Miss Orchid Girl here on UA-cam taught me how to grow orchids. I was given one from my partners nan's garden when she passed and I was desperate not to kill it. Now I rescue half dead orchids from the shops because it's easy.
I think people who says they "can't take care" of plants should just find a plant that suits them. For example, how frequent they would have time to water or care for the plant, how much lighting they have at the space they intent to put the plant, etc.
As a succulent-lover, the advice I would give is that they need a HECK ton of light to be compact like you were saying. However they are good if you are an under-waterer.
Becca, You wrote a book, learned how to use power tools an post hole diggers. Built a whole greenhouse!! I think you can grow anything you set your mind too! Lol Orchids would be good for you because they can bone dry an still be ok. I put Alocasias in soil an heavy pumice their doing fine. I suggest a Crocodile fern, so pretty an one yr it seems easy so far. 💚
You’re not alone! Succulents and I do NOT get along. I’ve tried everything everyone tells me to and have had zero success 😪 I’ve finally accepted that it’s not me, it’s them 😤 thank you for sharing another great video!
Orchids are so so so so much easier in my opinion than aroids! Perhaps to get through the bloom stage you need one with nice foliage. Check out some vanilla varieties
My orchids LOVE leca. I drill a hole 2” up from the bottom and only fill with water up to the drainage hole. The hole also helps to “flush” to remove collected salts. Also, I use glass containers. Goodwill always have glass containers.
And here I am feeling silly because I have a non-signed book 😅 anthurium also scare me... I've never had success with them. Love the openness in this video, Becca!
100% agree with succulents! I’ve always said they are actually NOT “easy”. 😂 It’s also funny because all the others ones you mentioned are also ones that intimidate me too lol
I have an Amydrium zippelianum and it's really easy going! It's in a very well draining soil mix, it gets quite a lot of light (east/south-east window) and it never throws a fit. It's also a pretty 'vocal' plant when it comes to watering. It does shoot out quite some runners, which is apparently an Amydrium thing, but other than that I really love growing that plant. I'd say go for it if you can find one :)
Certain fern are SO EASY and don't need a ton of water! I have a mounted fern wall and have Blue Star fern, Bird's nest fern, and another leafy boy I can't recall, and they only get watered in the shower once a week-ish. And my Rabbit's Foot fern I've had a month and have only watered it twice. I'm planning to plant some Hens and Chicks outside this year!
Rabbits foot fern is very easy care. You'd love my maiden hair, It's the bomb...no tips to give, it just seemed to land in a place that it loves...never had luck with them before. I don't do orchids either.
Jewel Orchids are so pretty and they are mostly apreciated for the foliage.I really love the Macodes Petola variety ! I wouldn't recommend Boston Ferns to anyone, they are so messy! Crocodile, Staghorn and the Asparagus ferns are the easiest in my oppinion. Especially the Asparagus Fern (not a true fern, but it looks like one) is the easiest in my oppinion, it can tolerate underwatering and different light condions. Anthurium and Alocasia stress me the most, too bad for me because they are my favorites🤣
I’m behind on your videos 😢 BUT hens and chicks overwinter in our zone! So if you wanna try a succulent for your outside beds I highly recommend! They make lovely ground cover!
I have an amydrium zippelianum under a grow light and I love it. It's been super easy to care for and scrambles everywhere which looks amazing imo. No spider mites yet... I've also had a true spidermite magnet, something in the hedera family, and that thing was coated within days after purchasing and immediately got thrown away.
Orchids are super easy! I actually started put with orchids before houseplants. I still have several. I also have a few in bloom right now! I'll have to tag you in a picture of my Orbifolia! It's so gorgeous right now! They love high light!
Oh, how I love my orchids and African Violets! (I wick my violets easy peasy) I have blooms all year long on one or the other and then there's the holiday cacti back n forth in bloom all winter too!!! Start with phalaenopsis orchids first.
Anthurium and Calathea are mine! I’ve never tried a single one of either of them. I do love the way Anthirium vitarifolium looks though. So if it becomes affordable, maybe I’d give it a shot.
I dont know how toexplain it but you kinda learn to like orchids when you get your first one. There is so many varieties. You gotta try it at least once trust me you wont regret it! Im not talking about grocery store kind of orchids but there is some unique wild ones out there! :)
tbh i prefer succulents to aroids, but aroids are just easier to grow in my climate. if you try succulents again, one thing I've learned is to check the leaves and not the soil. the easiest ones to start with are kalanchoes and aloes, idk if you like colours in them, but some of the variegated ones are quite pretty as well.
Good subject. I have never encountered it before. I agree about orchids. They are so exotic looking which makes them seem difficult to me. I got frustrated with one and put it in a terrarium. Couldn't believe it when it had multiple blooms on it. I am also afraid of killing my anthuriums. When the leaves get older mine are really ugly with yellow spots etc. The prices on some plants also make be afraid to try them.
Lots of ferns are definitely easier than calatheas. I water my staghorn fern way less than my aglaonemas and my maidenhair fern does great in spring and summer (as long as it gets enough light) and basically goes dormant in winter like my garden ferns. I’ve killed my fair share of ferns, but I don’t mind getting them basically as indoor annuals sometimes since they’re pretty and cheap.
I was afraid of ferns too, but I think they’re so lush and classic. I only have an austral gem fern and a kangaroo paw fern. The kangaroo paw can take brighter light and actually prefers to dry out. The austral gem is from a temperate climate so it doesn’t need so much humidity. I’ve also heard that the blue star is a more easy going fern
I was gifted a maidenhair over Christmas right as I was just starting to get into plants. It hasn’t died yet but I’ve found it pretty fussy and not so beginner friendly. I had to prune most of its foliage when I first brought it home, and it has pushed out a lot of new growth, but it’s all pretty sheer and starting to yellow 😢
Try putting it in a higher light position I have mine on a west window cill, and it's very dense. Also, consider investing in a filter. I use a brita filter to water my fern with and she thrives.
I used to be scared of orchids too; then my planty bff gave me my first Catleya (which is still alive), and then I managed to get some mini phals to rebloom and grow, so I got some more orchids and now I’m hooked! Lol
Orchids (especially the common ones) are pretty easy but you need to be patient! I am terrified of any kind of “string of” plants. Total mealybug magnets for me. And any kind of frilly fern.
i have two different amydrium, (one was a rescue on deaths door) and they are yet to have a pest. even when the philos around mine were infested with spider mites, neither of my amydriums caught them. they are strong little buggers.
I love how ferns grow and they are so nostalgic. I have a small maidenhair I love so much. It's definitely been a learning experience for me. It dried up to the point I thought it was dead but I heard someone say to cut back all the crispy leaves and it would grow back. And it did! 😁💚 Now if I could only figure out how to make a silver ribbon fern happy... 🤔🤷♀😂 Thanks for the Anthurium tip. I only have two but I want them to thrive. I'll certainly try sphagnum moss.👍 BTW, you look lovely in lavender! 💜😍
Amydrium are not much different care wise than a monstera or philodendron in my experience. The only difference is that if they don’t have support they send out runners which is annoying. But could be a good candidate for a plank 👀 Fern has a really pretty amydrium medium silver!
Same! I work at a plant store and we've carried a few amydrium in the past and they have been pretty easy care. I haven't brought one home yet but they behaved quite similar to those.plants or like a. Pedatoradiatum not so much an alocasia or a velvet anthurium. Give em a try!
For ferns I usually recommend ones in the davallia family or if they have those fuzzy rhizomes. Like the Blue Star is my favorite and it's been super chill. No crazy humidity and water every 7-10 days. They get so big and I'm a sucker for a silver blue color
I have a HUGE Aglaonema that’s 46 yrs old I rescued from a lady who was moving and she didn’t have the space for it and it scares me only because of the roots or I guess stems are HUGE lol so when I’m watering and caring for it I try and do it fast 😂 I have about 140 plants and that is the only one that scares me 😂😂
Succulents also scare me! As well as the monstera Thai constellation, the last one I had only lived a couple weeks in my care it arrived in shpag so I left it in there watered it one time after sphag had dried and the day the stem rotted
I love orchids but I underwater too much for significant flowering plants. My blooms do not last as long as they apparently should. But, it does re-bloom. 🤷🏼♀️
Only in terrariums can I get down with them, in a pot it's just ugly and boring as hell, but surrounded by moss and stuff it's so nice and actually doesn't croak lol
I have lose a lot of succulents too and that make feel bad about my plant care habits for a while. Now I still have some. There are not so great but I kind feel that we adapt so much into each other. 😂
To get an orchid to bloom again, I was told to put it in a colder area. I did that and have gotten my orchid, just a box store boring one, to rebloom 3 years in a row.

