Happy Monday everyone. Hope you had a great weekend! For a country that supposedly despises station wagons, Subaru managed to sell a little over 160,000 units in the US in 2023, making this car the best-selling Subaru model, outselling even the Crosstrek and Forester. Who else would like to see other brands more lifted station wagons like this car?
unfortunately i have heard the next version of the outback will follow the foresters path which looks like a ford explorer now, bigger and less fuel efficient, unless they tweaked something to improve efficiency. im not sure how fuel efficient even the hybrid versions will be. the previous eboxer crosstrek and forester sucked in fuel economy
I love my 24 wilderness, all black with legal tint all around. Unfortunately, my wife loves it more so I am getting a WRX and she's getting the wilderness.
I just got mine a week ago, I have nothing but praise for the Outback Wilderness it is the best and most refined Subaru I have even been in. I know the touring has a fancier inside, but the Wilderness is nice enough and the extra height and lower engine torque make for a better ride for me. She is quick and planted! Can't wait to take it off road but she is too new!
My dream car was a Subaru Outback when I was in my 30's. Since then I've owned two Outbacks(currently on my second). It's still my dream car in my late 40's.
I've always been a Toyota guy. During the new vehicle shortage (21/22) I was in need of a new car. Looked at Toyota and could only get quotes well above MSRP, and also wait times. Called a local Subaru dealer & they told me they don't do mark ups at all. I shopped around and found that to be the case with every single Subaru dealer in my area. Needless to say, I went with a Subaru. The car has been awesome and I now see why they're very popular in my area.
Yep me also. Same situation, Toyota would not work with a customer at all on price. Subaru actually came down just a little on price and I think I had to wait 3 months for my outback
What Subarus shine is when it snows. I drove my Forster through a mountain snowstorm on the highway. Everyone in front of me is hydro planning including other part time AWD cars. I was driving at 50 mph without anything special turned on easily. When making turns at local roads, with snow, I saw all other cars drift, I turn on X-mode and nothing bad happens, the car grips the road.
Last i checked with the local dealership they said they did away woth the acoustic glass in 17 i believe. They just included better sound proofing this time around
When originally introduced, the Outback was simply a raised Legacy wagon. Sales did so well in America that Subaru eventually discontinued the Legacy wagon. The wagon was always more attractive, but money talks. The fully framed out windows on the doors helped reduce NVH. The turbo is mandatory, to my way of thinking. Subaru has as much, or more, experience in the turbocharging of engines than any manufacturer. For years, it was a very successful participant in the World Rally Challenge. It spent alot of money putting together a partnership with ProDrive which always employed the best drivers, mechanics and engineers. Colin McRae and Richard Burns, sadly both are deceased unrelated to driving, were wildly loved for winning World Championships in Subaru Impreza Turbos. They did more to popularize Subarus in Europe than any ad campaign ever could.
Love the Outback Touring XT. As fast as a WRX but much more practical. Hopefully the New York Auto Show will debut the 2025 redesigned Outback with the standard NA motor, the turbo XT model and a hybrid option too, just like the 2026 Forester will have! 😍 Now we just need the return of the Forester XT! 🙏🙏🙏
This is my dream car… currently have a basic model ‘17 Outback- 2nd owner and I love it! Put on 50k miles in 2 years (up to 130k now😅) one day I’ll get a new one 🤞
A couple of issues with your review. The rear seats do recline! The lever is hidden by the seat belt, it is located on the outside bolster. Also, you can leave all of the safety systems on, and turn off the beepint alerts.
I bought a 2024 Outback Limited 2.5 in August. Subaru offered a $2,000 discount, out the door price of $37,500. The is my sixth Subaru after switching to a couple of CX 5’s. I must say nicest interior, best ride and quietest Subaru I’ve owned! Mine came with winter mats cargo and back of seat backs protection. Also, wireless charger. Downsides include slow acceleration, loud engine noise with CVT and disappointing MPG. Only get 21.5 in town but 29-30 on highway. Window sticker said EPA city 27, I’ve yet to achieve that! Tom Tom navigation is not very good, switched to Apple Car Play solved that. Overall , very satisfied, but maybe turbo was better option since mpg is what’s claimed!
We are two months and 2,900 miles into our Cosmic Blue Touring XT. My wife is the primary driver. Very comfortable. About 25 MPG. Love everything except the CVT.
You know it surprises me people haven’t played around with the Cruise Control Speed Speed settings. If you set it in the highest setting it has much better throttle response in all driving not just cruise control. It makes a huge difference between the 4 different modes.
