The punchline to all this from Junior is great. I’m dying laughing!

I couldn’t exactly make out what he said. Anyone that would help me “get it” would be appreciated.

Junior said that Cale said, “Come on Junior, get out of this thing before it catches fire!”
Junior then stated that he said, calling from a distance, “Get over here where I’m at!”
Implying that he was already long out of the plane and far away from it.

Yarborough, Gant, Kulwicki, Earnhardt, Allison’s, Jarrett, Johnson, Baker, Elliot, Pearson, Parsons, Spencer, Rudd, Petty, Bonnett,Junior Johnson-these are the toughest and greatest of the old era grand national boys maybe because I can remember being glued to the T.V. As a kid watching them in the 70s. Waltrip would’ve been in my list, still mad at him for not sending a autograph pic lol, wrote to that sucker 5 times no response. All legends forever

    • @bigdave46148
      @bigdave46148 6 років тому +1

Was this while Waltrip was driving for Hendrick racing? If it was, that would be a Hendrick Motorsports policy not Waltrip ignoring you.
Many years ago when my boys were little and in Cub Scouts, the pack they were in went from one den with 4 kids in it to 3 dens with around 30 kids in one year. Because of the hard work the kids and the parents did in growing the pack, when it came time for the Pine Wood Derby, I had the idea of getting items from Nascar drivers and giving them to the kids. I wrote to I think every driver I could find an address for. I told them about the kids and how they got the pack to grow and how it would be cool to give the kids something from the drivers.
One of the things I got back was a letter from Hendrick Motorsports explaining that they do not send out things like autographed cards. All I wanted was a few cards from Terry Labonte and Jeff Gordon
A few days after that letter, we received a package from Bobby Labonte Racing that had autographed cards from both Bobby and Terry Labonte inside. Both my wife and I tried to figure out why we got Terry Labonte cards especially after the letter from Hendrick Motorsports.
My guess even to this day was, Terry stopped over at Bobby's race shop and Bobby was signing fan cards. Terry asked Bobby what he was doing and Bobby showed Terry my letter. Terry, after reading my letter, went out to his car, grabbed a few fan cards, signed them, and gave them to Bobby to include them in the package.

We’re probably around the same age because that was my childhood as well. Back when they called Waltrip “Jaws.” I love watching these old clips. The best childhood memories ever. Cale and Junior Johnson always had the best stories. I think that’s why I love listening to Dale Jr. tell stories about the good ol’ days. He was a huge Cale Yarborough fan back then as was my family. My little brother was named after Cale. RIP Cale Yarborough. You will forever be a legend and never forgotten. All of these men are legends and will never be forgotten.

In their day all most anyone could build a car and have a shot - Today it takes big, buck,s sad but that the way
it is. I remember buying all the books out on racing while in the service and thanking how ease it would be to have a team support bu the army kind of like the golden nights
your words have a ring of truth in then

Funny Story about Cale Yarborough, with a bit of self-reference: I grew up in Johnson City, TN, not too far from the garage of NASCAR veteran Herman "the Turtle" Beam. For a short time, Cale drove a car for Herman. After wrecking a couple of Herman's immaculately prepared cars, one night Herman lamented to local race driver Bill Morton that "Cale will never make it driving race cars."

Anyone who says there is NO such thing as luck, is wrong. Met many bad-luck fellows in the military, conversely ... met some who survived impossible scenarios. Luck, for lack of a better word, is real.

I remember, back in high school, a buddy that had a really neat 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe. He put a 331 Cadillac motor and a GM 4 speed hydro automatic transmissions modified by B & M Hydro in the car and it was fantastic. Give a bunch of money for that car today.

Modern Stock Car Racing has made significant technological advances in engine design/tuning and tires. This coupled with the sad proliferation of cookie cutter tracks has greatly diminished the value "experience" factor for both Crew Chiefs and Drivers alike. Boxing or baseball etc , the wily veteran can still compete, with his lost youthful exuberance and reflexes being compensated for by his knowledge and experience...No longer the case in Nascar. Give me N. Wilkesboro and a mix of young guns and old heros anyday...

Have you ever looked upon an Elder and with wonderment and respectful Awe as they effortlessly brush off experiences that would devastate the newer generations? Have you ever said to Yourself, "We sure don't make them Like that any more"..? Do You know Why We don't make them like that any more?..Because, We are Not Allowed to make them like that any more..
