A nice principal still fills the role of "principal," the guy whose job it is to tell teenagers not to touch each other. I don't see the point of commenting on his character, basically, when his job is actually what's determining his behavior.

He could've screamed and yelled at them, he could have punished everyone far more severely than just postponing a dance, he could have just not bothered to entertain them at all. Instead he was patient, listened to what they said, and made sure his rules were understandable. And he didn't immediately fly off the handle when it was clear they were playing up to the cameras. Some people do their jobs better than others. It appears as though that principal would be one that the students trust and respect, rather than fear or tolerate.
