New Zealand's issue is trying to get proper friendlies during international windows. Tough to convince any decent nation to travel that far for a match. A windows they could have is in September where Canada, Mexico & USA have no viable friendly options than themselves, so NZ playing two of those nations is a starting point. There is zero sense in leaving the OFC because they get a nearly guaranteed spot in every FIFA tournament & the Olympics.
I have experience as new zealand manager and you can convince some sides to turn up for friendlies mostly in Asia but I have done trips mainly to scout our opposition for world cups we went to Ireland, Andorra, Gibraltar, Belarus, England, USA ect. qualifying is a cake walk in OFC like I battered Samoa and cook islands like 10-0 every match.
the problem for NZ is the fact that they have a celing set on them when they are in OFC. Look at what Australia have done. they have still made every world cup since moving to AFC and the infrastructure has gotten significantly better and its only possible by them moving to AFC. Do you really think the NZ football infrastructure is going to get better by staying in OFC? and by playing harder teams, it gives your players much more experience then just betting every team 10-0.

Oh woah! Hello. Appreciate you guys watching. Hopefully I can see you guys live in action one day at Lawson Tama Stadium, that would be awesome. Up the OFC! 👏
I currently live in Vanuatu, and whenever the All Whites come to town, everyone shows up and supports them, but everyone knows what will happen. The lack of development compared to NZ is frustrating. Also, knowing that NZ will get knocked out in group play is even more depressing because the opportunity could belong to a different but deserving third-world country. The World-Class, Homegrown talent named Brian Kaltak is not in Vanuatu as he is finding success in the A-Leagues, but the facilities he has in AU are only a dream for Vanuatu. FIFA President came through Vanuatu a few years ago, which was great, but not much seems to have happened since the visit.
Came across this video just now and found it incredibly interesting. I've been following football in Oceania for a while now and never knew about a potential Oceanian Pro League! Would be very interesting to see. Great vid though, looked at your channel and loving all the Oceanian football content!
Honestly, Oceania should create a new confederation with East Asia, Southeast Asia and some minor Asian nations. Call it the Pacific Association Football Nations. Let the island nations play Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Laos
Splitting the Asian confederation into an Eastern and Western zone is something that's been brewing for a while. Personally, I hope Oceania can establish its own solid identity. Thanks for watching mate!
@@SAMUTHESAMBABALL Oceania will never agree to join Asia, because they'll all be ranked 3rd tier except New Zealand, who may sneak into tier 2 within Asia.
Being from New Zealand, as far as I am aware New Zealand are interested in joining AFC, however, AFC aren't interested in having us because of the travel distances. This was a sticky point when Australia joined AFC but they eventually got it over the line, but NZ is that little bit further away.
I mean, if Football Manager is to be believed, you earn more money for losing in the first round of UEFA Conference League qualifying than you do for winning the entire OFC Champions League...
Thank you for highlighting the issues OFC face. I would like to think that the OFC is sustainable, football is hugely popular in Vanuatu, The Solomon islands, Fiji, and Tahiti. New Zealand is benefiting by having more and more of its top players exposed to European competition, and the A League, and that is showing in current rankings. The difficulty is getting regular international competition to Oceania, I think that FIFA have a lot to answer for, the pace and change to the game is such, that smaller nations are being left behind.
Great video, will be very interesting to see the impact the new club World Cup has on OFC club football progression, and whether it aids it or just makes it more uncompetitive with Auckland City only strengthening their position
The plan has moved around a bit since it was announced in 2019. They're still not sure if it will be brand new teams, teams that represent one whole island or existing teams. It will probably end up being a mixture of everything and they've even gone so far as asking for expressions of interest from Australian clubs as well. The teams that play in the OFC Champions League will make up a big part I think.
I expect not. OFC are often trying not to have their competitions dominated by New Zealand teams (which is why just one qualifies who always win) and I can't see there being much interest. Recently they were talking to Australian NPL teams for some reason. I struggle to see it succeeding.
New Zealand and Australia could become great places for the rest of Oceania to develop their footballing youths in. We already see it with both rugby union and rugby league, they are and should be athletic hubs for the entirety of the Pacific. Definitely the best example of a non-Australia youth being developed in Australia (although playing for them on the senior level later) has to be literal Tim Cahill, there's a lot of athletic talent in Oceania. I really want to see where the OFC heads into in the future and isn't just a guarantee spot for New Zealand to qualify for the World Cups
@@evoids I think that they could survive, or at the very least be competitive. The real issue is the amount of money being poured into the game by many AFC nations. NZ have played a number of AFC nations in the past, and accounted for themselves quite well.
