It is so inspiring to watch you. I have to say I am getting more confident doing free motion stitching. I really appreciate all the tips you give and your close up videos are super clear. I really appreciate you taking the time to make these tutorials. Thanks as well for including links to suppliers..
I'm dying because that camper is so cute. This is just the video I needed because I have an idea to do something and now I know I can! #beginnerquilter. Thank you!
I've been thinking about branching out to applique for my next quilt, and your video gave me that confidence, that push I needed to go for it, Julia!! The free foot technique is definitely one I can do. Thank you! 😍
7/4/18. I spent most of the day hooking up my wireless printer so I can try your llama with the free printout. Hopefully my sewing won't be so mind blowing as hooking up the printer. Thanks. I love your tutorials
I have watched many of your videos and have now subscribed to your channel. Your are a wonderful artist Julia! Thank you for your videos they are an inspiration to me!
That’s amazing didn’t know that was even possible in a regular marchine. You make it look so easy. I’m always trying to figure how to add cute stuff to my sewing ( still a beginner like like though) I’m starting to make masks and was thinking of how I can make them my own. I will play now thank you so much. Just became a subscriber 👍
Hi, Thank you so much for subscribing! Free-Motion stitching takes a little practice but is so much fun once you "get it". It will open a whole new world of sewing for you. Remember that you move the fabric so keep it moving! That seems to be the hardest part for beginners. Have fun! Julia
when you said the color name of the fabric I was so surprised to see it really did look like rolled out pie crust. Great background fabric and very cute pillow.
I about to lay down a road with cars, stop and go signs. I can't wait to practice using your advice of FMQ. Cuz you make it look so doable👍🙋I 'll let you know. I Subscribed😉
I have sewn for 55 years now, but have never tried free-motion sewing. I love the way the finished product looks and can’t wait to try it! This ‘new to me’ method of sewing hopefully leads to many fun projects. Thank you. P.S. Did I miss/overlook the handle on the camper door? I did not see how you finished it. Blessings! 💕
Hi, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you give free-motion stitching a try. It's fun and addicting! I too have been sewing for 50+ years and still going strong. I completely forgot the handle on this little camper. I filled it in with some hand stitching at the end :) Happy stitching, Julia
I love it! Is this done on a normal sewing machine? Can I buy a special type of foot for my standard machine that will allow me to do this technique? Thanks.
Hi Abby, yes most sewing machines are capable of free motion stitching. The foot can be purchased for your machine. You may have to ask a sewing machine dealer to get the correct one. It takes practice but is so fun!
I love doing applique but I just don't have the time to embroider all the way around everything. Thank you for showing me (this is the first video of yours that I've seen) a quicker way to finish them off!
Thanks for your great videos! I've been trying Free Motion embroidery for a while now and sometimes it works fine, and other times I get loads of skipped stitches, birdnesting, thread breaking etc etc. Do you have any tips for smooth stitching all the time? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! I use stitchable bondaweb, have cleaned my needle etc, and I don't know what else to try. Thanks!
It sounds like it might be something with your machine. Here are my steps: Change to my free-motion foot, lower my feed dogs, Stitch Length to "0", lower pressure foot, then take off. It may sound silly but because your foot isn't tight on the fabric, it is easy to forget to lower your pressure foot. This will cause bird nesting. If you are still having problems, next time you take it in for cleaning etc, have your repair person help you. I have gotten lots of hints form the sewing machine shop. I do not use any special thread or needle. I also do not mess with my tension. Hope this helps, Julia
I love the video and your creation. I have a question. I’ve been using steam a seam and really small pieces of fabric and the fabric has been fraying when I free motion quilt over it. What am I doing wrong? The only thing I’m thinking is that I’m sewing too close to the edge of the fabric. But I want to be able to machine wash and dry the finished piece. I noticed you are making a pillow. It too will probably be washed. Any help you can provide would really make my day.
Raw edge free motion applique will fray some when washing. I'm not sure of a way to completely prevent the fraying. I usually stitch a little away from the edge, it will fray but not beyond the stitching. I've always liked the fraying but it is not for everyone.
Hi Carolina, Yes, I use fabric glue all the time. Even white school glue works great. It is completely washable, non toxic and can be heat set for quick drying. Always make sure it is dry before sewing to eliminate glue on your needle. Thanks for watching, Julia
Your ink work, stamping and inktense, does it hold up to washing? I mark socks with permanent ink sharpies for easy sorting, but after a few washings it needs to be marked again, because of fading/disappearing. Especially when you are adding stamped words, I would not want to go that way if it would fade on wearables. Just questioning if I need to practice a lot of writing skills to see how effective I can get with seeing, and reading small script. Thread for script work, is it better to go thin or thick? This is so cute, I grew up camping and seeing The States on school breaks...Spring, Summer (2-3 week stretch as my day got more vacation time), and Christmas. Even being gone on Christmas Day three years that I remember, so we celebrated “little Christmas” those years. Anyway, this would be a great quilt square to add to any personal quilt or comforter....might have to come up with other “memory squares”. Thank you for sharing this, it was nice to recall those wonderful times on the road with four brothers and three sisters. (The older two sister disliked the outdoors, and loved the freedom of staying home as soon as they could be left at home. Mom did not travel well, so she would fly to a destination like Williamsburg, and camp for the 3-4 days we did sight seeing in that one area of interest. Then she would return home to spend time with the girls.” Wow! I am long winded about my story. I feel you are sharing so much with me, I guess it feels right to just talk with you. Peace.
HI Monica, Here is a video I did on testing fabric medium: ua-cam.com/video/UH-ZzA9md9I/v-deo.html I found the results to be quite interesting. I would not do artwork with inktense or stamping on anything that needs repeated washing. I have found that light washing or spot washing is fine. I would not put it on clothing that needs a lot of washing or something like placemats. But I have done some shirts and sweatshirts that can be hand washed or washed on a gentle cycle. Always test. Thanks for sharing your story- it's so fun hearing from viewers! Julia
Are the Gellatos specific type name. for fabric so they don't wash out? I love this technique & was just wondering what the soecific name was called. I seen you listed Gellatos by Fabri Castille. Thankyou
Hi, I use the Gellatos by Faber Castell. Instead of using water to activate I use a fabric medium. I then heat set. I have had good luck with washing. You may want to do some testing to see if they work for you.
Hi Liliana, Most household sewing machines are capable of free motion stitching. Disengage the feed dogs by lowering them. (On some sewing machines the feed dogs can be covered with a plastic plate). You will also need a quilting free motion foot or darning foot. Your sewing machine dealer can help you with the right one for your machine. I also set my stitch length to 0! I hope you try it - it's so much fun and addicting! Happy creating! Julia
Hi, Yes! I just looked up that sewing machine and you can drop the feed dogs with a lever. I'm not sure if the foot is included with your accessories but you can look it up in your manual. You need either the quilting foot or the darning foot. If it didn't come with your machine, one can be purchased separately. You will need to know if your machine has a short or long shank. A sewing machine dealer can help you. I hope you give it a go! FM stitching takes practice but it is so fun! Julia
Hi Stacy, So funny...I didn't realize I forgot the doorknob until after I completed the project :) I had to go back in with the embroidery thread. Thanks so much for watching.
Hi, Yes I am using fabric scissors. However, I have different "degrees" of fabric scissors. I keep my very best or newest for fabric only. My slightly more dull or older is used to cut the paper -backed (heat-n-bond) fabric. Hope this makes sense. Thanks so much for watching, Julia

