Did not know this . VGBA is no doubt set up for a very good reason . Happy to learn this Steve . As someone who works with steam pipes, condensation returns , wet and dry loops . Im gonna say the floor drain's may not work for thermal draw, or better distribution of heated ret. water. But 😂 but i would say they probably work better in distribution of chemical treatment of pools . Seeing how most chemicals are heavier than water so they may drop to bottom of pool faster ? Idk just trying to make my case for bottom suction drains . As you say lots of newer models of pools are omitting these drains now , but i feel that to be a disadvantage. As always another relevant topic for us . Always enjoy your posts as do many . Thanks
My 20k vinyl liner pool has one main drain that is piped individually to the pump and I have 2 skimmers. The main drain does have a VGBA compliant cover. Is there anything I could or should be doing to make it safer?
I think that a robotic cleaner helps way more than a main drain ever could (in terms of circulating water). I still like to see a main drain on pools, helps with service and brushing especially on newly plastered.
There is no substitute for dual main drains or A&A channel drain in a pool with 2 skimmers. You can select 100% floor or 100% skim or the perfect mix from the 3 way valve in the suction line of the pump. Robot pool cleaners allow horribly designed pools to look clean.

My OCD will not allow me to build a pool without proper floor drainage. You can sweep shit down there and you can empty the pool effortlessly.
I remember playing over the drain in my city’s kiddie pool. I was maybe 6, around 1976. I had no clue how dangerous this could have been!
Makes so much sense. Thanks!
