Thank you so much. That was very instructive, watching how you "shorten" longer growth and create a beautiful apex. If you love your newly created front, I flavor the back as mine. So now you have 2. :)
When is the best time to do major ( hard ) pruning and hard wiring on a Shimpaku? I have 2 little Shimpaku, that were, what I call, "snowballed" by the previous owner. ( The branches are bare with snowball like puffs of foliage at the ends ) I am having a hell of a time for the last ten years trying to get them re-designed somehow.
You can’t hard prune shimpaku as it will shoot out juvenile foliage. With what you describe and depending on the thickness of the branches, you need to heavy wire and twist and contort those branches to bring the foliage in closer to the trunk. If you can’t do that then keep feeding and trimming the long shoots back and hope it back buds. Grafting is another option but slow and not guaranteed.
@@Bonsaiworx Thabnks for the reply. The branches arent very thick. The tree is about ten years old, but hasnt "thickened" up much over the years, basically because, I believe, that as I've been learning through the years, I wasnt feeding very well, so they were surviving, but not really thriving. This year is different. Since they went on a regular feeding as they were supposed to, they have back bud some, but not sure if this is exactly whats needed...