Debating whether I should spend the money for a machine that would allow me to try this. My current machine is very dated and doesn't have the proper foot or capability for it. Thanks!
Hi, Can you disengage your feed dogs with your current machine? If you can, you can probably find a darning or FM Quilter's foot that will fit. I would start with what you have if you can. I think beginners can easily learn how to free motion. It does take some practice however. The hardest thing is the movement. Once you "get it" it's really fun. Keep in mind that free motion stitching is mainly for creative sewing and not for garment construction- that may also make your decision. Hope this helps, Julia
Hi Carla, I did a video where I tested different mixed media supplies on fabric. I activated with fabric medium, then heat set, then washed in the washing machine. I was very surprised with the results. Many water solubles like Gelatos, where quite permanent once heat set. Always test before using anything on a project. Hi, This design was cut by hand. I did not use a cutting machine. The design was traced onto a paper backed adhesive, then ironed on the back of the fabric. Each piece was then cut by hand. I call this technique " free-motion appliqué" Hope this helps, Julia
Dury Aqeel Hi, I use a regular straight stitch set at 2.5 - 3. The feed dogs are lowered and I use a darning or embroidery foot. I do not change the tension. Hope this helps!

I'm curious about what machine you are using for your free-motion work. I have such a hard time with this technique using my old sewing machine. Might be time for an upgrade. Thank you!

My second machine is a Janome Memory Craft. It is a computerized machine and was spendy- around $2000. You do not need a fancy machine to free-motion. You do have to be able to disengage the feed dogs. Hope this helps! Julia
