I'm a reasonably advanced guitarist (59 years old, playing since 9) but I find your stuff amazing as a quick "how to" guide to grow my solo repertoire... I love your work. Thank you and keep it up.
Why is it that some a**holes have to make negative comments about a guy who helps us learn guitar. Justin knows he can't sing good, but thats not what his lessons are about, they're about LEARNING THE GUITAR!!!! Leave the guy alone man. Keep the lessons coming Justin, you rock.
Justin, just read some of the negative comments on here. What a bunch of w*nkers! Don't pay any attention to them. You are the best guitar teacher on youtube and I have learned a load of stuff from you. The fact that you don't charge for your lessons is even more incredible. You are the man!
I remember before one year ago, I just bought the guitar and I tried to looked up lessons on youtube because I'm not gonna have a real teacher. And now I'm very happy with the progress I did with you as a teacher! Thank you Justin, now I can play this song, I can play bar chords and my changing in progress. Thank you again Justin, I will never forget that you're the best teacher I ever had.
As a beginner this is probably one of the best tutorial channels. Many kind of skip over the actual fret/string positions when breaking down songs and just give the chord and move too fast for us noobs. Love this song and can't wait to try it!
Thats one of the rare songs about inner pain that is so well done, it can literally make you "hurt". Given Johnny Cash's (other) recordings through his career I can see how he would choose to record it. Awesome. Thanks Justin!
I came across this vid by accident. I'm 40 years old with no guitar playing experience. But I have my grandfathers guitar that I've held onto for 28 years and you my friend with this one song have inspired me to finally take it out and learn to play. thank you sir. I'm no quitter and hope you'll wish me luck on this new journey for an old man.
@hidden solace not as much as I wish I could. Still enjoy playing the handful of songs I've learned. And still very much a "beginner" in talent and ability. But I get the guitar out every couple of months when I've got a day off and the house is quiet and I can play without bothering anyone and just enjoy the music.
@hidden solace you can't go wrong with Justin here... he's amazing. He's got easy to advanced lessons and all of them are fantastic! I'm not an expert by any stretch of the word, but the few songs I can now play well and make me feel like I've actually accomplished something are all from his lessons. I hope your journey is as fun and rewarding as mine has been!
Started learning this at midnight, woke my brother up, he asked me what the hell I was doing, played him the chorus, instead of kicking off he told me to keep practicing until I got it right even until the early hours purely because this song is so awesome. Thankyou Justin!
I bought my first guitar last week and none of the other youtube instructors have really helped me,but I managed to get the hang of this in about half an hour so thanks, i'll be watching more of your videos :)
First off, great job on this! Your instructions are among the very best I've seen. About the advanced "D" you speak of... it has many different names based on the order in which the strings are played. If you strum straight down or pick down this would be a D-9 sus 4th (in theory). x-D-F#-G-D-E. It's a suspended 4th because the "G" note occurs right next to or after the "F#" in the scale you are playing. It's a D-9 because you catch the open "E" on string 1 which is slighter higher in the scale then the "D" on string 2; making it the ninth note of the scale you are playing... just in case you or anyone else is wondering what it's "technical" name is and why.
justinguitar is the best! this video is one of the best beginner tunes in my opinion because its easy to sing along and sound pretty good as a beginner.
I've learnt a hell of a lot from some of your video's in the past Justin, your an exellent teacher and decent feller for doing all this for free. Cheers.
Justin your voice is beautiful. Not only are you a great teacher, you can sing and play guitar. I really want to learn Strawberry fields forever, if you know it. Am on stage 4 in your course. Like many others I lost my job, and your course is helping me fill the days, and keep my mind off my problems. Thanks again for everything. God bless.
Wow, I've been playing it Am-C-D this whole time. Am-C-C on 3rd fret (what's this chord called anyway) sounds much better and is a little easier. Thanks!
Marty needs to get a bit more accurate before that happens. Some of his stuff ok to pass off in a bar in a working band but not really close enough to teach.
I cant tell you how much Im grateful you've done this lesson. Im beginner level but when I tryed fist time this song it was soo easy. Great teacher indeed. :)
Thanks J....Johnny Cash is a legend, and when I first heard this song I couldn't believe how well he covered a NIN song. But thanks again man for all the long hours you put in to help all of us
I've been stuck on the transition from c to d all day..I'm used to be able to play pretty well but stopped for years when my grandpa(teacher) got sick and this is what I'm trying. When you started singing I started tearing up because yall sound alike. Thanks for this
I came to You Tube to Learn this Song & when I seen You Covered it. Well,Here I am.First Choice.Great Lesson Justin.Man,I Will Donate. I Swear. Just for the Time & Effort that You put into these Video's for US.Thank's Again. ♫
Justin - ignore the haters. You are providing excellent FREE lessons for beginners like me. The people making negative comments are morons that need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves why they are such cowards. Keep up the good work, much appreciation.
awesome stuff, many thx. Ordered your songbook as soon as I heard about it. Learning to play fairly simple yet great songs like this really gives me a much needed extra boost to keep going and finally move from beginner to intermediate :)
Hey Justin,I just watched Hallelujah lesson,I Never heard such a beautiful song and you nailed it!! If i learn no other song's i will learn that one for sure, thank's brother awesome job.
Thank you sooo much my friend..I was about to give up my guitar(i'm a newby).I coudnt play anything except from some intros. And then you gave me reason to struggle even more!!!Thank you so much! You are an excellent teacher.I would like to ask you if you can give us a lesson about the "Redemption day" of mr.Cash...Greetings from Greece!!!!
Very nice Justin...however for anyone who might want to try, instead of a standard A-minor in the chorus, try this instead... 0-0-2-2-3-3 Not even sure what this chord is but it is what he plays on the record.
Hey dude you have really helped me a lot don't listen to any of the negative crap from anybody ,a least your trying to help the ones that want to learn , keep it up!!!!!!!
Excellent I would be so lost without your videos. You are really helpful, and help me to keep practicing, even when I feel like taking a jack hammer to my guitar, cause I feel like a total failure. Thanks!
I love how you smile and say "hey! Justin here!" after every thing, like if you played something sad, it doesn't matter, if you played some fast awesome metallic lick it's nothing :)
These are excellent lessons, Justin. Bravo. Been watching a bunch of them and I'm very impressed. Very good pacing and good mix of focus on tricky riffs and then putting it back in the song context. Working my way through your Sultans of Swing now... doing this one as a little break :-) Thanks tons for making these.
So everybody that is learning a lot of stuff from his lessons - When you grow up and have a huge reputation as a musician - GIVE SOME CREDIT to Justin ... One day if I make a big career as a musician I will let everybody know what a teacher is Justin !
I'm a reasonably advanced guitarist (59 years old, playing since 9) but I find your stuff amazing as a quick "how to" guide to grow my solo repertoire... I love your work. Thank you and keep it up.
Happy 67! Hope you’re still playing.
@@eclipse4048 Sure am! And looking for a bass player and drummer...

