If I’d known that fan fic authors were getting handed money and publishing deals like candy, I would’ve kept up with my fic writing ages ago.
Instead I decided to ~go to college~ and ~learn proper grammar~. And for what? Student debt and no publishing deal.

+Naja I just saw the trailer because of Divya's video... all I can say that the story itself seems so upsetting... it reinforces the idea that a girl can only be confident in her sexuality if a man "helps" (more like forces her) to express it... that "love" validates you. So stupid how young girls are shown romantic tropes of trashy man and are forced to believe that what middle aged capitalist white men see as a "teenage dream" is real rather than an easy way to earn money by using sexuality. I'd rather watch Moonlight any day over this trash... BUT if people will keep on releasing stuff like this, one day I might just get so fed up and become a screenwriter myself (my dream).

I don't get why no one is talking about the obvious.... the fact that this self-isnert fanfic written by a (at the time) mid twenties woman about a real life teenage (at the time) boy doing all kinds of pornographic things to one another for a thousand pages.
It's like people have forgotten that Harry Styles is a real person. I am pretty sure that had the author been a man and Harry Styles been a girl, people would have had some serious issues with this, but since it's a guy no one gives a shit I guess?

It’s kinda sad too because I used to like Wattpad and met lots of friends who were actually good writers. People tend to flock towards terribly-written books that are just like “plot? idk her.” Then it repeats and eventually those books get popular and don’t get the constructive criticism it needs because apparently people can’t take other people’s judgements and people would complain it’s “not nice” and that they should just shut up. Free online book platform? Totally cool. But yeah the good books (oh you know, the ones with better plot and development) don’t get as much recognition as books like After (I can’t believe I called it a book yIkes).

Did some further research and the After novel has questionable messages and portrayal of toxic relationships. Didn't address much of that in this video because I haven't read too deeply into it yet, but just because it's "entertainment" doesn't mean people can't have opinions on things. I think it brings about varied discussions! 🌺 I mean, we can analyse and criticise the literary canon so we should be free and justified in sharing our views on other forms of media.

Not sure if this was meant to be answered or not, but I actually thought about this a lot. I think it's for several reasons: a girl might see him as a challenge to "fix" him (a fixer upper), a girl could be attracted to his boldness and decisiveness (I fall in this category), and/or a girl sees him as forbidden love (some people enjoy the thrill of the chase). Not sure if I'm missing some other reasons, but this is as much as I know. The answer is different depending on who you ask.

It's not the fact that it's a wattpad book that's been published and now is getting a movie adaptation that bothers me, it's the fact that it portrays an incredibly toxic relationship in once again a good light. There are already so many books like this (*cough* colleen hoover *cough*)! I'm sure it has done some damage already, showing young people that it's normal to be treated like shit by your partner, even arousing. Like seriously. And you know the movie will attract more people than the books, hence more people to influence. I'm really disgusted by this honestly.

Just like after - it became incredibly popular, the author made a publishing deal, changed the character names (from Edward Cullen to Christian Grey & from Bella Swan to Anastasia Steel or however her name is spelled), the published books became even more popular and it ended up becoming a movie lmao

ok but real opinion here: a fanfictions stays on the internet for a reason. Me, as a long time ff author and reader, know that there is as many good stories as bad stories. maybe more of the bad ones. but that doesnt metter because in a case of fanfiction, the writing is in 3/4 a training , challange to use language for longer forms than a school essay and about the things that we WANT to write, to see, to read. it's a dubble side pleasure - you write and fulfill yourself as a writer, an author, and the readers have fun because this two cute boys from their fav band made out or the avengers have a cosy evening playing board games. Or there is also a smut for y'all dirty mind people, yes, we have a place for you too, come, no kinkshaming (honestly, have you seen tags on ao3, better start washing my eyes in holy water). And its all fun and games because the environment (which is fandom) works on different vibes then a society in general. we allow a lot of things, bacause its a fiction, desire, kink, a need to continue a story (cos not every ff is a perverted journey, sometimes its even better then oryginal movie or game or whatever). It connects people in fandoms, it actually makes people read (bc apparently people dont read books nowadays which is sad but at least they read that one gay 30k words ff at 4am which is still more than an average person so shout out to fanfiction for promoting reading and also wrecking sleep schedule). Fanfiction works only in connection to its mothercell which is the actual work (book, movie, game, music, anime, yt etc). It works because of CONTEXT and some untold agreement for some (sometimes bad) things. thats why we have AUs, tags, povs, mary sues, all this shit. cos it works, it creates a context, thats why we enjoy it. its like tv series, after every episode we want more. hell yeah i want more of venom after this rom-com venom movie 2018, where the fanfics at? But as soon as someone from the outside looks into our hole and picks something bc it has 10384238 viewes and thinks - yes, it popular therefore it good ($$$$), the work is already doomed, cos we know that popular ff doesnt mean GOOD one. fandoms are closed societies, specific places, toxic environments. in popculture - cutlture of remix, context is the bacis rule. without it - you have like only a package. im not saying its impossible to somehow translate ff into an original story with other characters (changing a name is not the only step to make the new character work). it needs background, a universe. you can do it but without a good basic material it wont work. sure you can polish a piece of shit to shine but its still shit so what you gonna do. making a book out of ff is like a reverse fanfiction.
and with After - I wonder what 1D actually thinks about it, Harry Styles especially, cos boys and girls, this sure is hurtful. also because of the lack of context, this movie stright in the face promotes a toxic relationhip bulid on sex. Its says that being a virgin is something to be ashamed of and to quickly get rid of it. it says that kids have no hobbies. it says its ok to stick in a harmful relationship bc the guy that treats you like garbage is sometimes nice and has sex with you. unhealthy. not educational. sets wrong priorities for young girls - bc this is the group who is gonna watch it. 13-18. we need Lady Birds, not 50shades of gray for kids, what the heck

