Thank you for watching William and especially for subscribing, and for your very kind comment. I hope you will enjoy some of the other videos too. I'm on Zephyr IV for a few days starting the maintenance ready for the coming season. More sailing and more videos :-)
Hi Paul, thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it. And good luck with the sailing. I'm hoping for a few more years yet and I hope you get a good few too. Let me know how you get on 🙂
Hi Jean, thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it, it makes all the editing worthwhile. If you can spare a minute, please subscribe and check out my other videos. I'm sure you'll find some of those entertaining too.
Hi Chris, it's grown on me, I wasn't sure when I first tried it but it sort of hints at the calm weather but with a trace of the apprehension, that I was feeling. Glad you liked it :-)
Wonderful and exciting that you’re going to visit or pass Salcombe, our first family holiday back in 1958. It was charming then and hopefully it has survived the onslaught of the invincible British tourist.
Hi Sally, I spent a couple of days hunkered down, right up the river. It was very busy so once I found a mooring I stayed there and rested. It's a very big harbour :-)
First time watching, lovely video and helpful info too. Sailed down that way a lot in the past and longing to get down there again, hopefully in 2023. Stay safe and I’ll watch your other videos. Andy UK
Hi Andy, So glad you enjoyed it, I've done quite a few vids now, hope you enjoy those too. I sailed a lot of that coast when I was in my 20's and 30's so it was good to revisit, but it is so much busier now than in the 60's 70's and 80's. Hope you get to go to sea next year and thanks for watching. If you could subscribe and like I would consider it a great favour. Fair Winds ... Dave
Hi William, It was nice to meet you too. Glad you enjoyed the videos. There are mor eto come, please subscribe if you can find a minute, then you'll find out about the new uploads..
Beautiful video, nice sailing, love the musical bits too. Thanks for including maps/chart views of your travel, for an Aussie it helps get the orientation correct.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I started putting the chart shots in when I realised how far round the world the videos had travelled. I'll think of you when I decide which bit needs a chart shot :-)
A very enjoyable video again, Dave. Brought back memories of my sailing days along the same stretch of the west country coastline, especially rounding the Bill and getting it slightly wrong once!! It was a nightmare that was never repeated! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Richard, so glad you enjoyed it. Whilst I was going round Portland a few years ago, a large motor boat ventured into the very obvious race. He was a long time getting back out, tossed around like a plastic duck in a bath. I'm sure he would never chance his luck again. It's so deceptive when you see it at the right time and the right weather, really nothing to worry about but it doesn't take much to really wind it up.
Beeing a UA-cam creator my self I know how much time and effort it goes into making these videos. And the end result of your efforts has been a pleasure to watch. I myself create my videos along the Norwegian coast, and I figure it's gonna take me quite some time to finish the Norwegian coast line, so im not convinced I I'll get to visit your coastline anytime soon, so therefore I find your videos rather useful. So if I won't be able to go there, I still get to see bits of it. Thank you so much for sharing. I took your advice and hit the subscribe button not to miss out. Best regards from Jarle
Hi Jarle, thank you so much for your comment. Yes the videos do take a long time to edit. But I quite enjoy it and love watching the end result. It's lovely to get so many comments and I feel like I'm gaining new friends every day. I love my sailing and it's just so nice to share it in this way. Like you I've benefitted from other peoples videos and it will help when I venture further from my home port. Thank you so much for subscribing. I'll check out your videos too .. Dave
Excellent couple of videos Dave. Very informative about the south coast, conditions and general boat chat. I’m a south coast sailor myself and it’s lovely to see the scenic west coast from the sea. Very much look forward to your next video traveling further west 👍
Thanks Mike so glad you enjoyed it. I'll be starting on part 3 later and hope to get it published by the end of the week. I was very lucky with the weather.