Can someone explain how this much heavier, bigger Outback with way more ground clearance gets a much better fuel economy and runs on regular while having almost the same 0-60 vs the WRX? Wtf have they been doing with WRX?
The WRX's 6MT has very short gearing and requires a 2-3 shift before 60 mph. The gap widens in the quarter mile where the WRX is about a half second quicker than the Outback XT. That same short gearing is why the WRX also has garbage fuel economy as you're turning a lot of revs on the highway. It's also why the Outback WN has awful fuel economy as the WN uses a shorter final drive than other Outback XT models. FWIW the Outback/Legacy XT and Ascent run higher max boost pressure than the WRX, their motors make almost 20 more lb-ft of torque than the WRX, but the WRX makes up the difference with more advance by running on 91. The XTs and the Ascents prioritize low end torque to get moving because owners will be hauling people and stuff. This focus on low end performance helps in a drag race which has never been the WRX's focus. The WRX is a canyon carver and it's all about maintaining momentum in the turns and that 3-4 shift on the open road.
I was thinking about the turn signals, and i wonder if the fading effect of the non-led lights might actually make the turn signals a bit more noticeable that the simple on/off of the LED lights. And to your comment on having a digital display, wouldn't that be one more expensive thing to fix once it breaks? The analog gauges just work.
thanks for the review Sofyan, not an SUV fan (half the drivers can't control or park them!). Really enjoying my Magnetite Grey 2022 Touring model in north Scotland (my 2nd Outback), in a recent Subaru UK survey I completed, only 2 things I said they need to make the Outback near perfect, XT turbo engine (we only get the 2.5L limited to 169PS in UK) and all weather tyres as standard, instead of summer Bridgestone's.
I agree. The beefed wheel cladding is hideous, and nearly destroys the look of this otherwise beautiful car. I wish they would go back to the previous simpler cladding of the pre-refresh model.
The facia has grown on me not unexpectedly. I went with the wilderness because initially I didn’t like the new grill /cladding design but I think I would have been happy with it. That said my wilderness model is loaded with features and looks so cool.
I don't understand the fake shifts. If you want shifts in your vehicle, just use a regular transmission. The purpose of a CVT is to hold at ample power/efficiency.
Ordered a 2025 Touring XT and finally dumped the dismal 2016 Dodge Journey (yeah stupid me). The leap in quality and features is stratospheric. I imagine kinda like going from Rosie O'Donnell to Livvy Dunne ❤😅
Love my '23 outback touring XT.... I bought it for the safety features and it's has paid off several times so far. If you think it takes 2 seconds to react to something, My Subbie has already reacted before I could think of it.
You know what would make these things sell? Offer one that is totally stripped down of all, and I mean, [all] of the electronic garbage and give me a unit I can open up and rinse out with a hose. I want a utility vehicle, not an Iphone.
As an Outback owner since 1998, I have found that regarding big cargo areas, the Outback is superior to most SUV's unless they are considerably larger outside. The Length of the cargo area is the clincher, as it comes in useful quite often, and I have never had an issue with height inside. Current offerings often are quite short behind the rear seats, and require loading up to that ceiling, to carry what an Outback can, without exceeding the rear seat height. The length makes sleeping inside just fine for my 5'10" body as well. And offroad? Far better than most people realize.
Sofyan, The ongoing success of the Outback bodes well for the upcoming Crown Signia if Toyota can keep prices reasonably reasonable. 🤞🤞 As a general question, doesn't anyone build cars with a 40/20/40 second row anymore? A vehicle like an Outback is crying out for a proper ski pass-through. 🤨
At least they come with the cute built-in roof cross bars. I hate the wind noise from regular roof racks when you have the windows open. This built-in cross bars are a plus!😊
BTW, putting a hybrid on the turbo would be an absolute crime. The quickest way to ruin a great engine like Subaru's flat four turbo would be to put a hybrid on it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Your age is showing. There's literally no downside to hybridizing any engine. It adds power, the end. Subaru is way behind the times with their powertrains.
@@victreebel170obviously you don't understand how boxer engines work and are designed differently than traditional V style engines...a hybrid wouldn't work the same without altering what people like about the boxer....
Also, I would think the non-hybrid resale value will be better in 6-10yrs, no aged hybrid battery for the 2nd owner to worry about, or maintenance costs associated with a more complex hybrid powertrain when the warranty over.
The exterior is growing on me, even with all the cladding. It is a shame there aren't LED signals on this thing. Did they remove all the static cornering lamps from the brand? I am so happy to see analog gauges still. Digital gauges look so tacky and cheap. The interior is really nice, they don't need to fix what isn't broke!