As a Kiwi, I find Oceania ridiculous. It shouldn't exist. Australia left years ago and now New Zealand play against weak opposition. Sorry, just telling it like it is. Oceania should be absorbed into the AFC. That would be great for all of the teams. New Zealand actually have some very decent players, but without good competition, no athlete can improve.
Regional qualifiers, I think someone said 4 regions above and then top seeds get a bye into the final qualifications groups, but smaller nations don't have to travel too far unless they are good enough.
as Indonesian, I think it's best to separate Asia into 2 federations, I want east asia, sout east asia, and south asia to form their own federation (maybe add oceania), asia is to big but underdeveloped, and AFC simply doesn't care about football development, they care only for money.
If they could find a way for Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC allow to compete and qualify for the AFC club competitions could help. As these clubs are in the A League, technically is possible like Swansea but the fact NZ still OFC can’t be done. So both confederations myst negotiate.
@Someone23453 They would probably face clubs from Korea,China,Japan and SE Asia in the group stage as geographical conferences (East and West Asia) apply..If ever NZ joins AFC.
Asian Football Confederation should do this for future AFC Champions League seasons. 1) West Asia/Central Asia 2) South Asia 3) East Asia/Southeast Asia 4) Oceania
Thanks for making this video. Big NZF fan here. We desperately need to escape OFC. It renders the entire national team program almost meaningless. We play a handful of meaningful games every 4 years and the qualifiers aren’t even home and away. The world cup is well and good but ongoing competitive (home) games in say AFC would do much more for the game in NZ.
In my mind the main motivation for New Zealand moving to the AFC would be to improve the quality of our game. It would allow the All Whites to compete at AFC Nations level and our two teams in the A-League to make Club World Cup. We can qualify for the FIFA World Cup by doing no work and get knocked out in the group stage or work hard and deserve to make playoffs
I was at Waikato Stadium for All Whites vs Vanuatu, I was shocked at how full the stands were tbh, almost 11 thousand, just under half full was a lot more than I was thinking would be there
@bazookacantgame exactly. Super rugby needs to go. Bin it. Need a two tier comp with promotion and relagation. ATM were I live is a massive province with one game every 2 years. It's seriously shit.
I heard plans to include OFC into AFC then split it into east and west until the final round of qualifying. The teams in OFC would be competitive in the 1st round and Australia was drawn into the same group as Lebanon and Bangladesh which are ranked 112 and 185. So I could see some teams even make it through to the 3rd round of qualifying
I would love to see an "Oceania" team in the A-League, similar to Moana Pasifika in the Super Rugby comp that was based in NZ. This would give the best players from the small nations good facilities, coaching and competition to help them develop. I also think NZ football would benefit from joining AFC
OFC team might be a bit much but letting them count as non-foreign for the two Kiwi teams would make a difference. I'm just not sure there is enough quality to build a team as currently only 4 players from the Pacific Nations have played in the A-League (plus few more with partial ancestry).
It's an interesting idea. I'm not sure if Moana Pasifika can be considered a success story though, they've had a lot of issues. Where would an Oceania team be based out of?
Honestly ofc should of been merged into Asia confederation back when Australia played for them the fact that they have to go through the south American behemoth.
I've been subbed since around 800 something and I would like a video (you dont have to make it) talking about the clubs that have been merged in the a league or make a video about the downfall of the NSL
i honestly dont understand why the OFC and AFC dont just have a merger. even if it was the OFC + southeast asia it would give ofc nations a much needed boost. its done very well in CONCACAF with the pacific island nations like Jamaica and cuba so why couldnt it be done by OFC?
I played as new caledonia on the 2010 world cup game on ps3 and won the world cup with them. Ever since I've then I've wanted to visit Oceania countries and see football matches there

As a saff member i wish to play oceania should collab with saff and should create a yearly competition like nation league and should gain popularity and money with it
I feel like the right thing to do is merge AFC and OFC, but the thing is, I just like the concept of 6 continental federations; 6 continental trophies, all continents qualifying for the WC. I don’t want it to be 5, and then 4 if South America and north become as one. Maybe to fix the issue, keep the OFC nations cup, but grant the winner direct qualification to the World Cup? I love the way everything is set up rn, how all 6 continents (but Antarctica) are federations and have governing bodies and teams, it will be weird for that all to disappear with the history when they merge. The Americas make sense to merge because they are one big continent. Idk if you get my rambling but the right thing is to merge them, but I just love the 6 continental system. If they merge, it would be sad to see it disappear. It also makes sense culturally cause the pacific nations are culturally close to the eastern Asian nations and islands, but it would just be a little weird to see OFC gone. Maybe a partnership, but a full merge I wouldn’t support, they should have a partnership, like OFC teams allowed to compete in Asian competitions like AFC Asian cup and the ACL Elite, but not a full merge where they are under 1 body. This would allow the WC qualifying to be separate but the continental competitions would be conjoined.
