Frentzen and Barrichello were brilliant in 1999. Frentzen was 10 points down on Hakkinen at Nurburgring. Got pole and lead the race until after his pit stop then retired. Probably would have been joint championship leader after that race with both Irvine and Hakkinen finishing nowhere. You can really see how big the gap from the top3 teams to the rest is when you use the 99' points system. And also i think the current points system is rewarding midfield teams for their consistency. In the early days you just needed a wacky race like Germany or Brazil and with a bit of luck your midfield car ended up in P3 or P4 (Kvyat, Stroll) and your team was settled as best of the rest behind the top teams.

@bamboo zooka Well even the point change at ~2003 was made just to reduce points gap between winner and second place. @@stefanprodanov9443 I think Brazil 2008 was the starting point for the new points system, because Massa had won more but still lost. Many wanted to see Massa win a title.

Firstly; I'd love for this to become a full series. It's such a simple but fascinating concept, and quite enjoyable to see. Secondly; dear lord! The fastest car having reliability problems. Teammate fights. Rain. Several teams at a similar level. And that's what happened in 1999 to give us such an amazing season
If you are going to make this a series, I suggest starting with the 1950s under the current points system. Pretty sure that would have a signficant impact with all those retirements. You could also make up your own points systems. For example: What if points were awarded to the top 20? I'm sure alternate reality Russel would appreciate that.
Proposal for an alternate point system, to determine which drivers get the Yellow Shackles Of Multi-21 Bochmist: 3 points for drivers classified AND finishing ahead of their teammates, regardless of where they finish (e.g. 3 points for a win, and 3 points for a driver who finishes P19 if that driver's teammate finishes P20 or does not finish) 1 point for a DNF, unless the driver finished enough laps to be classified AND was classified higher than his teammate (3 points, see above) or are disqualified (0 points, see below) 0 points for classified behind their teammate, or for being disqualified for any reason (Danny and Hulk would both have gotten 0 points in Japan under this system)
This was a fun thing to see, mostly because this further proves my point that the top teams are more dominant towards the midfield than they used to be lets say 10-20 years ago. Now imagine how interesting races could be if the balance between teams was like in the old days
Irvine winning in 99 has to be one of the biggest what ifs of F1 history: a team that was built entirely around schumacher to let him win the title that wouldve had to celebrate its no.2 driver winning the title after 20 years
I was at the german grand-prix in 1999. Schumacher wasn't there because of broken leg. McLaren was dominant but both Hakkinen and Coulthard were out pretty early. Then Salo lead the race until shortly before the end when Irvine got ahead of him via Team-order. I don't remember any other race from that year, which is interesting considering you can see much more on TV then you can see at the race itself. For example I have no clue what actually happened to Coulthard. He just wasn't there anymore. And what I also remember is the sound of that Arrows-Engine. It was super-nasty and probably a good 10 dB louder than any of the others.
An interesting idea, can certainly see why they revamped the points system in 2003 looking at that. I'd be curious to see what the 2007 season would look like with the pre-1991 points system, considering how close the end result was. Also not happy that Irvine would have been a champion. Always thought he was a bit of a wally.
Really interesting to see how much the new system rewards consistency. Very good vid, may I suggest you do 2019 with the older systems as well? Gotta do something to amuse ourselves till Australia, right?
What Irvine helps with the 2019 points is the fact that the two 4th places and two 6th places he had make together 40 points....which is more than the 25 for the winner. Back then, it was only 8 points and thus, less than the 10 for the winner. I mention this because apart from the one victory less Irvine had than Häkkinen, the results in the points were the same (two 2nd places, three 3rd places, one 5th place). In other words: The 2019 points system helps Irvine compensate his one victory less.
Prost would've beat Senna by 1 point in 88 actually. I always mention this to ultra Senna fanboys who know nothing about the sport, just to piss them off, even though I'm a Senna fan myself :)