@@jwhughes3 Thank you for responding. I now own a 2024 Outback Touring XT turbo and I love it. What power it has even though I am not a fast driver. The stereo in the Touring XT is awesome to.
This is my next vehicle whenever my 2015 Honda Pilot EX-L dies. By the way the Pilot runs and drives, it may be the last vehicle I'll own as old age is at my door. I've owned a 2009 Forester XT that was great and never left me stranded here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Pilots are decent in winter but I've heard an Outback with snow tires you can climb trees if need be.
Our 24 Pilot EX-L was hit and totaled after only owning it a year. My wife found she didn’t use the 3rd row and between Forester and Outback wanted that larger cargo area and the Touring XT ride. I’m really enjoying driving it more than the Pilot.
The rear seats of outback xt do recline: control is on outside edge near the seat cushion. As for 20" wheels, no thanks...our roads have many potholes and huge wheels/rubber band tires guarantee flats and bent wheels then.
I'm looking at the Outback for the cargo room for my dogs 🐾 Less head room compared to the big rigs don't matter. Comfort, off road and winter driving do.
I purchased an Outback touring XT and love it except for the vented seats. They are not working like they did when I first got the car. Dealer checked the system and said it was working- not ! seats don't move air.
I’m always a bit curious to the brake torquing of Subarus when testing a 0-60 times when the EyeSight system expressly states that it will cut power when both the brake and throttle are pressed simultaneously.
I like this colour. It’s not quite as dark as a black cherry but I saw it on the road (not a sunny day) and it’s almost black but you know it’s not. I prefer body coloured door handles but chrome is okay. I think the top trim has more chrome touches.
I picked up my 24 Touring XT in cosmic blue with java brown interior two weeks ago. It has a ton of features on the car which pushes the car above it's price point. You get a lot of car for the money and it is a fun car to scoot around in. It' is a fine non luxury ,luxury car. I looked at the A4 allroad too and it wasn;t worth the extra 12K.
I own a 23 Mazda 3 Turbo and i have this right now for a rental. And my 3 feels so much more powerful. Idk if its the torque? But this doesn't feel anywhere near as quick. Also the CVT is nope. Cant wait to get my 3 back. This car is nice but for over 40k no thank you.
I am looking to get a Subaru. I need something that will allow my mother to sit higher up and for me to put her three wheel walker in the vehicle. I also need it to fit properly in my garage of my townhouse and not hit the garage door unit. Any suggestions?
I have a 2022 premium edition Subaru Outback magnetite gray with 18,000 miles. I'm looking to potentially sell it back to the dealership I have about 10,500 dollars left owed on it. I want to upgrade to a touring package for the horsepower and features. How much money could I potentially get for it, or should I just keep it?
I agree with the cladding. It’s really hideous. You’d have to buy in black to mask it. My biggest complaint about the Outback is the step over height of the front seats. If you’re older or less mobile it’s really difficult to get in and out.
Yeah I like the analog gauges for speedo and tach. The small digital in the middle gives you just enough info like music info or directions and a few fuel economy numbers
I test drove a Touring XT. My experience was that the ride quality was just okay and the cabin wasn't all that quiet. The lag when accelerating wasn't something I want to deal with on my commute into the big city. They should've kept the engine sound out of the cabin, because it's an ugly, depressing noise. I didn't find the driver's seat to be all that comfortable. I also drove the Forester Wilderness and liked the seat more in that. With all that said, considering all the powertrain problems most manufacturers are having, I haven't marked the Outback off my list. I could probably get used to it.
Wow, you preferred stressed out grinding drone of the 2.5 to the relatively smooth and stable tone of the 2.4 turbo? I've got one of each in my driveway and it's no question which one sounds better.
As an auto glass technician, Subarus eyesight is the ultimate pain in the ass to calibrate with a replacement windshield. Worse than the Germans. I have no issue owning a Subaru, just don’t ask me to replace a windshield on the cheap with a three camera eyesight system.
Subaru has better history with them than Nissan. I bought my wife a used 2019 Crosstrek with the cvt and 85,000 kms and a 200,000 km no time limit mechanical warranty. I have driven Subaru cvts with 300,000 kms on them and they are still running nicely.
@@SwedeCT The problem with Mazda is they all look the same no matter which one you pick. CX5, CX50 everyone has the same shape and they are not good looking at all.
Technically there is a heads up. It is just warning lights but they work good. Also I noticed this model doesn't have the auto hold brake. (I have this car and it has it). The wireless charger sucks so don't get it. Mine came with it and I want it out.
