getting. I will use my bag more often, knowing I can restore it to almost perfect condition. Well done!

Oh I love those vintage bags! What a wonderful job you did restoring this beautiful bag back to life. It will be a prized possession again for years. Well done👏🏻👏🏻
Nice job. It’s fortunate you had no structural issues with which to deal. Quality materials and construction techniques will generally prevail. Beautiful bag. Coach has been an inspiration to me for my crafting for a long time. May you have many more years of satisfaction with your wonderful bag. The finished product is outstanding.
Hello there, I just found your channel. I have this exact bag. After seeing your video now I want to use it again! I need to moisturize mine because it has been stored inside of its dust bag. You did an amazing job bringing it back to life. I like how it looks kinda antiqued.
Is was so gratifying to see this restoration. I still have my old John Romaine shoulder bag from 1966. It is a very similar style. I took very good care of it since I saved money to buy it for myself when I was in seventh grade. It still looks great. Maybe I will start using it again. 👍
WOW! Who would have thought that bag would ever look like that again? You did an over-the-top outrageous job on this restoration. I wish you well. Stay encouraged.
You weren't alone. 😳😲My mouth dropped when she submerged that bag! I couldn't believe it so I had to watch again. That goes against everything I've learned over the years about taking care of leather.😵😖
I’ve done this! It’s scary the first time (well, every time), but these bags were originally described as “glove leather.” I always thought that meant thin leather like fine ladies’ gloves, so it didn’t make sense to me. Turns out, the original owner of Coach was a baseball fan. “Glove leather” means *baseball* glove leather. They’re definitely worth restoring. If I’d seen this bag for sale I would’ve jumped on it! What a great project!

Wow. Im quite shocked how good that cleaned up. I've always said you get what you pay for. Coach Is a good brand and good leather. You have to take care of a purse like that. Keep it waxed so the leather stays supple. Great job.
I restored a black Coach bag like this one. Bought at a thrift store. I did use a sweater shaver on the inside and it worked great. I used black shoe dye and mink oil on the outside of the purse. I had to restore my hardware too. Turned out beautifully! I wish I would have seen your video before hand. I didn't know you could completely submerge leather in water! I have this bag in a dark olive green! I inherited 3 original Coach bags and have recently thought about dropping them off to be cleaned and conditioned. This really made my day! 🤗

I have a vintage Coach bag but need to replace the shoulder strap and can’t find it. I saw the same bag at a thrift shop for $20 and a different thrift shop for $5, I regret not buying them
Thank you for this instruction! My husband gave me a Prada bag for my birthday. After two years it's loosing its shape. I hesitated to try this without expert advice. Now I feel confident in caring for this beauty! 💗
I love these, so many people can't understand bringing these items back to attractive again while still useful. 😊 Amazing how much dirt comes away when cleaned. 😏 I had a bag I did that, 3 times in fact and wish then I had a video like this showing the process - vs I winged it. (A lot of apprehension I'd wreck it. It was easy to do, turned out great and each time the paint lasted almost as long as the original surface withstood abuse. You have encouraged me to have a go at a wallet I have been unable to replace. Thank you for another fine video ❣️
I have that very handbag. I also about 10 years ago, came across to Coach handbags at Goodwill. Bought both of them, paid $10 for two. So even if they're not an excellent shape, it's leather and you can fix the problems. Besides a little patina, is good.
This is my first (but not the last) purchase of a D U P B A G Y bag. For the affordable price, it exceeded my expectations! It's soft, the perfect size, and the color is gorgeous! Love this bag!
I have vintage Coach leathers too. They are going to my daughter / granddaughter after I go. 😁 After scrounging around online for the styles I did not purchase. Some are great vintage shape and plenty not. Some observations, others might contribute and comment, please ! Coach leathers are vulnerable to wear on the metals, edges of wear, obvious. Clean up the spills asap. Clean, preserve leather often, don’t over weight the bag. For heaven’s sake, keep it off the bathroom stall floor(!) and restaurant floors, under table. Each bag you have has a history & memories, cherish them all. Save the Coach for the relatives you love (!) and one more anecdote: I was walking past a outlet Coach store. A make Retail worker opened the door as I walked by and said, “I saw your bag! It’s awesome and vintage. I love it!” I said - I know. And thank you! P.s. thank you for video.
I used to have this exact bag. Wish I still had it, but wherever it is now, I hope it has been well cared for. It was wonderful seeing your work. Thank you.
My grandmother got me started repairing and reusing everything I could over 70 years ago. We would take worn out pants and make shorts. The usual things but she also taught me to look at how things are made so when you take them apart you know how to replace them and in what order. Whether it be simple mechanical repairs, rewiring lamps or replacing faucets to save a few pennies I can still hear my grandmother's mantra: use it up or wear it out make it do or do without". That mantra has served me well!
Ouch!! Poor thing. OMG! Submerging in water? I'm seeing the dirt. What would we do without DAWN. Really. Ugh! How many years of dirt was that? These bags are indestructible. Clean and burnished. You have given it a 21st century look. BRAVO! I would like to see you tackle that old buggaboo, ink stains.
My heart almost stopped when you put it into the bucket of water. But I cannot argue with the final results. I have some very old Coach bags from my Nana that may need this sort of care if I can swallow my fear of ruining it. Thank you for proof of care.

