I've got access to Netflix, iplayer, Amazon Prime, Disney and Apple TV. So can somebody explain to me why the highlight of my week's entertainment is to sit with a glass of wine and a packet of crisps watching a former fat man flog himself half to death in some ungodly physical challenge? Great stuff Ryan. Love it. Only one glass of wine tonight though... I'm doing Zwift's mini races in the morning! 😂
@@FoobsTon haha! You win comment of the week so far. 😅 Also... Id rather run up Everest than try to win those Zwift Insider tiny races. Now theyre brutal.
Mate, as a race organiser, please read the pre-race email. While some of it might seem cut and paste, there is often some really important stuff in there. If you're interested, come and do our marathon in the Surrey Hills.
Loving your content Ryan. There is something really good about the way you describe what you’re going through with real humility. There’s no bravado or arrogance. The narration adds another dimension too.
Nobody and no markers by the confusing bit. Marshall stood by the whacking great arrows lol. Incredible, Ryan! I think lots of us know those moments when we're rationalising quitting, and I can't stress how much I would have felt it was ok to bail at the halfway mark if I was in your shoes (and I could never be able to get to that point to begin with). Hope you take some extra sense of achievement and self-belief from that. Being able to push on when your body is telling you to stop is super strong. Huge respect (as always).
Cheers Lee but i disagree. You could 100% get to the halfway and further with your fitness levels. The Marshall by the huge arrow cracked me up. Other than the snack table, he was the only one on route. 😅
stumbled upon videos and love them Ryan. You have me and the mrs laughing. Love the humour, most of all, challenging yourself. Look forward to the next mate
@@RyanCondon not many people do what you do and push them absolute limits. your a legend. You inspired me to go to my first park run! Got a PB! 21:38. Nearly died at the end 😂 keep up the good work bro🫡
My first ever ultra (last November) I was last. I got lapped by every other person. It took me 6:13. But I was DELIGHTED and so proud. Which is how I reckon you should feel. Not many people could have done what you did Ryan 👍. Hope to see you at TP100 in a fortnight 👍👍
Oh my lord, Ryan. You continue to amaze. Who the hell designed this route? Perhaps Satan himself? Not only absurdly hilly at marathon distance, but the terrain is ROUGH. The fact that you didn't break an ankle is a minor miracle. Then those stairs. I have vertigo as well. Long, steep stairs where you can see a long way down are particularly triggering for me. Hats off to you for facing that obstacle and going right through it. And then, at the halfway point, when you're already exhausted, and the temptation to just stop right there must be overwhelming, you go right back out there and do it all over again. Incredible. You are THE MAN.
Love watching your videos. I only cycle but we all know that feeling of being alone, along way from the finish and feeling like death warmed up. It’s the most vulnerable and weak position you can put yourself in. I’ve done a lot of 100 mile plus rides on routes I’ve never seen before and very few go perfectly.
Extremely well done Ryan. I’ve run several hundred trail and ultra distances races and yes, sometimes they go a little bit wonky. But it really was a good training experience as you concluded for both the body and the mind. The ability to keep going when you feel shattered is a super power. In your analysis of the race consider better pacing and taking in far more calories and water right from the start of the race. Try to take onboard 250-300 calories per hour. It’s amazing how the mind and body can turn around after a small meal. Love your content. And good luck on your upcoming 100km race!
well done, great effort! It's one think bonking/running out of fuel but you're drinking a lot of water on a hot day, you definitely need to keep the salt levels topped up if you can.
Great stuff. You pretty much answered your own questions. While in training for the TP, fatigued starting, unfamiliar with course, went out too hard, negative impact on ability to consume calories. Take away the positives for when you are on the last 20% of the TP. Its all good experience and what a grand day out.
Monumental effort, well done. The elevation alone, without being on trail conditions, was huge. Such an achievement in those hot conditions. Sounds like you hit the wall… was your fluid loses high and skin salty? Could be that you ran out of glucagon and salt stores, very easily done in those temps and duration of exercise. Great vid as always.
Mate that was an awesome effort! I’ve felt like that running the Farnham Pilgrim Marathon ( one for you to consider). Take the positives and learn from the negatives. Chapeau champ 👍🏻
Hi Ryan love watching your journey from the start .you should be so proud of yourself.thank you for inspiring all that watch your videos. Keep the faith and never give in. Big love jerseyox ,now living in Spain😎
maybe the hills smoked your legs on top of the existing fatigue and then dehydrated. Mate, a training run can be just as much mental and you certainly nailed that! Big respect for finishing but that shirt!!!! 🤣🌶
I think that if you quit, it makes it easy to quit the next time…. But pulling out of this one would have been completely understandable. Awesome effort!
for some insight I'd have a look at HR at the bits where you are power waking up hills. Chances are you aren't miles stronger than others up them but they are holding back and pacing on the steep bits and you're going too hard even though its "just walking". (and this is adding up on this sort of run). Could be wrong but worth having a look as it may feel mentally easy to power up and get it over with but not be physiologically if you're in threshold HR. In short loads of elevation relatively destroys us on the heavier end.
My training roads! The school road out from the bottom of the golf course past the school to Gangers Hill is my usual way out to the Kent/Surrey hills on my bike. It’s a false flat and not easy at all! They’re hard enough climbs on tarmac on a bike, let alone a trail run so that’s an amazing job! 👏
The same company/organisation also stage the Vanguard Way Marathon which is also run in August. It’s an out and back marathon from Lloyd Park in Croydon to Westerham and back, some similar trails to the ones you encountered this time (but only up the big hill once on the way back!)
Is it possible you had Covid before the event, but weren’t aware? I was meant to do RTTS 100k over two days this year, but pulled out after day one. I felt so weak and was going dizzy going up the ‘hills’. I had covid but tested clear approx one week before RTTS. Clearly it had affected me more than I realised. Very well done for finishing it 😊👏👏
I used to love running but i just get injured all the time if its not my left shin its my right achillies, so i got back into tabbing what i used to do alot in the army, i put 15k in a day sack and walk its so good and amazing for weight loss if you struggle with injuries when running.
@@Tom_Tabbing Tabbing or even just walking is a great motovator and exercise routine in itself. Im going to do more tabbing I think. I loved the experience.
Not really about the video, but your beard is looking a lot better shaped, trim and nicer 👌(i only notice as attempting to grow a style myself). Are you using anything on it? oil? wax? Mine is only at 1cm long but time it needs shaped into some kind of style.
I was forced to go to the barbers 🧔 as Tracie refused to cut my hair anymore as apparently were not in lockdown anymore and I need to stop looking like a homeless runner. 😅 They also gave the old beard a trim. I just use conditioner. 👍 First time anyones asked about my beard.
Whilst you finished, it seems like you would have been better off abandoning the race. My sister recently did an ultra, and skipped water stations because they were crowded and didn't want to wait, and ended up seriously ill. It sounds like you were under-fuelled/hydrated, and the body was starting to slowly shutdown. Seems like you were lucky to finish...
@@RyanCondon oh for sure! Big kudos for finishing, just don't want to see you go so far into the hurt locker that you end up in a really bad place, is all :)
