As an avid camper/backpacker/hiker/mountain biker/kayaker who does so with an awd cadillac ats, I can confidently say that the standard crosstrek would be all the offroad capability I would ever need to enjoy my hobbies. As it stands, the ats has never failed to get me to where I need to go, but there have been times where the gravel roads would get very bad and I'd have to pick my line very carefully to make it through. I'd be that guy who gets to the trailhead and turns heads because every other vehicle there is a truck or "off roader" suv, then I roll up in my caddy lol. The reason I don't bother getting something more capable is because even though I get out for an adventure every single month, 95% of my time is still spent on road. Fuel efficieny, comfort, and on road performance still far outweigh my need to sacrifice those things for really nothing more than peace of mind when the road occasionaly gets rough. And for reference, I live in michigan and still go winter camping in the up and to the remote areas of our beautiful state, so dont assume that the only reason my awd sedan can do those things is because i live somewhere like florida lol. My dealer gave me a Crosstrek Wilderness while my wife’s Ascent is getting serviced. I was truly surprised how comfortable, quiet, and solid this car is.
Ryan, Thanks for pushing the Crosstrek Wilderness through this trail. Since the first time I saw the preproduction car, I wanted to figure out how to reduce the lower lip. You have just proven to me that in needs to be removed for better clearance. It's a little shovel, of course it's there for getting air into the CVT cooler so ... trade offs. Anyway, Thanks for a great video and improving the proving grounds!
Makes sense. I live in colorado, and our merge lanes have a short red light for each car. There is no way you could get up to 83 to merge. The lights space traffic out so you do t need to speed.
I just bought one of these. The front bumper 'lip' is too low, Gonna have it removed. Excellent vehicle so far. So glad they made the 2.5 ltr available on the Crosstrek!
@@trentkesler7260 Keep in mind that the front lip pulls air into an active damper for the Transmation Cooler. not to mention all the underside plastics... If you remove it you need to replace it somehow.

So I was excited to see this video when it popped up this morning. Good job on all your videos and getting this nice testing ground set up.
His and other videos along with the safety factor Consumer Reports did, AND crash tests led me to by my first ever Subaru. It's a 2024 Forester Wilderness.
@@drivingsportsI hated this color. The dealer had green or red, so I chose the red CTW with the gold accents on the roof rack. The car is great, and it looks ridiculous enough to make me smile whenever I see it.
It looks like the biggest challenge for it was the loose dirt, which would challenge most non-hardcore vehicles. It would be interesting to see it redo this course in a year when the trail is hard packed. It will still have the angles and dips, but the loose soil should harden up.
It would also be interesting if Ryan had funds to swap the tires out for more offroad type tires and see the difference. Those tires on that car are nothing more than all season tires...they're less aggressive than the plain old M&S tires on my 2WD Ford Ranger LOL.
@@wildbill23c It's not about the funds. They tests vehicles as they come out of the factory, especially on these CUVs when most owners hardly will push things to the limit and Ryan like to show what the capability is when the limits are pushed.
That little crosstrek continues to impress at the price point. I bet the RAV4 TRD would not have made it. Bronco Sport Badlands NEEDS to make an appearance on this trail. As always thanks for the hard work you do Ryan. Love your content.

As always a great video! Thank you. I've found that turning off the eyesight front collision is essential when doing rougher trails. I have a 2024 OBW, and had a 2202 OBW (same issue). You'll find that it cuts power and limits throttle even before it tells you (blinky lights and sounds) or actually stops the car. Drivability goes way up with it off. Would like to see you repeat some of the same more challenging sections with it turned off. You might just find that the Crosstrek moves through those sections much more easily.
After watching your videos on the crosstrek in snow and dirt, I'm beginning to believe if you could get it going fast enough uphill, it could take you to the moon. Incredible little vehicle.

