Thanks for this video, it saved me SO much money! A lock shop employee was condescending to me and I came home frustrated. Couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until I saw your detailed video for the deadbolt installation. Then I realized the lock shop man put the mechanism in upside down, which I also did. Watching your video detail corrected the problem, and I THANK YOU! May God richly bless you!

I appreciate you showing this video. I going to try and replacing my current Schlage to the Schlage Plymouth single cylinder. bright brass knob combo pack from HomeDepot after 2 attempt of purchasing the wrong door knob ANGLE PART the latch FACING THE DOOR Good TIP !! I will let you know how it went. Thank you!
You are a beautiful man! i learned some things for the installation of my new Schlage front entry door like. i returned a Kwikset Juno lock that they said didn't have their system of leaving the screws in & then twisting the inner handle on & then tightening. My other Kwikset inner handle fell off & on the floor one morning going to work! i like the Schlage with the screws that go through & hold the inner door handle on...much better! Thank you Contractor John!
At 2:05 it appears to be installed incorrectly and upside down. You can see the word Top with an arrow pointing down instead of up. Then at 2:10 it is installed correctly and right side up. That took me about 10 minutes to figure out why mine was not the same. Other then that, great video, very helpful.
I had the exact same problem. I installed it upside down, just like in the 1st part of the video. It took me a while to figure it out, in part because I saw the close-up on this video and thought that I had it right.
I added an HOUR to reinstalling this lock BECAUSE of the initial error in the video. Only scrutiney of the video revealed this error. Thanks for messing me up. :(
@@gcn9 Absolutely! This is the worst. Not only is it upside down but the pin and the rod are completely going into the wrong holes! This video should be edited or removed.
@@ByGodfrey Thank you for your comment! It was 3 years ago but I was so frustrated that I couldn't get the pin and the rod to align with what was shown in the video.
Ed, I agree with you but local building codes do not allow what you described. Their fear is you will not be able to find the key to let yourself out in event of an emergency, and if you leave a key in the lock, you are back to the situation you described. The best solution would be an alarm system with a glass break monitor. Thanks for your comment.
John, this is helpful except that that in your very first image, the deadbolt is upside down. In the later image, the deadbolt is correctly inserted, right side up. - Ron
Hi John.. there is that small part that rests under the dead bolt. how does that stay put while your are installing the screws (the first system you show in the video. )
I prefer using Kwiksets because they are easier to install than Schlage. I came across this video because we have a lock set that is unfortunately Schlage. It's a pain to use these things and I just ended up throwing away the Schlage set we have.
I did something wrong. The housing screws align just fine, but when i tighten them i cannot get them flush with the inside housing. Schlage B60 deadbolt. Do you have any ideas about what i have done wrong? Thank you
I figured it out. I had to start with the thumb lock exactly vertical, completely install one housing screw, before inserting the second housing screw. Otherwise, when I tried to tighten the two at the same time, the heads of the screws ran into the thumb lock because it is slightly tapered (wider closer to the door)
No mention of the little half moon part of the latch (that moves in and out independent of the big latch) and is supposed (according to Schlage) is NOT supposed to go into the hole with the large part of the deadlatch.
is there a way to make the door knob not open from the inside when lock. i hate that if you dont have the dead bolt lock, even with the door knob lock a child can still open the door. thanks for video

At 2:03, is that deadbolt strike latch in upside down? I am stuck on this step and mine looks opposite of that one. Let me try and turn mine upside down?
Once the door knob is in, are the screws suppose to be on the top and bottom of knob? I've only seen the screws on either the left and right of the knob.....please clarify. I don't know if I am doing something wrong.
+Ariel Dimaya The screws need to be on either side, not top and bottom. Side to side is the only way the handle fits through the strike latch. Contractor John Follow Contractor John and receive a FREE gift ContractorJohn.com
Great video, but it's not a good idea to install a single cylinder deadbolt on a door with a window and sidelights. One small punch, the glass is broken, and the bad guy will reach in and unlock the door. A double cylinder deadbolt is the way to go. Just be sure you don't leave the key in the lock.
I have 4 doors. Two open with door knob on right side of door and two with door knob on left. I think I can make the middle piece of the lock point in either direction (to the right or to the left) and that way the key will always be in same direction when used to open the doors.
We are trying to REINSTALL our Schlage deadbolt after restaining our door. This video is confusing even with the note that it is in upside down....a corrected video would be helpful. My husband is so frustrated he is ready to buy a new one and start from scratch.
Sometimes one of the screws backs out, or loosens a little and stops the thumb latch from moving. Or if you just installed it try loosening the screw a tiny bit. Hope that helps Contractor John
consulted this video for help, and ended up wasting time and getting frustrated. This should be corrected or deleted. The deadbolt is inserted upside down and incorrectly assembled in the first part of the video. He then corrects this without mentioning it or showing the correction(???) and demonstrates the deadbolt turning freely. I hope you have read the comments before you try to follow the video.

Please take the time to put a note in the video of the mistake, as it is happening. I'm sure you are not too fond of wasting time. That note would have save me some, were it there.

No there is not a legal way, or a safe way. People could be trapped in the house, especially if there are kids involved.

How do you change the lock so it is up when you need to put the door knob on other side of door?
I am not understanding your question
I have 4 doors. Two open with door knob on right side of door and two with door knob on left. I think I can make the middle piece of the lock point in either direction (to the right or to the left) and that way the key will always be in same direction when used to open the doors.

The camera is giving wide shots of contractor john. Sure wish they focused the camera on the lock instead. It would have been so much more helpful.
What do you need to know?
I'm trying to get the dead bolt to retract so I can get the door to unlock!! Frustrated!!!
