Austin: I'm gonna go with GTX 780, which came out in 2013... Me: Bruh... GTX 980 came out in 2014... Or maybe he doesn't have a GTX 980, and seeing Ken pairing a Ryzen 5 5600X with RTX 3050 made me facepalm.
They didn't explain it but from the way they're taking, Both Ken and Austin couldn't check the prices of the parts they chose and Austin couldn't check the year a part was released. Ken chose the 3050 because it was new and cheap and since he can't check price to performance calculators, he went with his gut to get the cheapest new card he could find, being last year's 3050, still in stock at stores and the lowest end model.
I swear Nvidia is paying people to promote the 3050. It was frowned upon when it launched and they doubled down and made a weaker version with the same name. Why not go all AMD, the 6000 series is way better than a 3050
some people don't realize the cheaper 6600 is like 15% faster by default vs the 3050, so even if you considered DLSS(and DLSS at lower resolutions have more detail loss), it would still be a worse value than the 6600. and that GPU performance tier isn't something you would normally turn on ray tracing for either.
@@iamthesink I think it was also what parts they had on hand. Why not a 780 Ti if 780 was available? And clearly go for a 4790k. Cooler wasn't bad, but could've done a Hyper 212 type (NOT the Intel stock cooler) to save $70 and lose some on performance.
I love that Austin, after agressively celebrating his victory, was like "yeah that was some BS u should've won that" which I agree with. It's way easier to approximate which year certain CPUs or GPUs were released cuz they get released every year or 2 but other stuff like RAM, case, PSU and such usually take way longer to stop being relevant.
That was my exact build for about 8 years. Upgraded a couple years ago to what was initially a 5800X paired with a 3070 which has over the years and a series of trades and sales has been upgraded to a 4080. I was running 1440p and now I'm running an Aorus FV43U.
In Austin's defense, old PC parts prices are always ridiculous. Sellers think they have a gold mine just because they are PC components. It's cheaper to buy 2 whole PCs build the one you want out of the parts, then sell the donor PC for about half the money back if you wait a little bit. I got my $1600 PC for ~$450 doing this method(used parts, 2 PCs, sold the one with the parts I didn't want for a little bit to recoup some money for an upgrade). I hate spending $300/components on new items(exaggerated)
Yeah, sometimes people price used old components ridiculously, for example when I was building my last PC(had budget constraints) I had to pick between new and used, honestly I have no problems with buying used(when price is decent), but when I seen they want pretty much the same amount for used vs new I went with new and we are talking about components that were 2-3 years old, I found new for 170€ and used best price was 150€, like honestly I don't give a crap that you bought it for 400€, new one is currently 170€ and you are selling 3 year old USED part for 150€, obviously I will spend 20€ extra and buy new part with 3y warranty, couldn't care less what you paid for it 3 years ago. Most of parts were priced in that 90% of brand new part range and no f*ing way I'm spending 90% of price of brand new part for 3 years or older part, just no way. Sadly only component I bought used was GPU(which is still working perfectly fine) which was (most likely) miner card RX 580 8GB for 70€ 2 or 3 years ago(so nothing fancy).
The boxes of the GPUs you mentioned are actually empty, also it's not easy find a 3090 these days because the 30 cars now are so dated with the 50 coming out this or the next year they're using whatever available to them
It is weird how the pro setup went with a nearly 4 year old cpu with a mid-range nvidia card. I only say it's weird based on how over the top the previous pro setups were compared to the relatively safe setup.
The ram demerits were a bit unfair. The model of ram might have been released in 2015 but the sticks could in theory be only months old. But overall fun video. ;)
Well, when you think about it from the perspective of absolute age though Austin could've ALMOST had that RAM in his 10-year-old build so it makes sense that when limits were set that components for pro build had to be new, it makes sense to punish for that. Does it differ in performance? No. Was it completely against the agreed upon rules? Yes.
@@Janz_u if they did not have other available ddr4 ram why would it matter, its the same thing. he got off with the gpu for not being exact why complain when its the ram
But they HAVE stipulated that the parts have a certain timeline. Performance wise, it can be considered fairly new, but the point is the timing. I mean, would you say something from nearly 10 years ago is new? No, of course not. If it was just performance, yeah, it wouldn't warrant, but than, if that is the case, the guy doing the pro challenge could just pull the most powerful card they own from like 5 to 10 years ago with nearly the same performance for way less. Which would be unfair.
@@cttommy73 well that entirely depends. For example cars of the same model have yearly updates but they are still the same model. There are AM5 socketed motherboards with DDR 4 support meaning you can still use DDR 4 with the latest CPU´s.

And that amount of ram is pointless. 16 gb ram Ddr3 easily handles ddr4. So he basically wasted 110$ on literally nothing.
as someone once said Motherboards are more likely to fail over time compare to a CPU, so old motherboards are very quickly dwindling in supply, which is why the prices on them are stupid high when the chips they go with are a fraction of the price.
Question, at 6:34, the right, under Austin's arm, there is an older looking tower with the PSU up top, then a few seconds later, blink and you miss it, both are working on the PC build and the tower has gone?
When I converted my old Haswell based computer to Unraid, I had decided replace the CPU from an i5-467k to an i7 for vt-d features. Having that old CPU laying around, I had though about building a super cheap system with it. I found out that motherboards for those CPUs are still rather pricey on the used market unless you go with modern no name one.
I was surprised Ken didn't go all-out with brand new, top-of-the-line parts. It was a clear Pro vs. Broke showdown, and I expected something closer to $2,000, not $638. Austin, on the other hand, came very close! I think he should've gotten points for making his build work in an older case. The extra time he invested deserves recognition. Imagine a challenge: Pro vs. Broke vs. Marketplace. Austin, Ken, and Matt each build a PC, but the twist is we don't know who gets which category. Austin might surprise everyone with a high-end build, Ken could go the resourceful Marketplace route, and Matt might land somewhere in between. It would be a fun way to see their different approaches and how they tackle the challenge!
A better way to do this would be to compare a top of the line system from 2014 vs the most value for money build in 2024 to see how far things have come
An interesting solution to the disparity here would be to require the pro to build the smallest setup possible and the broke to either have no size restriction or build the biggest setup possible.

The memory ken used is DDR4. He really shouldn't have been using anything less than DDR5. Honestly though they really should have made the rules clearer. For Ken it either need to be something you can still purchase at Micro Center, or 2 years old, but not both. This caused confusion because the previous gen Ryzen CPUs and previous gen Nvidia GPUs are still being sold brand new at most places that sell components.
If Ken was only allowed to use parts Austin already had it's probably impossible to make a full system from parts less than two years old. The only things Austin has bought in the last two years has been junk or jokes.