Thanks for the excavating and Crosstrek review DS - here in Tasmania I’ve owned 12 Subarus over many years - in fact we have the highest proportion of Subarus per capital than anywhere else in the world - I am pleased to see that Subaru have reintroduced the analogue coolant temperature gauge after removing it in 2008 which I suspect is why so many have overheated and destroyed engines because a simple red warning light like I had in my 2010 XT Forester meant it was too late because the engine was cooked - we also get a lot of CVT failures like Nissan’s XTrail so I’d like to see Subaru/Toyota reintroduce a conventional automatic transmission as Nissan has now done with the new Pathfinder - Crosstrek Wilderness has good ground clearance and looks great with all that reintroduced body cladding to protect fenders etc that all started with my original 1997 Forester LTD which came with 280mm of ground clearance - we have blackberry plagues here because some British idiot decided they wanted something to eat on their bushwalks.

With longer travel suspension and a front lower lip not as far forward this could be an even more awesome car. It would also be cool to see more of these in rally and rallycross races and longer suspension travel could easily win over some potential customers.
I had an old GX470, and it was a fun vehicle. But I am very happy with my new outback. It is just so much better for what I do, which is mostly long road trips driving in a varied conditions from the desert to snowy mountain roads.
Great demonstration I will not be taking my New wilderness through that type of offloading, but it’s great to know and I am enjoying the heck out of my new SUBARU. This is our sixth one.
I just replaced my Tacoma 2WD w/ locker with a crosstrek wilderness. I can tell you the Tacoma would not have gotten up the first hill with loose dirt. Cause I did exactly the same kind of thing this winter and got stuck.
Your content is always top of the line. You clearly are passionate about the cars and the content you make with them. I love that subaru is really embracing the heavier off road market. Sure, the car still has its limitations but it's coming along in the right direction.
I have maybe the only Crosstrek in North Carolina with a manual shift and i love it for my hiking fishing paddling and wildlife photography retirement hobbies. I consider it ann all road notvam off toad vehicles. Perfect for dirt roads.
Great video. A bit struggling here and there, but to be fair, I wouldn't mistake what you built for a road 😂 I've been all over Alligator River in our Forester, and nowhere there are the roads anywhere close to what you got. But it's nice to know that if I go nuts entirely - like you, Wilderness will see me through. 🐺👍
Sooner or later, we'll have to give the wife's lifted 21 Crosstrek Sport to our college kid. Probably gonna have to buy one of these for her. Just for the cool factor.
17:07 It's because of you and my viewing that I bought a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness... You should get commission on that! Keep up the nice content! Chad
Pretty cool test track for these CUVs. Although my criticism would be the ditch might be a little to deep for CUVS, seeing that the Crosstrek is such a compact vehicle. I imagine every vehicle will scratch their front fenders on this section. Also the terrain is still very fresh, almost like loose sand in some section, which is tough. Needs some rain to pack it down. When you have to use the locker on your Ford Tremor on one section, that means it's too much for crossovers.
This is a terrific video. Never saw your channel before but I am a follower now. I’m thinking ahead to my next car and looking at the Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness edition. This video has been so helpful! Thank you very much for this. The Crosstrek Wilderness would easily meet my needs in terms of the types of roads or terrain I would typically have to traverse.
Been on the fence of buying this for a while. Love all the videos, definitely going to make the purchase. Would love to see the same course completed with your pick in more capable tires.
Great video as usual, Ryan. Looking forward to seeing more vehicles on the new section. I was curious, have you ever had occasion to test any of the Torq Locker aftermarket auto lockers on any of your courses side-by-side with a stock Subaru with XMode? I think you had the video a while back where that guy had one on his Outback, but that wasn't your own vehicle/course, and if I remember right you had your 4Runner at that time, not a Subaru.
There is a big debate between Subaru owners if thay need X Mode deep mud & snow ,thay clame it will be enough to cancel traction control... my opinion it will not make the Subaru move on. X mode deep mud &snow is not perfect but is help a lot . great video, thanks again.
Now that Subaru has FINALLY updated EyeSight(TM) to support manually transmission, I'd totally buy a Crosstrek or Forester if they brought back manual transmission for them, but nope. They had to get rid of manual transmission first, and then add EyeSight support.
