Right elbow tucked in golf swing

- Forcing your trailing arm to tuck in your golf swing is not natural, nor is it necessary. If you move correctly, your trailing elbow will naturally fold correctly.

I've made a series of changes to my swing over the last few years. The latest one: trail elbow tucked in, never separating from my torso until approaching impact. My lead arm barely reaches parallel to the ground at the top of the backswing. By the way, I'm very flexible, so that wasn't an issue. I used to carry my 7 iron 150 yards. I now carry my PW 145. Granted, that wasn't the only change that took me there. But the tucked trail elbow placed me in a very powerful position from which I also gained more distance and center-face consistency. I can just rip it from there. I don't say everyone should swing like me. Nor should anyone else say that nobody should tuck their right elbow. If I had listened advice like this, I'd still be approaching greens with 7 or 8 irons instead of wedges.
I keep my right elbow tucked to my hip pretty much until the point of release on the follow through and it's improved my game big time , sure it's made my backswing shorter but it hasn't effected power and it's completely stopped me from slicing the ball
Sounds like a great outcome for you even if it restricting your backswing a little. If you’re hitting straighter then it should be helping your scoring.
Thank you for a great drill.
Good one Peter. I think you've made a couple of videos to emphasise this point and it can't be said enough. Tucking in the right elbow on the downswing makes so much difference. One more thing perhaps not said enough, I think, is limiting pronation of the left wrist. That one move fixes a lot of faults with upswing.
What happened to the drill where you imagine there's a towel under your right arm bit and it shouldn't fall out. That's elbow tucked in. So many differing instructions confuses the shit out of me...
I totally understand your confusion. Think of the towel drill as only applying to short swings, ie your hands don’t go higher than chest height. For full swings your right arm will naturally come away from your side. Hope that helps clear things up.
Interesting, but not tucking in the elbow to some extent during the backswing will lead to inconsistency and maybe the reason for coming over the top ,result the dreaded slice .
I’m finding the right elbow changes the plane of my swing. Out is steep, pointing to the ground is flatter or on plane
It’s meant to not make you come over the top
I think early extension is the killer of a bent right elbow too. The body needs to give the elbow space to come through unfortunately as I’m finding out.
Definitely. If the upper body lifts, the right arm has to straighten.
hi my friend. iam Phuc from Viet Nam have a good day.
Not sure what I’m doing wrong but when I do the right hand drill, the ball goes directly to the right. Then when I swing with both hands it completely messes up my swing and everything is shanked to the right. I know I need to lead with the trail elbow to get more power and prevent releasing the club too early, but I just cannot lead with trail elbow without shanking the ball. Help!!! Thanks Peter.
Sounds like you might be trying to force the elbow to lead. It should be a reasonably soft and natural movement, even if it doesn’t seem natural to begin with.
Thanks Peter. That’s very helpful. It’s starting to come around nicely now. I will stick with it. Thanks for your prompt reply and the original video on UA-cam.
Ben Hogan would have something to say about this