Sofyan, I agree with you on the current OB styling vs. the "pre-refresh" Gen 6. I'm fine with the styling of our '22 Outback Limited XT. One thing that Subaru changed in the 'Touring' product lineup is offer the Napa leather seats in black as well as brown. My wife & I would have ordered our '22 Outback as a Touring model, but that brown interior with the blue exterior paint looked like a train wreck.
No hood scoop? No thanks… The one exterior feature that made Subaru turbocharged Legacy and Outback vehicles unique and badass. Now they all look like your typical grocery-getter mommy missile. Subaru should at least make it an option.
We have a 22 Legacy Limited XT and love it in most ways. Just test drove a 23 Outback Touring XT as a 2nd car and the brakes were terrible. Spongy and sank inches at a stop. The dealer said "they're fine." um, nope. Anyone else experience this?
I can't edit my comment so let me just clarify that the 2023 we test drove only had 7,000 miles and is certified used. Also, I have read that they're using a different brake booster as of 2023 and I've seen comments in Outback groups complaining about the same problem.
@@66cotter Thx, we're going to try another Outback soon. We liked it very much (which makes sense since we like our Legacy), but now looking for a Limited. The front visibility in the Touring is compromised by the contraption above the rear-view mirror -- there's no daylight above the mirror, as there is in the Limited, and part of it sticks out to the left of the mirror. Odd. Anyway, will you be buying the one you drove? If so, congrats!
@@nyrocks5580 I'm waiting for pricing, payments etc on a '24 limited in the gorgeous Mahogany Pearl, and a low mileage' 23 Premier in the green. I don't like the color as much, but about 7k less. I'll see what the numbers tell me. I like the Premiers camera for the mirror, because I might be loading it up and be difficult to see in a regular rear view mirror. The leather in the limited seems cheap, especially on the steering wheel, which I'm not fond of.
Subaru really needs to stop with the body cladding, it’s hideous & we all know what happens to it from the sun especially here in CO. Also please for the love of all that is holy get rid of the CVT.
I like the older style interior accept for that middle screen I’d rather have a smaller screen with actually buttons like on the older grand cherokees.
That backup camera is shockingly bad. For a company that cares so much about safety, having a camera with that poor of quality is disappointing. In 2016 that may have been possible, but for a brand new car in 2024, that looks like it belongs in a Mitsubishi Mirage, not a top trim-level Subaru. Also, for a company that cares so much about safety, why would they put climate controls on the screen? Imagine trying to press those small buttons going 75 down the highway? Physical buttons are so much easier to use. It is sad that two little faults spoil the car, but they are important issues that Subaru should fix. Bring back physical buttons, and make the camera better.
Have two Subaru Turbos now; but, the longer Outback is too long for my garage. Waiting for turbo Crosstrek and Forester to replace my WRX and Forester.
Picked up a 24 OBW for under $40k last year after testing many SUV's. I just didn't want to pay $50+k for a well optioned SUV when it is a winter car for me. manual option would be awesome but will never happen.
I drove this car for a week. The size of a car is impressive. Much larger than it looks in pictures. Barely fits in 24 ft garage. It feels pleasantly heavy and solid on the road. The ride is composed with slight lean in sharp turns. The interior is grade A without useless doohickeys of Mercedes, Audi, bmw. The tires are the highest point and the lowest point: they absorb most of rut and imperfections but wallow into understeer in the cornering. Negative #1: it is hard to wash the roof and dry it with a towel. Negative #2: fake gear shifts of the CVT ( as they say in Odessa:" Mr Rabitowitz, please either remove that crucifix off your neck or pull up your underwear")
I have always loved the Outback but with this 11.3 screen position and the backup screen size. It's NOT for me any longer. I'm thinking selling mine 2022 Outback and buy a used 2023 Forester with the 8 inches screen, with the easy usage of controls and good big backup screen! Yes, the resolution on 11.3 screen is horrible!

It would be cool to have Subaru do a regular version of the Legacy wagon as well. Something more sporty and fun. Less body cladding. Great review.
They have it, it's called the Levorg but for some reason decides not to sell to us in North America.
Anyway to get that annoying message you see pop up when turning on the subie?
BTW, putting a hybrid on the turbo would be an absolute crime. The quickest way to ruin a great engine like Subaru's flat four turbo would be to put a hybrid on it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Your age is showing. There's literally no downside to hybridizing any engine. It adds power, the end. Subaru is way behind the times with their powertrains.
@@victreebel170obviously you don't understand how boxer engines work and are designed differently than traditional V style engines...a hybrid wouldn't work the same without altering what people like about the boxer....