@@matthewjohnson1211 You own a Wilderness? He was testing the brake vectoring or whatever it's called. Usually, it can get itself out when it's stuck, on his video and others I've seen. The difference here was him having to use more gas and momentum. That's good info.
@@Madaster1917 No, I don’t have the wilderness -but I would trade my 2019 in a sec if the wilderness came in manual transmission! The one negative I can see about the wilderness (besides CVT) is the approach angle. I was just looking at that lower front lip at the dealer last week and here in Video in kinda became an issue.
In Europe that have a Toyota Yaris Cross with an AWD system and traction control system done so poorly that 2WD vehicles surpass it. Too bad I couldn't see one try to tackle this course. 😅
The Yaris cross AWD is a hybrid and an embarrassment to AWD. It gets a 5hp motor at the back. It costs 30k and even with snow and trail mode. The fwd petrol version will perform better in rough conditions.... I garantee it wouldn't even make the entrance to this course...
It’s a great little car, which is why I bought one for our daughter, but having spent a little time underneath one of these, I would caution against anyone thinking to really beat one of these up off road on a regular basis because the suspension while a bit tougher than some, just isn’t built for real off road. Doing a hundred yards of rocks and logs is one thing. Holding up over years of this is different, and it won’t. Just not made for it. Washboarded dirts roads and such, sure. But do this kind of thing a lot and you’ll be in for some repairs soon enough. Be aware of its limitations and it’s a fantastic car.
We own a Crosstrek and while it's a great little car it's not designed to be taken on this sort of terrain. They're great in the snow, dirt roads and even some logging roads.
I think adding hybrid power to these cars will make them much better. Better low-end torque and efficiency while crawling. Not to mention more accurate TC with electric motors. Clearly these cars are best on flatter surfaces but it is good to see how far it can go in extreme cases. Not bad at all. I'm sold on Subaru AWD.
I have done worse roads in my 2021 6MT Crosstrek consistently, but I might not have been that careful with it... I tend to use as much momentum as possible to climb out of obstacles.
How about the Ford Explorer or Chevy Traverse on this test trail. By the way, you answered a big plant question. I have those blackberry weeds scattered around my yard.
The Forester Wilderness has a much better approach angle than the Crosstrek. (23.5 vs 20) It might be able conquer this new course without scooping dirt.
given that most people actually thinking of taking one on anything harder than a fire road will be putting more capable tires on, I think that's a warranted upgrade for your testing.
@@RRr-yl8zr Absolutely! My wife has a ‘21 Forester with the CVT. It’s a nice car & great in the snow, but that CVT makes it absolutely uninspiring to drive.
It was fun to see this Crosstrek being run through a challenging course by someone who knows whet they’re doing. Even if Subarus are Russian tank simulators, and as a daily driver the CVT makes for a truly annoying experience.
Imagine this thing with a rear TorqLocker, a high-clearance steel front bumper, some MTs, and a winch. It's a little over $32K USD, and it can tow 3500lb!
In Xmode 1 (snow/dirt) might turning off vehicle dynamics improve xmode performance (allow more wheel spin)? would be good to know as many Subarus only have single mode X-mode.
The achilles heel with these vehicles isn't necessarily their 4wd system (although likely the system could still be more aggressive (say like Atrac for Toyota, which is one of the best); but it's more to do with the torque management in place to protect the CVT transmission. The fact that it has a CVT means the system has to be far more of a protective system in order to keep temps down due to the nature of cvts... If this had a manual option, or better yet, a conventional auto, the system could get way more aggressive with its torque transfer system.
Subaru please sponsor this guy. He does more work for your products than any other youtuber.
Building your own course is very impressive. Glad to see that the Crosstrek made it through mostly unscathed!

@@drivingsportswould you rent it out to enthusiasts?
@@LongIslandMopars Haven’t thought about it much. Site needs some development before we do that.
@@drivingsports Gotcha. Thanks!
love my 24 crosstrek limited! they didn’t have any wilderness available so i saved some $$
I have maybe the only Crosstrek in North Carolina with a manual shift and i love it for my hiking fishing paddling and wildlife photography retirement hobbies.