Wonderful channel that I have just discovered (and subscribed) - thank you I did the reverse journey last summer as crew in a friend's Westerley Sealord. As a beginner single handed sailor myself, it would be wonderful, though possibly difficult, if you could set up the camera in a way that you can continue to record when doing the more difficult things for single handers like reefing, spinnaker use if you use one, as well as picking up a mooring buoy, docking, anchoring etc. Thanks
Hi Greg, really pleased to have you subscribe. As you know it's not easy doing all the sailing stuff and taking video. The videoing almost always happens when you've finally got everything sorted and slumped onto the cockpit seat :-) However I have got another camera with a wider angle lens this year and a couple of clever clamping things so I can mount a camera on the pulpit or pushpit. So there's hope that I'll be able to show you a bit more of the other and more difficult bits of sailing. My advice to you with things like anchoring or picking up buoys, is always have an escape route and if you don't think you're going to pick it up, just go round and have another go. I'll keep you in mind with this next seasons videos.. Best Wishes Dave
@@davesailing Thank you. I do understand the challenge of filming during the moments when your priorities are elsewhere. If you can mount a camera, that would be great. It's always good to see how other sailors do things even if it's not a 'tutorial'.
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the compliment about the voice, a gift from my dad I guess. I have an Avon inflatable dinghy and I can row ashore, but I'm very lazy and don't inflate it very often. A lot of harbours now have a floating taxi service that will collect you from the boat and return you when you need to go back. Later in the trip I inflated the dinghy and had it strapped across the transom. You'll have to wait a bit to see that. If you haven't subscribed yet, please do, and press the bell thingy to get an email when I upload the next episode.
Great video Dave, really fine edit and I like the chart overlays. Need to talk to you about how you pick up these moorings single handed. The clip of you playing the melodeon in the morning sun is one of the best little vignettes I’ve seen on a sailing video. Travel safe.
Ah! the mooring buoys. Getting the boat alongside the buoy is not too difficult. Especially if you factor in the fact that you might fail the first time and have to go round again. The buoys with a little pick up buoy are fairly easy. The trick is not to try and get the boathook in the handle of the little buoy but grab the rope in between. The difficult ones are those with just an eye at the top of the buoy. I can usually get hold of that with a boat hook but getting the end of the rope through the eye and back to the boat is not easy. I usually end up laying on the deck amidships and trying to hold the boathook with the buoy with one hand while I poke the end of the rope through the eye with the other and without getting a hernia. There's a gadget around that does it for you and I think before I venture forth next year I'll buy one of those. So glad you enjoyed the video, it makes the hours of work worth while.
The only bit that's mine is the bit where I play my melodeon. There is lots of free music available on the web. I spend whole evenings trawling through it to find clips that I like and might fit a future video. Putting the music on is probably my favourite part, it can change a relatively ordinary sequence into something quite special. I'm glad you like my choices. If you haven't subscribed yet, please do. There's another episode on the way.
I pumped the inflatable up and had a pint in cockwood you can get under the train tracks in to the little harbour lots of signs saying private harbour but no one chased me away
Ok Ken, maybe next year I'll invest in an electric outboard and a bracket for my Avon. Not a great fan of rowing inflatables but a little outboard would be good. Part 3 is complete, will be uploading it tomorrow.
Thanks for the upload and the time it takes to edit it all. Really like your content and no doubt you will get many more subs and views soon to. You and Michael from Sailing Gently should take a sail together ...check his channel out ..he is a fantastic guy. Hopefully you get some warmer weather over the horizon for you to head off into ...all the best kidda.
Yes I've watched most of Michael's videos, I guess he and I have similar ideas but he's sailed quite a lot further than I have. Just planning the winter jobs for Zephyr IV now, but hopefully I'll get a few days sailing in before it gets too cold. Thanks so much for watching - good to hear from you 🙂
Thank you for sharing. I really enjoy listening to your wonderful commentary along the way.

Another nice one Dave. As others have said, the music is well chosen. I particularly like the cool guitar as you're going round Portland Bill.