Justin your intro- playing and singing gave me goose boombs. Magnificent
How did you become a goose?
Peter Zezima dude, this song is so powerful, it can turn people into geese
schnitzengruuba
it feels like you never have heard johnny cash, have you?
to that I cried,;)
marcuspvxea JC was one of my Dad's favorite singers. I guess ive heard all of his songs at one time or another
Thats one of the rare songs about inner pain that is so well done, it can literally make you "hurt".

Awesome. Thanks Justin!
I LOVE YOUR VOCALS ON THIS MAN.FULL OF FEELING AND REALNESS.
@hypermegasphere on the record the piano is hitting the high G note through it all - and yes it sounds cool :)

Yeah
justinguitar is the best! this video is one of the best beginner tunes in my opinion because its easy to sing along and sound pretty good as a beginner.
@NewMetallica it's a mix of both the regular and this fancy one on the record.
I've looked at a lot of lessons on this song and yours is most accurate and beautiful.
I've learnt a hell of a lot from some of your video's in the past Justin, your an exellent teacher and decent feller for doing all this for free. Cheers.
You should never apologize for your voice, Justin. You sound great!
Just donated to your site.
I appreciate all the help you've given me through these videos!
Thanks, Justin.
I've been playing this song off and on for a year or so and this is the first time that it's clicked for me. Thanks so much, excellent video!!

Amazing song indeed, and yet not forbiddingly hard to play. The simplicity is perhaps what makes it so haunting yet beautiful. Thanks Justin!
Seriously Justin. You are The Best Guitar Tutor on You Tube.👏
That transition from C to D instruction opened up some other songs for me too I've never seen that it in 11 years of playing thanks for the video
Wow, I've been playing it Am-C-D this whole time. Am-C-C on 3rd fret (what's this chord called anyway) sounds much better and is a little easier. Thanks!
clamchowder138 with Am-C-D sounds better
clamchowder138 C on 3rd fret is one kind of a D-Cord ;)
I can't wait to learn enough to play this song! My grandmother died just before this song came out and she loved johnny.
Justin , what can i say My Man ? Your Fantastic, The Song is Fantastic . The Combo is even More so . Thank U 4 being here .
it was such a trip to hear justin singing this powerful song, and then we he's done hes back to regular old justin :)
You and Marty Schwartz should team up for a couple "dream team" lessons!
Marty needs to get a bit more accurate before that happens. Some of his stuff ok to pass off in a bar in a working band but not really close enough to teach.
Haha, that's hilarious, I had the same thought!!!!......really like both of them!
after 8 years, they never did a collaboration. 😔
The day i lost my job i bought myself a guitar and said to myself, now i finally have time to learn how to play a Johnny Cash song. Thanks Justin!
I cant tell you how much Im grateful you've done this lesson. Im beginner level but when I tryed fist time this song it was soo easy. Great teacher indeed. :)

Brilliant lesson Justin! You're the only person on UA-cam that can give Marty Schwartz a run for his money!
I'd like to see them duke it out in an acoustic battle!
Yeah, that'd be awesome!
I Agree!
mike gross does some great lessons too. Marty's lessons sound close, but he's not too concerned with playing how the artist actually did it.
Marty pips him to the post
Seriously this is the best guy in the world!
Justin - ignore the haters. You are providing excellent FREE lessons for beginners like me. The people making negative comments are morons that need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves why they are such cowards. Keep up the good work, much appreciation.

Jeez man. What a song. Hearbreakingly good. Thanks for the lesson, Justing. Much appreciated.
really enjoy ur videos, keep them coming
just the song i was looking for, took me a while thanks.
Cheers fella, really appreciate what you do.
When I play it, for the chorus I keep my little finger fretting the 'G' on the thinnest string - really ties the chords together :)
Thanks for this great video! It's very helpful.