I found a vintage coach a few weeks ago. These things wear like iron. I like the vintage better because there are no markings on that that say coach. Don’t like labels!
I so completely agree, labels are tacky
Yes, the new Coach bags are a bit flashy. I suppose the company is trying to appeal to the younger buyer's. They like flashy stuff that screams the manufacturers name from a block away.
The first thing I do when I buy a Coach bag is throw out those little tags. I agree. Good quality doesn’t need a label
@@Rickie7756 you should consider reselling the tags! People love to collect them.
truuueee.. i dont like the newer designs. love the classic one, theyre more classy too. my opinion though eheheh ive been looking for preloved coach bags and wallets and planning tonrecolor some of them
Beautiful restoration, such an honor, and so deserving of the animal whose hide was used for this bag. Thank you.
I dont know if you are being sarcastic but I think it's humane to use every part of the animal. Not just the meat or the hide.
@@LM-zr9ky seemed like a genuine compliment to me….

Goodness. So we’re praising animals now. 🙄

🙌Exactly!!! Well said!!!👌 Definitely NOT a fan of the new ones!🙄👎🥺 I say BRING the old bags/styles BACK!!🙌 PLEASE!!!!🥺🙏👍
Ain’t that the Truth
These are the coach bags I absolutely love. I really dislike the completely different later bags with all those patterns and colors.
The new stuff is just ugly LV ripoffs and they look cheap in spite of the cost. Very sad.
I prefer the older ones.,the new ones are trash.
@@melodyhart1331 Yes! I had an old Coach bag from my aunt and replenished it. Buy oil and restored it. The older version is better and the leather too. Please PRAY for me.
Me too. The newer bags are not coach to me but copies of Gucci and other name brands. Coach was distinctive because it was good quality leather
And those zippers! So dangerous
I bought that exact bag in black for $50 I had it restored and couldn’t be happier. I had that bag in the 90’s and my mom had it. She passed away and I desperately wanted that bag for nothing other than sentimental value. I’m so happy I tracked one down.
I bought three of these bags, different colors, in the 1970’s. They are still intact, but grungy looking. They are made well! I’m going to try this.❤
Good job! My Dad (RIPP) was a master at restoring leather, tailoring, and knowing how to take ANY kind of spot out of any fabric.
That’s an art!
I have that exact Coach bag, same color and size and shape. Got it at a thrift store for $4...thirty years ago. Mine isn't quite that bad, but now I'm motivated to clean it up and use it again. Thanks.
This is a Coach bag that is worth having. The newer bags can't hold a candle to this one.
This reminded me of when I was a kid. We all wore leather shoes and my job on Saturday evening was to polish our shoes for Sunday church. Put on the cream polish, rub it around and then buff it with a soft brush. Nice and shiny for Sunday wearing.
I remember too
This speaks volumes about the quality of this vintage leather, craftsmanship only comparable to Hermes in my opinion.
Totally agree - the leather on vintage Coach is amazing. You could not do the same restoration on a newer Coach.
I won't .It takes a lot of work. I totally gave up. Lol. I love Coach bag. But too lazy to do that. Hohohoho...
@@pennytull7578 what product would you use to do that?
@@pennytull7578 you should put the missing step in detail here.
Coach vintage bags are everything. Owned one since the 90s & is still in great condition. They don't make leather like this anymore.