Idk why, but orchids for me die off in a week.

You could also check phalaenopsis schilleriana. She has beautiful leaves and is easy maintaining.

Thank you so much for your fun-loving content.
omggg what an interesting concept for a video! haha
love it, love you, you're killin it girl :)
The first thing to came to mind for me was orchids and I'm glad were on the same page! 🤣
😂😂
i have two different amydrium, (one was a rescue on deaths door) and they are yet to have a pest. even when the philos around mine were infested with spider mites, neither of my amydriums caught them. they are strong little buggers.
For a reblooming plant try a crown of thorns. They will even bloom all winter if they have lots of light.
I struggle with desert roses, sago palms, and ponytail palms. I killed them all!

I'm a pretty bad under-waterer. But, my Blue Star & Rabbit's Foot ferns keep on trucking
I tried one fern and gave it away within a month so until I can put it in a terrarium I will admire them from a far.
"But that doesn't mean I'm not afraid, like every single day"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I'm halfway through the vid and I'm the same way with orchids ferns and anthuriums
I’m afraid of Begonia for some reason. I imagine the maculata can’t be that bad since they are in so many stores, but they still just intimidate me!
Saaame. I had a Rex Begonia that died a slow death early in my plant journey and I’ve steered clear of them since lol.

I’ve also killed a ridiculous amount of succulents. I don’t buy them because I think they are the HARDEST plant to keep alive. Lol
@@BeccaDeLaPlants Putting the orchids in a cooler area definitely works!

Around the base of the stem - where the stem meets the soil/new leaves emerge etc
I also can't keep succulents alive 🤔 and they literally hate me. Only tropics for me.