Wow, Im impressed that thing made it through. I might have to go test drive one.
I can agree with this, if it's too deep for the CTW, it's probably going to be difficult for all the others. Bronco sport might make it though.
Is there a video where this vehicle is loaded with gear for camping and tested? Great video!👍
In our road trip video the trunk is full of gear.
Did you end up getting? If so, how do you like it?
Great job once again Ryan 💯 Do you think my Crosstrek Sport would make through? Man you have one of the best jobs!!
Thinking about a purchase of one of the three Wilderness. Impressed by the Crosstreck but not sold on it. Great Information.
scrapes on the bumper are "badges of honor" and help offset the rock chips on the hood.
Been on the fence of buying this for a while. Love all the videos, definitely going to make the purchase. Would love to see the same course completed with your pick in more capable tires.
Very informative video about the Crossterk capabilities, thank you!
Another great video Ryan! I'd love to bring my Bronco Sport Badlands with Toyo At3s to that course (I live in Seattle).
So capable 👌🏼thanks for sharing your content with us!
Ryan you’re the best ! Thank you for this review.❤
Great video. First time I've seen the Wilderness really struggle on your channel. Now I know what to maybe avoid in my 2022 Forester Wilderness ha
Slight bit of click-bait I would say…The crosstrek looked “challeged” -but other than getting it’s nose stuck -made it pretty smoothly.
Approach angle on the FW is better than the CTW but I would probably still do one of those obstacles with caution
Toyotas are terrible off-road except 4 runner which is ok
It’s a great little car, which is why I bought one for our daughter, but having spent a little time underneath one of these, I would caution against anyone thinking to really beat one of these up off road on a regular basis because the suspension while a bit tougher than some, just isn’t built for real off road. Doing a hundred yards of rocks and logs is one thing. Holding up over years of this is different, and it won’t. Just not made for it. Washboarded dirts roads and such, sure. But do this kind of thing a lot and you’ll be in for some repairs soon enough. Be aware of its limitations and it’s a fantastic car.
This Subaru will do better off road than the cyber-urinal
Tesla still hasn't activated the locking differential feature on the CT.
I love Subaru. No joke
I have done worse roads in my 2021 6MT Crosstrek consistently, but I might not have been that careful with it... I tend to use as much momentum as possible to climb out of obstacles.
what a beautiful car. I hope to buy one of those in the future
How about the Ford Explorer or Chevy Traverse on this test trail. By the way, you answered a big plant question. I have those blackberry weeds scattered around my yard.
Please run the Forester Wilderness through this, or have you and I missed it?
I believe he plans to run the 2025 Forester Wilderness through this whenever that’s out (as it’ll be newly redesigned by then).
The Forester Wilderness has a much better approach angle than the Crosstrek. (23.5 vs 20) It might be able conquer this new course without scooping dirt.
Curious as to how much air in the tires ? They looked pretty solid
I dont think he airs down on purpose
The stock tires don’t help. They’re designed for fuel economy with minimal off-road effects.
given that most people actually thinking of taking one on anything harder than a fire road will be putting more capable tires on, I think that's a warranted upgrade for your testing.
If I buy crosstrek I will raise a suspension by 2-3 inches and get the largest possible Bridgestone T/A KO2 tires with skid plates
Certainly don't believe the Subie struggled whatsoever.
Unfortunately, there is not a manual Transmition one.
It’s a shame they quit offering the Crosstrek with a manual!
Babe wake up Ryan made a new CTW video!
😂😅😂
I would love to see the Venza try this course.
Yet again, I want to see you doing this with your foot on the brake to see if it will transfer easier
Same. Everytime I see these wheels spinning, I wonder if just a bit of manual braking would get things moving.
When are u gonna review the new Santa Fe XRT off road?
I would watch a video of Ryan showing us how to do home renovation.
Very impressive and capable vehicle for not being 4WD!
The best ad for Subaru.
As opposed to their silly, non-convincing commercials.
3:42 - 2024* :)
Now I really want to see that Mazda Protege to run this course...
Nice work on the course.
The Subaru did great!
