  • In this video I test the paint depth on this panel and run it through a series of tests. This can be beneficial to a detailer who would like to know how much clear they have to work with and what the outcome will be when using different products.

    Definitely having a rotary and DA are a must if you are doing even the most casual detailing.

    DA's good for beginners.
    But the Rotary is king.

    • @kodyhogan3568

      I have to disagree. So yes a rotary can help save time on cutting but a DA with a good wool pad can cut but also finish nice enough to only need a quick polish to jewel the paint.
      Also with modern cars the paint is thin enough that if you cut with a rotary, you diminish your chance to polish more than once after that.
      I still use rotary, especially on gel coat. Without sand paper and rotaries on boats, RVs, and planes you'd be there forever polishing. Freshly painted cars are great spot for rotary as well, but to finish the paint, I still feel da is king on finishing.

    Hey dave love you videos! You actually motivated me to paint my own car and it looks great. When i buff and polish the car i still have sanding marks. What would recommend i do to remove the sanding marks if i buff and then a few days later the sanding marks become visible again. Love your content!

    I think for the compound and rubbing the rotary works well and for the liquid polishing and wax DA polisher works well?

    How do you know when it's time to spray new clear coat on bonnet vs correct and polished it? I've seen vids where they respray clear on slight faded bonnets and have seen vids where they correct/polish on really peel looking bonnets.

    Super video, you have cleared up up many wonders of mine.
    As a matter of interest do you know the amount of lacquer on a European car compared to to a Japanese car or Asian car is please. I have heard they are different what are your views on this? thank you and thank you for the great video.

      Thanks. Euro cars normally have over 150um Japanese cars normally have around 100.um. Also euro clear is mostly harder where as Japanese clear is quite soft and easily scratched

    Great, well thought-out video! I'm a beginner and learned how to clean a paint gun from your instructional video. Today's video is timely for me as I've been wondering how many coats of clear to use on my project (car restoration). I'm planning to use a HS clear and the TDS says to apply 2 coats. I've seen a few videos where they say not to apply more than 2 coats of high solids clear because "that will just get you into trouble." Your data suggest that 1 coat of clear is approximately 25 microns and that cutting and buffing will remove at least 13 microns. I'm guessing that I should apply 3 coats of HS clear so that I'll have at 50-60 microns on my final job left after cutting and buffing. Is that what you recommend?

    • @customspraymods
      @customspraymods  3 роки тому

      Hey mate. 2 coats is definitely enough a third coat won’t hurt though.

    I have rotary and da and in my tests i get better and faster results with long throw machines than a rotary. Rotary only for spot working and pad drying for me. And yes i do wetsanding for cars too. The reason why your rotary spot had "more" clear coat because the paint was over heated and the paint swell.

      Rotary can not cut faster than orbital. Impossible.

    Can you do a video showing how hard it is to burn through paint with the rotary?

    • @johnwoolfrey5093
      @johnwoolfrey5093 3 роки тому +2

      I’ve burned through new paint. On a flat hood/bonnet it is safe. Wool pad is most aggressive and if you bump into a curve with the pad perimeter or if you hit the panel edge with the pad spinning in the wrong direction it will burn. When you burn through the machine digs in and it only takes one second.

    • @STILLNIGHTPEARL
      @STILLNIGHTPEARL 2 роки тому +1

      It’s not hard to burn through paint at all with a rotary, even easier with foam than wool, and you don’t need compound to do it, the friction from the foam pad is all it takes.

    You could find the standard error of the data using excel and graph the results. The variation In your data could explain why you saw some strange data. You can see from a scientific pov whether the results were statistically significant or not.

    The rag company and DIY detail channels disagree claiming that random orbital polisher cuts faster than orbital and that orbital can do more damage again than orbital. Silly boys.

    Ah I don't think you are measuring what you think you are measuring, a rotary device has a different wear rate depending on the distance from the centre as it goes trough a larger linear travel per rotation (that 2*pi*r thing), in short so you would expect your wheel to cut deeper per revolution at the periphery than in the middle.
    You need to measure at more than one point to get the average cut depth per second/minute/whatever.
