Umm you don't understand that's how their culture works worldwide. If their families don't want their marriage the groom will "steal" the bride from her house and they will spend the night together. That way her parents will have to agree because the word will spread and the possibility of having lost her virginity will make her not a wanted wife to future husbands. This translates to having your life ruined for them because a woman's goal in life is to get married as a teen and have kids. So they will marry her with him as soon as possible to secure the family's honour. Nothing to do with their maturity. Actually if you don't go to school as a girl it's natural that they will also get you married

Instead off screwing up and having her first kiss with the wrong boy at 14 she screws up her entire future by marrying the first boy she has feelings for at 14. Reputation is everything in our community, and *everyone's* reputation is important - just in different ways.
It's certainly true that girls are the only ones expected to be a virgin on their wedding day, but boys are expected to provide a home on that wedding day that's ready to move into, be able to earn a living, and look after a girl correctly.
It might seem strange or old fashioned to outsiders, but that's how our community works. Every Traveller is under pressure to maintain a good reputation - otherwise our close communities wouldn't work, because there would be no trust.
The reputation requirements are based on the traditional ways (men were the breadwinners, women looked after the family) but, these days, we have far more choice than these programmes would have you believe. I'm a female Traveller with a master's degree and a job, but according to the TV, I should have left school at 13, got married at 16, and now be a grandmother.
These shows offer a very distorted view of the reality for Travellers.

This continues because people don't change their mentality on marriage this isn't tradition...tradition is breaking the plate on your wedding day in your culture or eating a specific food. This is damaging to young women to think marriage is the ideal goal when your in your teens because everyone else is married at 17. Yes it works for some but not for many. They have no education to fall back on no work experience and their frontal lobe isn't even developed to decide right from wrong. You would think after the mistakes of their mothers they would understand. Most of these marriages happen because the guys Wana have sex and the only way that can happen is marriage the girls have a fairy tale mindset of marriage and fall for it and for those couple of minutes it's not worth a lifetime of regret.

I agree with you. Had I married my first boyfriend, the guy I dated at 17, I'd be in a miserably abusive marriage with a clinically diagnosed Narcissist. God, just thinking about it makes me shiver. I'd be a shell of who I am today.
At 17, I thought it was love and that he was the best there was.
Over time I learned so much more about actual love, respect, and who I am as a person.
So many of these girls end up in abusive marriages. It's not just the culture. Honestly, I believe striving and seeking love/marriage (this firmly and devoutly) at such a young age usually signifies an underlying problem. Normally low self esteem, loneliness, or a lack of security/love at home.
They believe finding "the one" and getting married will be the end of their insecurities and desires. Unfortunately, that's very rarely, if ever, the case.
Always seems like they (just like I did at 16&17) have their standards determined by their own self worth. If you don't love yourself or have a high opinion of your worth, it's so easy to find someone that'll treat you exactly the way you treat you... And that's a heartbreaking thing. You don't even realize it.

I wonder how these girls feel when the marriage doesn’t work out? 🤔 Like, imagine waiting your whole life to get married and have a special day, but you find out the man you married isn’t comparable with you, cheats on you, or even abuses you, and you’re trapped because you don’t have a job or good education to fall back on. Even if the guy dies, the wife is screwed. I know this is how it was done in the olden days, but the part that’s often left out is how women struggled in these types of arrangements. It’s just so sad to think about.

The little sister is iconic 😂 I wouldn’t be so against the idea of getting married young (AFTER 18) if it wasn’t something these girls are groomed into from a young age. Ages birth to 18 should be for enjoying everything childhood has to offer and being protected by the adults around you but these girls don’t get that. It’s as bad as physical child abuse in my opinion!

If her parents really cared about her well being they wouldn't have allowed her to get married even after running away. That could've been a turning point in their family where they realized that she wasn't "ruined" just because she spent a night with a boy, but instead they sent their daughter off as a child bride. Disgusting.

I'm glad it did ❤️ for some young couples, it's a wonderful love story. My sibling got married young to a HS sweetheart & they are doing great a decade later. Unfortunately, it tends to be rare & I think it would be better to not expect all young people to marry for life. If the pressure to marry isn't there, it seems to work out more.
