Good comment. I've been fascinated by Holmes' story for decades. Recently, I've been following organized crime. I have to check myself to remember that we're dealing with murderers and willful perpetrators of violence. The Age of Desensitization? The Space Age began a few days before I was born and I have lived through assassinations, wars, civil unrest, media sensationalizing criminal conduct, multiple gunshots heard at night, little children hit by stray bullets, gang activity, drug dealing, societal decay, and a government and institutions that seem complicit in the downfall of our way of life. Another note. As for what Holmes actually did with the remains of his victims, he would strip the bodies of their flesh down to the bone, articulate the skeletons, and sell the skeletons to local physicians and medical schools. For context, during the years Holmes was active, it was illegal to use cadavers for medical purposes. The problem was that student doctors needed bodies to practice all the new procedures they were learning. So, in addition to using the remains of convicted criminals, medical students would raid paupers graves at cemeteries in the middle of the night. If you want a more detailed version of this story, I highly recommend the H.H. Holmes episodes that Last Podcast on the Left did.
Hang on, he was born in 1861, was married in 1878, went to university in 1882, went home in 1884 and then skipped town on a swindled ticket in 1866? That would make him five years old! I think you have your date stamps wrong.

A lot of people seem to be complaining about the pings accompanying the pop-up annotations. I only started noticing them after reading some of those comments, and I am certain many still went unnoticed.
America's first serial killer was the Servant Girl Annihilator in Austin, Texas. Dec 30, 1884 - Dec 24, 1885. -- three years before Jack the Ripper, and seven years before HH Holmes. Like Jack the Ripper, the Servant Girl Annihilator was never caught.
@@Caesar2k1 I live not far from where the Benders lived when they murdered people. There's a historical marker near the site, and a local hill is called "Benders' mound."
Hello Simon! I really enjoy watching biographies often people I knew little orange nothing about. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I was wondering if you could do a biography of Truman Capote? I think he had a very fascinating life. Thanking you in advance.
I read the book about him and the world's fair. You clarified some things that the book didn't get right or didn't know at the time of its writing. Thanks again, for another informative history lesson. 👍👍👍
A bit disappointed that more time wasn't taken describing the "hotel" he built in Chicago, since that's really what he's infamous for and most of his victims died. He created rooms that had hidden gas pipes and peepholes so he could watch the women slowly being gassed. He had trapdoors to slide the bodies down into the basement so he could burn the bodies. Soundproof rooms, torture rooms, etc. etc. He even had different construction companies build parts of it so no one would see the entire blueprint and start asking questions.
He was never a serious suspect for it. He was never in England during the time of the Jack the Ripper killings and by the time he was caught he admitted to 27 murders, which was likely extremely exaggerated. Given that he admitted to multiple murders he didn't commit, if he was Jack the Ripper, he definitely would've said so.
I suggest you watch the American Ripper! It's where H.H.Holmes' great-great grandson believes his grandfather could have been Jack the Ripper, goes through evidence that could suggest H.H.Homles' could have been in England at the time of the Ripper killings! They go through A lot more evidence that could suggest H.H.Homles' could have been Jack the Ripper! Fascinating doco series!
I agree with the comments about the pings and music, but this is the only video I've seen with them and am glad the issue was addressed. That said, why isn't this guy more famous? Why don't we have a bunch of movies about him? Instead we get pretty people on a spaceship or something and very bad, poorly written and conceived storylines. Meanwhile there are a million stories from history begging to be retold - intelligent, fascinating, gripping, and even horrible. Glad you do them, just another reason UA-cam is better than most of what Hollywood puts out. If it weren't for a few shows I wouldn't even bother having broadcast TV hooked up to mine, 99% of the time it's YT. Go Simon, making the world just a little bit smarter.
I love all the channels you present on, Simon luv, but it's not statistically possible for Holmes to be the first serial killer in the US. The most inventive, maybe, but there's no way the country existed for over a century with no serial killers.
True, but he isn't the one who started it. H.H. Holmes is often called that and is just the first person caught that we have record of who meets the idea people have of a serial killer. The bloody benders started their killing in 1870s, but they were never caught. The bodies were found. It was pretty lawless in a lot of parts, so it was easy to not get caught. Killing lots of people in duels or shoot outs doesn't count.
I'm wrong. The Harpe brothers are considered to be the first serial killers in the U.S. They started their killing spree in the 1790s but killed a lot of people fighting for the British in the Revolution. They were a part of a rape gang during the war and killed a lot of colonists. They were Scottish immigrants not English. They admitted to killing 39 people, but it is suspected that the number exceeds 60. They killed a lot of infants too because their crying annoyed them. Lots of them were their own children born to the two wives they held prisoner and raped. They were messed up.
if i was having a nice convo with a guy and just some other random guy came and threatened the guy i was talking to just cause he was talking to me wouldn't make me attracted to him it would make me want to run away from him cause to me that seems controlling and a couple other bad traits i wouldnt want in a BF
Yeah, but you don't live in 1878. Back then, the traits that a woman would look for in a potential husband are very different than what they are today, because the role of the woman in the marriage was much different.