They don't make leather like this any more? Cows are different now? ;-)
This is the most peaceful video ever
I really enjoyed how serene and quiet this video was :)
I thrifted a really big leather backpack recently that's in rough shape and wanted to make sure I don't mess it up trying to clean it!! So relaxing and helpful
Thank you for not using music! Great job! Thanks for sharing
I have a few of my coach bags from 35 yrs ago. I wish I had all of them after watching this video. I’m amazed by the process. Thank you 🙏
I use saddle soap to clean leather.
I would use saddle soap as well. Would never submerge a bag in water.
@@just.j5302
If your purse is dropped in the sea, a pond, a swimming pool, or something really icky. Don't be afraid to rinse it well, use your good hair shampoo & rinse that out too. Dry it well, saddle soap, some leather conditioner & you're good to go, it's like new.
OR!!! take it to a Cobblers Shop, they will Clean, condition, and or Repair your purse just as they do your dirty Boots and Shoes.
Leather products have been used outside in the weather for thousands of years. There are many many books on how to take care of Leather.

I did read your post. I did state in the previous remark "where" you can have your leather cleaned, conditioned, and repaired, by professionals. I was not telling you what to do with your personal property, if that is your issue.
Sorry if this offended you.

Gotta preserve the Aigner

I had this bag's boxier cousin circa 95/96. I was a teenager and it was the first big purchase I made for myself once I had a job. This video makes me wish I still had it.
I have the bag your talking about. The clasp doesn't turn to keep it closed. It's in good condition. I've considered selling it.

What a beautiful job, it’s incredible! I was really horrified when you submerged it in WATER, but what do I know about it!

I have that very handbag. I also about 10 years ago, came across to Coach handbags at Goodwill. Bought both of them, paid $10 for two. So even if they're not an excellent shape, it's leather and you can fix the problems. Besides a little patina, is good.

I have vintage Coach leathers too. They are going to my daughter / granddaughter after I go. 😁
After scrounging around online for the styles I did not purchase.
Save the Coach for the relatives you love (!) and one more anecdote:
I was walking past a outlet Coach store. A make Retail worker opened the door as I walked by and said, “I saw your bag! It’s awesome and vintage. I love it!” I said - I know. And thank you!
P.s. thank you for video.
I rehab vintage Coach bags too. I love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
I love your grandmother's mantra, I've made it my own. She sounds like such a knowable and skilled lady!!!! You were definitely blessed!
Bravissima!!!!che bello sapere dare una nuova vita alle cose che sembrano vecchie ma hanno una storia! Complimenti💓👍
Ouch!! Poor thing. OMG! Submerging in water? I'm seeing the dirt. What would we do without DAWN. Really. Ugh! How many years of dirt was that? These bags are indestructible. Clean and burnished. There was probably some oxidized leather dye in that water as well.

Great work but I would have used a bit darker shade of the color because it did not match enough to cover the lighter worn areas.
My heart almost stopped when you put it into the bucket of water. But I cannot argue with the final results. I have some very old Coach bags from my Nana that may need this sort of care if I can swallow my fear of ruining it. Thank you for proof of care.