The only way that Oceania is going to grow as a footballing continent is the way that it’s happening now. Having two members in the World Cup every four years will push that development. Look at the United States in 1996. A chance the way people thought about football here. It took a while, but the kind of spotlight will help Oceana.
you say samoa are amateurs, but when nz went to the 2010 world cup, at least 4 players were in amateur league clubs, and Arron Barron, worked full time as a banker when the world cup happened. Also we will never move to AFC. we dont quit things we start like the aussies do
Is Auckland city really getting $50 million for participating Oceania in the Club World Cup ( That what I've heard about club will get). That is an astronomical amount of money, where is it all gonna go?
One thing AFC should do is at least give New Zealand teams to play the Asian Champiosn League the teams that play in A-League, it is not like Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC will be playing in OFC Champions League other wise so it is dumb they do not let them play in that tournament when they reach the top on that league.
The disparity between New Zealand and the rest is just too great, they have to join Asia which will allow them to play genuinely competitive international football through the whole 4 year cycle. They won't though, because the promise of a World Cup spot every 4 years (and accompanying $) is too much incentive to stay put in football purgatory. I think the best solution is to have New Zealand join Asia as a full member, then have the remaining Oceania teams as associate members of either Asia or South America. This would mean the winner of the Oceania Nations Cup would be granted a spot in the Asian Cup or Copa America, in addition to a World Cup spot. FIFA should also fully fund the OFC Pro League to enable the region to grow instead of funnelling millions into the pockets of its board members. The other solution would be to break up AFC, but I think that would be unattractive to powerbrokers who would see it as diluting their influence.
They have, but they need the preparation time for their debut season over in Scotland...Go go New Caledonia Thistle....Bye bye Inverness. Can't wait 😉🤫🙃
Oceania is sad victim of its own geography. A pro league sounds great, but I think it will need a lot of money to keep it going. I hope they can find it without selling out.
I think given Asia's clear divide into east and west, with AFC often given the nickname Arab Football Confederation, I think a split where OFC joins east Asia into forming 1 confederation where the pacific islands get to play the likes of Macau, Guam, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste would do them a world of good
Australia. They have to come back. Like how could they Even leave their Confederation... aren't these things done by Geographical Location so y will FIFA, AFC and mostly the OFC approve of the going to another continent... and for what for more Competition... Australia was always a world level Team they didn't need any changes to prove it.... They won the AFC Nations Cup... so they leaving the OFC didn't change anything other than the fact that they weakened the entire OFC. Imagine JAPAN or SOUTH KOREAN let AFC to UEFA 😒. The surcaros need to come back to Their Continent.... THEY WERE THE OFC
Kzahkstan and Israel don't play in their continent FIFA league and a couple of South and North America ones play in opposite ones, if Australia returned to OFC every match would be that one famous game of 31-0 against America Samoa...it made sense to move leagues
No it won't. And it wasn't against Samoa...it was against America Samoa a team that Samoa can beat 5 to 7 Neil. That team played against Not New Zealand but Australia... are you seriously kidding me... of course the score line will be that outrageous
It's not only world cups mate we get grantee spots for. It's under 20 world cup and olympics. Losing those devoplemnt path ways for our young players will make us weaker.
Why not put NZ in South or Central America confederations? Itll raise the standard of play, make it both easier & more appealing for Europe + UK based players to join up with the national squad. If Israel can be a "European" country, NZ can be a "South American" one..
The should just combine all the island nations and call it the Pacific Islands Team. Those tiny countries are just too small and soccer is not engrained in the culture.
OFC's problem is the countries are so poor, isolated and tiny populations that theyre never going to be competitive If New Zealand cant have a viable professional league within 1 country, how would one spanning thousands of km across the pacific be viable

Here's the thing we all know NZ are just batter everyone and make every world Cup the other nations can't keep up with them because of there league, funding ect. New Zealand have 2 clubs in the A league Auckland FC, Wellington phoenix who are improving there youth development most NZ young talent prefer these A league clubs or even Auckland City.