Also there is a book called the Fates; it’s wonderful but the author didn’t finish the series after she started her career in law.

themissinglambsauce ao3 is super niche - it really depends on what fandom you’re into. there obviously are original work and they’re tagged so on the site, but majority of the users are fanfiction writers or consumers and we rarely foray into other fandoms or original work so unfortunately i have no recommendations if you aren’t into the same fandoms that i consume content from. but they have a pretty solid tagging system so you can search any mix of the content you’re into (original work, f/m whatever it is that might be key components of the stories you’d like to read) and scroll through the stuff you wanna read! it’s wayyy more enjoyable if you’re in a fandom and want to read their stuff but there are original works too, which i hope are to your liking.
themissinglambsauce i did forget to mention - if you’re into specific relationships that are in a fandom like lmao one direction just search the ship like harry/niall (idk lmao) ao3 and you can filter the results you get on the page for stuff you like

As my personal opinion, there are many, many good books ( yes, they are proper _books_ ) with beautiful plots and awesome writing out there on Wattpad. The most-known are the weird, terrible fanfictions, but there are some stories that deserve to become a movie way more than After does. I don’t find it fair to say that all books on Wattpad have bad writing or that they are all about good girl/bad boy. Thank you for coming to my TED talk

I used to like wattpad and I do still read some stuff on there bc there is talent, and sometimes I just want to read the most cliche books ever. Nowadays I just use the draft section bc it doesn't require wifi so if I'm outside I can still write 😂

The directors will probably dig for the crappy ones in AO3 (if there's any) plus the movie directors don't dig for good fanfics in wattpad they grab whatever's trending.

I love Wattpad but I've noticed that the book that are actually great NEVER get recognized like the wasteland of bad plots and bad writing does! Wattpad platform is not as good as it could be.

I used to read the actual books on wattpad, but then a lot of the good ones like A Touch of Poison got published by some obscure company and were taken down. Now I can't find anything very good to read, so I gave up. Sometimes I write fanfiction to try and work out things in my own writing like what styles/POVs I feel comfortable doing and stuff like that but no one would give constructive criticism so I gave up.

I recommend reading Robert Thier a.k.a Sir Rob's Storm and Silence series. It's amazing and hilarious 😊😄 But it's sad to see you have up because I just wanted to know what is your stories so I can check it out. Plus, I love how you were looking for constructive criticism to get better in writing

I got multiple ads of the movie and didn’t know it was a Wattpad story before. I actually watched the whole ad without skipping to make sure my bois from Try Guys get their coins (moving on now) I cringed a lot tbh and in my head I was like “This seems like a badly written fanfic from Wattpad”, ohh boi I was correct.
I'm gonna see this movie and laugh due to the fact that I was a BIG fan of "After" back then, and I was 14 when I first read it. Still can't believe I was fan of the toxic relationship that was #Hessa

When I first saw the trailer I didn't even know that this book/fanfiction exists. I didn't like the trailer but the people commenting on it were so excited and happy so I decided to buy the book to read it first and give it a try at least you know. I thought "If the book is bad, the movie is gonna be worse."

Can anyone figure out why certain writing platforms have certain types of work? Like Wattpad is filled with cliche and immature, self-contradicting girls. FF.net has really amazing writing. AO3 has incredible stories AND writing. Quotev is just... bad. But why is there a clear distinction?