@@victreebel170the downside is another complex system that will fail eventually.. you sound arrogant
@dustinmorris13, What is cladding?
@@Freddie-gv1ygthe plastic at the corners and body edges.
@@jwhughes3 Thank you for responding. I now own a 2024 Outback Touring XT turbo and I love it. What power it has even though I am not a fast driver. The stereo in the Touring XT is awesome to.
The rear seats do recline. There's a lever that's flush on the side of the rear seat that you pull and it'll recline
It's a well-rounded vehicle, does 90% of everything at a high level
Crazy how much people love these things. Neighbors have 2 of them. It just looks boring. But if it works then why not
As one of the very few station wagon options available in the US, it's quite unique looking.
I'm looking at the Outback for the cargo room for my dogs 🐾 Less head room compared to the big rigs don't matter. Comfort, off road and winter driving do.
When is the 2025 touring model coming out?
The rear seats do recline.
Excellent review, these cars are among the very best on the road.
the seats do recline, its a small lever by where the bottom and back meet near the doors, its pretty hidden
My dad had an '05 Outback and loved it. The look of these is timeless.
Have a touring xt in black,,,LOVE IT
The infotainment is terrible other than that it's a decent car.
Terrible? So it doesn’t work at all? That would be the definition of terrible.
I like this colour. It’s not quite as dark as a black cherry but I saw it on the road (not a sunny day) and it’s almost black but you know it’s not. I prefer body coloured door handles but chrome is okay. I think the top trim has more chrome touches.
Hey Soyfan, both the Subaru Forester and the Outback -
DO HAVE RECLINING REAR SEATS!
Take your time and get it right!
Post your review so we can analyze it.
CX-50 2.5 TURBO AWD MERIDIAN EDITION !!! 42000$ ! everything in the topic... 👍
A great all-around vehicle! I definitely like the updates they made on the front.
No digital display please, less compartments means less clutter. If it ain’t broken don’t fix it
Yeah I like the analog gauges for speedo and tach. The small digital in the middle gives you just enough info like music info or directions and a few fuel economy numbers
Are you sure about the CD player?
Are you going to review the legacy as well since it got a refreshed look ??
Great review - very thorough
As an auto glass technician, Subarus eyesight is the ultimate pain in the ass to calibrate with a replacement windshield. Worse than the Germans. I have no issue owning a Subaru, just don’t ask me to replace a windshield on the cheap with a three camera eyesight system.
This is definitely on my radar, but i have a trust issue with CVT transmissions. Im leaning a bit more to the cx50
Subaru has better history with them than Nissan. I bought my wife a used 2019 Crosstrek with the cvt and 85,000 kms and a 200,000 km no time limit mechanical warranty. I have driven Subaru cvts with 300,000 kms on them and they are still running nicely.
CX-5 Turbo for Driving Dynamics ✔️
Drive both,,,Outback way smoother ride,,,,that’s what I like
@@SwedeCT The problem with Mazda is they all look the same no matter which one you pick. CX5, CX50 everyone has the same shape and they are not good looking at all.
Please, introduce a 360 degree camera. Personally, I wouldn’t buy without it..
Technically there is a heads up. It is just warning lights but they work good. Also I noticed this model doesn't have the auto hold brake. (I have this car and it has it). The wireless charger sucks so don't get it. Mine came with it and I want it out.
I've owned both an XT and a non-XT Outback. The naturally aspirated motor definitely feels quicker off the line.
Had a CVT transmission once…hard pass. Owned an Outback Eddie Baurer pkg and Tribeca both very good products.
Strange. I thought the rear seats in Outback recline.
I wish I could get this exact same car except with the dashboard and all of the technology associated with it out of a 2014 Outback.
Wait! Rear seats dont recline? Even my lower tier Forester has rear reclining seats.
They actually recline. He was wrong about that. Or at least they do in the Canadian version.
A very practical vehicle that IS "bang for the buck."
Love my OBW 24 autumn green
I test drove a new limited yesterday. They were fine in that car.
Back seat do recline. Don't they?
Excellent review.
Am considering getting OUTBACK when VW Lease is up.
Subaru really needs to stop with the body cladding, it’s hideous & we all know what happens to it from the sun especially here in CO. Also please for the love of all that is holy get rid of the CVT.
Why don't you do your research the cvt is really good and smooth...
@Jonathan-mp32xyea but they can b crappy not super reliable but ok
Cost cutting tht cladding made the new wrx ugly asf not desire
@Jonathan-mp32x mainly abuse for sure
Really great car❤
Well done 🎉
My Touring XT only does fake shifts at or close to full power well into turbo boost. Driven normally, no fake shifts.