My idea is to rearrange the confederations: 1. Sub-sahara africa: all africa except north africa 2. Arabs (they already have arabs cup): north africa and west asia 3. Asia pacific: East and central asia, and oceania
Aust left and went to the asian bloc. They said it gave their teams more access to higher rated teams and more regular matches. Whilst they have benefitted its been an own goal for FIFA and shouldnt have been allowed. Oceania should not include arabian teams, geographically on the other side of the world. All about money and has given those wealthy nations from there an easier path. A mess they created.
With Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix as the 2 greatest clubs from Oceania (unincluding Auckland City)... surely more funding has gotta be put into our international team... let's hope we qualify for the world cup and cam get outta the groups. Last world cup qualifying was a disaster for us, shoulda beat Costa Rica, also feel like New Zealand has outgrown the island nations, 7-1 or whatever against the closest competitor is terrible... get South east Asia to split from central Asia n get nz and Aussie in that one
There is talent in Oceania beyond New Zealand, look at really good players like Fiji's Roy Krishna, or Solomon Islands Benjamin Totori. Even players like Christian Karembu, from New Caledonia, but played for France. The OFC might be the weakest confederation, but money, opportunities, and time will make a difference.

This would allow the WC qualifying to be separate but the continental competitions would be conjoined.
amazing video and thumbnail man
The only way that Oceania is going to grow as a footballing continent is the way that it’s happening now. Having two members in the World Cup every four years will push that development. Look at the United States in 1996. A chance the way people thought about football here. It took a while, but the kind of spotlight will help Oceana.
OFC pro league sounds promising 🎉🎉🎉

you say samoa are amateurs, but when nz went to the 2010 world cup, at least 4 players were in amateur league clubs, and Arron Barron, worked full time as a banker when the world cup happened.
I thought New Caledonia pulled out
They have, but they need the preparation time for their debut season over in Scotland...Go go New Caledonia Thistle....Bye bye Inverness. Can't wait 😉🤫🙃
@ huh
nz shouldn't complain.. making it to the world cup due to weak opponents.. is a luxury
Oceania is sad victim of its own geography.
A pro league sounds great, but I think it will need a lot of money to keep it going. I hope they can find it without selling out.
I think given Asia's clear divide into east and west, with AFC often given the nickname Arab Football Confederation, I think a split where OFC joins east Asia into forming 1 confederation where the pacific islands get to play the likes of Macau, Guam, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste would do them a world of good
come to Asia, you deserve it NZ
New Zealand would be better off joining the Asian Federation or they just absorb that federation and let Concacaf have the pacific islands? I dunno?
NZ -> AFC
Guam, NMariana islands -> OFC
can only work this way, otherwise its just a guaranteed spot for NZ each WC
It's not only world cups mate we get grantee spots for. It's under 20 world cup and olympics. Losing those devoplemnt path ways for our young players will make us weaker.
Kiribati is red as Kiribas
Bro I went to the 8-1 vanuatu match
Why not put NZ in South or Central America confederations? Itll raise the standard of play, make it both easier & more appealing for Europe + UK based players to join up with the national squad. If Israel can be a "European" country, NZ can be a "South American" one..
The should just combine all the island nations and call it the Pacific Islands Team. Those tiny countries are just too small and soccer is not engrained in the culture.
OFC's problem is the countries are so poor, isolated and tiny populations that theyre never going to be competitive
If New Zealand cant have a viable professional league within 1 country, how would one spanning thousands of km across the pacific be viable

My idea is to rearrange the confederations:
1. Sub-sahara africa: all africa except north africa
2. Arabs (they already have arabs cup): north africa and west asia
3. Asia pacific: East and central asia, and oceania
What about Australia?
New Zealand needs to join ASIA like Australia did itll improve there team
There is talent in Oceania beyond New Zealand, look at really good players like Fiji's Roy Krishna, or Solomon Islands Benjamin Totori. Even players like Christian Karembu, from New Caledonia, but played for France. The OFC might be the weakest confederation, but money, opportunities, and time will make a difference.
Laurent Robert was born on Saint Maarten or reunion as well
Football in Oceania means Rugby Football
28,000 just watched Auckland F.C. vs Wellington Phoenix.