Very interesting, I seem to remember seeing a website elsewhere that compares this (I seem to remember that Piquet would lose championships!) but it would be very interesting to find out who all of the world champions would be each year by each and every points system! Of course it doesn’t take into account how differently drivers would drive in the last few races of a season, pushing harder or driving more defensively knowing how the mathematics would play out.
I think it’d be very interesting if you made a video on the 2007 F1 season. I think it’d be cool to see who would’ve came out on top between Raikkonen, Hamilton, and Alonso considering the fact that the three were separated by only 1 point.
It'd be great to see a single point system adjusted for all seasons across F1 history - or at least some sort of percentage - to nore accurately determine who'd have the best points tally. Maybe a fairer way of comparing generational greats. Fangio vs Prost vs Schui etc
Nice video. You should do 1988. Ayrton Senna won the championship despite cumulating 11 points LESS than Prost. That should make a pretty controversial video.
Do F1 season with motoGP points system (25 for 1st, spread all the way to 15th place). I think it's a better system for F1, I mean with wider range of points given, backmarkers would have reason to finish the race and not just retired for the sake of keeping their PU a little bit fresher.
Nice. Try a year that is so tight on points between champion and his contender, say 2007,where hamilton, Alonso and raikonnen were seperate by a point.
the more places that are given points the less likely drivers are to be largely rewarded for one off results. The current system rewards consistency over one off performances for midfield teams which i think is much better and could arguably be improved further to get a more representable midfield similar to formula 1.5, though the current system is pretty good.
In hindsight, I could never understand why Irvine was picked ahead of Barrichello until the Brazilian replaced him at Ferrari in 2000. Now I think I understand what the Ferrari chiefs had in mind. Their crystal ball told them there would be an inflated points system in place for '99, and that Schumacher would be out with a broken leg. So it was right on one count.
These experiments are highly interesting! If you apply the 10-6-4-3-2-1-point system to the 2008 season, Massa would have become world champion. And what would then have followed? Massa achieving better in the following seasons? The old frustration of Hamilton getting the better of him?
It seems like the current point system is designed around teams generally having good reliability and consistency. 2019 had more non top 3 podiums than the last few years plus the troubles at half of red bull, and the old rules still barely let many drivers score. More big screw ups means more variation in the top six or eight.
i did it too for 2010 and 2008 2008; 1. Massa 243 (6 wins) 2. Hamilton 243 (5 wins) 3. Raikkonen 190 4. Kubica 186 5. Alonso 154 2010; 1. Alonso 101 2. Hamilton 100 3. Webber 99 4. Vettel 99 5. Button 86 (I did every season too from 2006-2019)

can you do one of these from the 2008 season to 2019 points system
Nice idea!
Thought this was a really cool idea. I hope you continue to do it.
1976 under the present points system must be worth a look. I'd imagine there'd be quite a shake up.
This is life ! Awesome video and amazing trivia or info whatever you wanna call it.
Very interesting!! Please do more!
Keep these coming Sean!
And thats why the old scoring system was better (My opinion of course)
Do a swap between the 2009 and 2019 points system next
i want to see this 2019 point system during the senna and prost rivalry in the late 80s
Prost would've beat Senna by 1 point in 88 actually. I always mention this to ultra Senna fanboys who know nothing about the sport, just to piss them off, even though I'm a Senna fan myself :)
@@nicklibby3784 so u a senna fan but not a mighty annoying ultra senna fanboy? Wow, i never thought u existed. Especially for me, a prost fan. Cheers mate
This is all very interesting, do more please!
My memory of 1999 was how good Frenzten was and was champion material that year with his drives
I love this and wouldn't mind seeing more in future. Great content as usual Sean
What a funny and interesting video
Gonna be subscribing!
Make it a series babe! Beautiful stuff!
I want to see the 2003, 2007 and 2008 standings with the 2019 point system.
formula1.markwessel.com/champions/champions-season check it on this site
More of this please!
Don't worry Sean, I do same. Alternative history F1 is a great time.
I just started following f1 in 2018 so I really would appreciate a history lesson every now and then. And I'll be sure to check out 1999.
Whoa!!! Interesting about the 1999 standings. One thing's for certain, F1 crowned World Champions mostly from the European continent.
Great vid, Im a statistic addict, so I would love more of this :)
Nice video. You should do 1988. Ayrton Senna won the championship despite cumulating 11 points LESS than Prost. That should make a pretty controversial video.
Really enjoyed this. Would like to see more like 88'; Prost got ripped off by the best 11 result rule
Do F1 season with motoGP points system (25 for 1st, spread all the way to 15th place). I think it's a better system for F1, I mean with wider range of points given, backmarkers would have reason to finish the race and not just retired for the sake of keeping their PU a little bit fresher.
I'd love to see more of this
Malaysia 99 - Schumacher returns not quite 100% and blows everyone away.
Nice. Try a year that is so tight on points between champion and his contender, say 2007,where hamilton, Alonso and raikonnen were seperate by a point.
I'm taking notes for other years...so I'll jot this one down. 2007 and 2008 could be really interesting!
I did it and I remember Kimi still wins but Alonso is ahead of Hamilton just by two points
0:35 WOW look at those liveries
You should turn this into a series 😀👍👍
the more places that are given points the less likely drivers are to be largely rewarded for one off results.
Some close seasons (e.g. 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009) would be interesting with the current point system.
It seems like the current point system is designed around teams generally having good reliability and consistency. 2019 had more non top 3 podiums than the last few years plus the troubles at half of red bull, and the old rules still barely let many drivers score. More big screw ups means more variation in the top six or eight.
Do 1984 when Lauda won the Championship from Prost by halve a point.
Wow! The old scoring system really reflects the gap between the top teams and everyone else!
Gotta admit, I've been wondering about this, not these two seasons specifically, just any random seasons.
Great video. Thanks man
i did it too for 2010 and 2008
2008;
1. Massa 243 (6 wins)
2. Hamilton 243 (5 wins)
3. Raikkonen 190
4. Kubica 186
5. Alonso 154
2010;
1. Alonso 101
2. Hamilton 100
3. Webber 99
4. Vettel 99
5. Button 86
(I did every season too from 2006-2019)
I now want to see every season with every point system
Good content. Bordering on Juicy
Its a pretty simple idea, so make them short. It’ll be more fun and we’ll stick around.