I heard they did this in England too. Lot of grave robbing going on for medical students.
Excellent as always, thank Simon.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Title: "America's first Serial Killer"
Thumbnail: "Worlds first Serial Killer"
Me: CONFUSION.
Edmqnd I noticed that, too
Americans tend to forget that there's more to the world than just them. :D
The funniest part is that he is neither the world’s nor America’s first serial killer.
I've subscribed to this *new* channel. I'm really looking forward to the content narrated by Simon, of course.
Thanks :)
The background music reminds me of Harry Potter but I get that with most British narrators 🤷🏼♂️😂

Hang on, he was born in 1861, was married in 1878, went to university in 1882, went home in 1884 and then skipped town on a swindled ticket in 1866? That would make him five years old! I think you have your date stamps wrong.
watching these type of videos throughout the years i’ve learned that the word “beautiful” gets thrown around a lot 🌚
I like the new channel! I do however wish you had the same kind of microphone that you use for toptenznet the audio quality on those videos sounds marginally better. Either way can't wait to see your new videos every week.
We will take this feedback into consideration. Thanks.
seriously, these serial killer videos are amazing

I thought I knew a little, I now know I knew very little. Thank you Simon and crew for learning me but good! lol
I keep hearing references to "young women" or "beautiful women", only to be confronted by pictures of small, ugly boys.

How many hours are in your day?!? Nice new channel!
Your content has improved a great deal since then.
I seem to have like 10 useful hours a day in me, simon has like 68 hours per day...
Don't be too depressed, Simon has lots of supporting people writing, editing, producing and marketing. But, he is the hardest working person I know. - Shell
So happy I found your channel!!! I love it and will watch everything... Super interesting, keep up the good work!!!
Thank you for a very well done video.
I really have to say how much I'm enjoying your videos. I've long been a lover of history. In my rare chances to relax, this has once again fan the flames for my love of history. Keep up the great work and bless you very much.
Man the ping sound effect has got to go
We don’t use it on newer videos.
A lot of people seem to be complaining about the pings accompanying the pop-up annotations. I only started noticing them after reading some of those comments, and I am certain many still went unnoticed.
The original Triple H.
Those dings after 1:05+ had me thinking I had accidentally selected a Cinema Sins video

TimeLady8 technically it was the harpe brothers in the 1790s who were America’s first serial killers. There were also the bloody benders in the 1870s.
@@Caesar2k1 I live not far from where the Benders lived when they murdered people. There's a historical marker near the site, and a local hill is called "Benders' mound."
People don't literally mean that he was the first serial killer that the country ever had, they mean he was the first well-known serial killer.
Just started watching these. This is old you can always tell by Simons beard. He is awesome so is this channel
It's all about the Game and how you Play it HHH
This music was a DOPE touch. Good work

Hello Simon! I really enjoy watching biographies often people I knew little orange nothing about. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I was wondering if you could do a biography of Truman Capote?
I think he had a very fascinating life.
Thanking you in advance.
"I was born with THE DEVIL IN ME"
I read the book about him and the world's fair. You clarified some things that the book didn't get right or didn't know at the time of its writing.
Thanks again, for another informative history lesson. 👍👍👍
1:20 They do look like loving parents....
I have checked via Google and Wikipedia. The 1866 date quoted at 6.44 of this video that makes no sense in the timeline should be 1886 !
"Authorities from a number of *states*, including Philadelphia..."
Philadelphia is a city not a state.
Pretty sure he knows that, just a mistake. We're all human
OK, what he meant was "Authorities from a number of states and the city of Philadelphia."
This guy and his editor is a fuckin mess ay.
Nothing about him being one of the suspects for being Jack the Ripper?
It's not worth mentioning because it's rubbish.
Rest In Peace to those that passed away.
He was not the "the world's first serial killer". There were many serial killers before him. Liu Pengli, for example.
Just subscribed! Could you do a bio on Terry Fox?
He wasn't the first, he was the biggest.
@@melvynobrien6193 He wasn't that either. He was arguably the most creative and certainly put the most time, effort and money into it.
I live not too far from where he lived in the Irvington part of Indianapolis. It's still got a creepy feel when you pass it
@Esperanza Lastarria Kinda gives "special delivery" a whole new meaning. That IS creepy!

The video is amazing, but the audio's a bit .. jumpy
could you maybe try to dim down the audio of the 'whoops' and 'bings'?

I do enjoy your videos. I may be wrong but the picture of Julia Connor you flashed was one of Pitezel’s children, Alice.
if i was having a nice convo with a guy and just some other random guy came and threatened the guy i was talking to just cause he was talking to me wouldn't make me attracted to him it would make me want to run away from him cause to me that seems controlling and a couple other bad traits i wouldnt want in a BF
Yeah, but you don't live in 1878. Back then, the traits that a woman would look for in a potential husband are very different than what they are today, because the role of the woman in the marriage was much different.
You’re very ugly though so you never have to worry about a man willing to fight for you.
+David L. We can't judge your own looks but your comment betrays an inner ugliness.

That's it! Voilaaaaa
Excellent video. However I do feel the same with other about the volume and pinging's. The music is mentally load compared to your voice. However I still love your work, and thank you for your time.
Pinging is removed from future vids.
@@Biographics Jaysus, these Snowflakes are annoying, eh? Most of us, the people without ADD or other psychological problems, hardly noticed the pings and weren't distracted by them. Next they'll complain about the background, or the lighting. You're not going to satisfy some idiots distracted by pings; they'll start obsessing about something else.
What a fantastic youtube channel. Keep it up so interesting.
I'm reading "the devil in the white city" pretty damn captivating so far. It could use some pings though.
I like the pings. PING went the strings of my heart.
The woman who is mentioned as Julia Connor is not her but Alice Pitezel, daughter of Ben Pitezel (whose murder he was convicted for)
You should’ve went more into depth with the amount and way of his murders imo
Yeah I was hoping for that.
They also didnt cover the accusations made that Holmes was Jack the Ripper. The murders began when he arrived in England and stopped after he left.
