    A little tip for building onigirazu: I usually place plastic wrap in the container first, then pile the ingredients, that way the rice won't stick to the container. Just place nori on top and flip it over or take out the mixture using the plastic wrap and form it firmly like a rice ball before wrapping it in the nori.
    Thanks for your delicious ideas! I enjoy using them in my kitchen for healthier options. 💜

    Thanks to you, Miwa, I've started eating miso soup with rice for breakfast and I feel much healthier and better than when I ate typical Western breakfasts like cereal or sandwiches. I just make mine super simple, if I don't have fresh vegetables I use frozen ones.

    I love your videos very much! You always keep it “real”! I love the bloopers! 😂 In Hawaii we use a non-stick Spam musubi maker mold to make onigirazu. You can buy it on Amazon. It’s a rectangular shape so you need to cut the nori in half. I eat plant-based so I put natto, kimchi and avocado in mine. I’m gonna try your kinpira gobo recipe next. Thank you for making Japanese cooking so enjoyable! Doomo arigato Miwa! 💗

      Oh yes, they're great to have! I bought an onigiri mould in Tokyo and a musubi mould in Honolulu so I'm all set when it comes to squashing rice in an aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic fashion 😄✌. The only thing I don't have is a bamboo roller for Korean kimbap, ha!

    Everything looks so delicious! I’m glad you included your adventures with getting the rice out onto the nori! I had a hard time making the triangle ones and it’s good to see that everyone has mishaps sometimes! 😀 Thank you so much for the link for dashi!!!! I always wondered what was missing from my miso soup, it always tasted flat. I’m looking forward to a boost of umami flavor! I'm so glad you are promoting these dashi packets! My local Asian supermarket doesn't carry any packets and many times before work I am in too big of a hurry to make dashi, so I end up skipping soup all together, which leaves my meals feeling empty! I have a very small fridge, so I don't have room to store big containers of pre-made dashi stock for my meals.

    While I've seen it before, I've never actually tried onigirazu! So I tried it the other day after watching this. I made it with cabbage, tofu katsu, and chipotle mayo (silken tofu mayo + seasoning) because I had the tofu katsu on hand that needed to be finished. I used a container like you but wiped a little sesame oil (olive/rice oil would work too!) on the inside first and it was super easy to pop out onto the nori! Def recommend.

    I think maybe brushing a very thin layer of sesame oil might help with the sticking issue. You already use it in the filling, so as long as you only use a very small amount to brush on, it shouldn't change the flavour. :)

    Oh wow! I really want to try the onigarazu! I’ve had sushi often in my life but I had my first onigiri last week from one of our wonderful stores. I got the umeboshi and natto (I’m determined to like natto). They were TERRIFIC!! 💚 Now I will try your natto pancakes before I try natto by itself. I like so many foods but some textures are more difficult!!
    I also bought a bag of dashi packets. I looked at all the ingredients and found one that was made of all types of dried fish and kombu. No salt or msg. I can’t tell you the brand because it’s all in Japanese except the ingredients! It’s a brown bag and I’m pleased with it. Thank you for helping me try all these new foods!!!
    I’ve made miso with seaweed for most of my life and lots of tofu. I was a vegetarian for 33 years and vegan for 25 years. Last year I turned 43 and my health issues became much worse. I started to eat fish and made soups with meat bones. I still feel mostly vegetarian since that has always been my favorite food. Your recipes are sooo healthy and helpful for me. Since finding your channel, I’ve been eating soup twice a day with my two meals (usually at least once is miso). That makes me feel great! I wish I could send you my favorite miso paste and hear what you think of it!! I know I had umeboshi in sushi before but only a few times. I bought a high quality tray of umeboshi and I’ve added it into my rice to eat with salmon and wow!!! 🤩🤩🤩 I LOVE it!! I also tried some yuzu kosho mixed with mayo on my salmon and it might have been the best fish I’ve ever eaten!!
    I’m determined to try all of your recipes!! I’m so grateful to you!!💚 Oh and I bet your boys will start eating mushrooms soon. I love how you don’t pressure them! I didn’t like the texture of mushrooms and never ate them until a friend took me mushroom hunting when I was 32 years old. Since then I eat sooo many mushrooms, especially shiitake!! Maittake and oyster are other favorites. Kabocha squash has also always been my favorite and I can grow it where I live!
    Many thanks Miwa-San. If you ever come to Portland, Oregon, you and your family have a place to stay!

    How often to you do to store for ingredients? I seem to stock my fridge but then don't get through everything before it goes bad??? Do you tend to eat same thing till gone? Or a variety?

    • @MiwasJapaneseCooking
      @MiwasJapaneseCooking  2 роки тому +1

      I store the fresh produces probably about twice a week. I tend to cook same ingredients by seasoning differently, so that I don't get bored.^^

    Gobo is probably my favourite vegetable but I can only get it in Asian or Japanese supermarkets which are not close by. But you can freeze it reasonable well. Another great option for kinpira is potato. Shiso is hard to get so I have to grow it myself or sometimes I use the red shiso that is in the ume boshi package ^^ I think the edamame mix also goes well for an onigirasu. But my husband doesn't eat nori so I always have a problem making onigirasu. Sometimes I can get a nori substitute made from soy. These fillings will also be great as vegetarian/vegan chirashi sushi.
    Place a plastic wrap in the container so it doesn't stick.

      If you live in the US, you can just get pretty much any shipped at great prices, if you look around. I use WEEEE or LOTUS FOOD ONLINE to get burdock root /gobo, Asian herbs, fruits and veg, fresh noodles and everything else I need. The second is family owned, you just have to toggle the page to English with the icon at the top of the page.

    • @MinttMeringue
      @MinttMeringue 2 роки тому +1

      I don't think people tend to put nori sheets into soup because of the texture when it's cooked, but I have seen people sprinkle shredded nori on top or have a small piece on top.

    • @MiwasJapaneseCooking
      @MiwasJapaneseCooking  2 роки тому +2

      I actually like to add nori sheets into my miso soup to boost more umami flavor, but this is only if you like seaweedy smell. Just like Jessica said, it might be a bit overpowering for some people even though I love them! haha

    Maybe if you laid out the bottom of the container with the plastic wrap? Then get everything on the nori, remove the plastic wrap, fold the nori sheet and reuse the plastic wrap? I'm afraid if you lay out the bottom with the nori seaweed, it could tear/break.
    The other day I decided to pay more attention to my zink, iron, vitamin B and C intake and broccoli and sesame are two ingredients that play a big part in that operation, so this recipe might come in handy once I find a cheaper source for nori :'D and anything pickled is also good for one's health, so that's even three birds with one stone. Thank you :D
