I live not far from Circleville. Some of the locals there claim that Butch never died in Bolivia, and had come back to visit numerous times after, and died and was buried there in the 1950s. Some older folks even claim they've met him. Probably BS for visitors, but fun to think about.

Just like Billy the Kid, it was a case of mistaken identity. That's why they where barred so fast in unmarked graves with no one viewing the bodys. It wasn't unheard of Butch showing up to old friends homes but he wouldn't let them call him Butch. A quick Google search will show you everything.

You'd fit right in in Australia. One of our most revered people from history was an outlaw, Ned Kelly. So much so that his self made armour is on display in one of our libraries and you can't walk into an Aussie themed gift shop without being able to find something about him, eg. t shirt, key chain etc.
His childhood home is actually in what is now Circleville, a small farming town on the outskirts of Beaver. I live less than an hour away and I have been there! There is a restaurant there called Butch Cassidy's Hideout and it is delicious! 😀

Simon....there is a lot more information out there that you might want to look into. As for the Telluride robbery, Butch's associates were Tom McCarty, Matt Warner & Bert Madden. McCarty was the oldest of the group, the leader and the brains of the San Miguel Valley Bank robbery in Telluride, Co. This was Butch's 1st bank robbery. He had met Matt Warner and became involved with him and his horse racing. He later met Matt's brother-in-law, Tom McCarty. Thus began Butch's outlaw training. There was a very in depth book written about them all: "In Pursuit of the McCartys". Later in history, Butch became "glorified" and given the credit many times for what Tom McCarty had done and what he was like. Tom stole and then gave it to the "needy" many times. By the time Butch had met Matt and Tom, he(Tom) had a well organized gang with Matt Warner, brother Bill and others out of Utah. I won't go on much further as this isn't the place to do it. To sum this up for now, you may ask how I know some of this ? Tom McCarty was my g-g-grandfather and Matt Warner (Willard Christiansen) was my g-g-uncle. I have a copy of Tom's autobiography, published in 1898. I live and was born and raised in Wyoming, although my family came from Utah. Our family was very colorful. Some people ask why I am so proud of Tom McCarty and Matt Warner being my ancestors. I will tell you, because it is a great part of western history and theirs is a much bigger story than is known. Tom got "robbed" of the glamor and glory, and for some reason the history and their story became twisted and Butch and Sundance became the "stars". I do love the old west and it's history. Hey Simon, Wyoming native here. Robbers Roost and Hole in the Wall are two different areas. There may be a similarly named area in Robbers Roost, but I’m not familiar with that area.
A family of my relatives fed Butch and the Sundance kid (not knowing who they were) they said that their guests were really nice and had good manners. Butch and the Sundance Kid left the next morning (I think). Later that day, a posse looking for Butch informed my relatives that they had just fed one of the biggest criminals in the US haha
they're usually more interesting and more likable than actual celebrities. At least they're famous for skills that you can respect, unlike the many people who become famous for simply spouting their opinions on youtube
Honestly gentleman criminals are really intriguing. They had no problem with stealing or causing trouble, but at the same time they took care to cause the minimum amount of havoc necessary, and many were even polite and respectful towards their victims

Honestly gentleman criminals are really intriguing. They had no problem with stealing or causing trouble, but at the same time they took care to cause the minimum amount of havoc necessary, and many were even polite and respectful towards their victims
